An FFmpeg process sending data does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid feed—or that a scheduled event has been started. First check whether the intended stream has an incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. If it does, start the scheduled event with Go live. If it does not, check the stream URL and key, YouTube’s error messages, the output format and protocol, then your outbound connection.
What “FFmpeg is sending” does—and does not—tell you
There are several separate steps between FFmpeg running and a YouTube event appearing live: FFmpeg must send to the correct destination with a valid stream key; YouTube must accept and decode the incoming feed; the preview must appear in Live Control Room; and, for a scheduled encoder stream, you must start the event there. An active FFmpeg process or outgoing packets alone do not confirm that all of those steps succeeded.
YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then click Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe that sequence.
Diagnose it in this order
1. Check the event and preview
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Check whether YouTube shows an incoming stream preview. If it does, use Go live to start the scheduled event, then check its status again.
- If there is no preview, treat the problem as an ingest issue. Repeatedly clicking Go live cannot make a missing feed appear; continue with the destination, key, format, protocol, and connection checks below.
There is no single preview-delay threshold established for every encoder and network, so do not diagnose solely by applying a universal number of seconds.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Verify the stream URL and key
Compare FFmpeg’s output destination with the Stream URL shown for that exact stream in Live Control Room. Confirm that the stream key belongs to the same intended stream and has not been reset since it was copied. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s stream credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. If you reset the key, update FFmpeg’s configuration with the new one. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Keep the key private. Do not paste it into public logs, support posts, screenshots, or example commands. Redact it before sharing diagnostic output.

3. Read YouTube’s current error and health indicators
Check the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room for detected errors beside the stream-health indicator. YouTube error messages include timestamps; make sure a warning refers to the current FFmpeg run rather than an earlier attempt. YouTube classifies some errors as critical and others as moderate, so use the actual message to guide the next check rather than assuming every offline status has the same cause. See Live streaming error messages and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
For an Incorrect stream format error, YouTube’s guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP. Inspect the streams FFmpeg is actually outputting; a source file’s extension does not establish its video or audio codec. Refer to YouTube’s error guidance and streaming tips.

4. Match the configured protocol and endpoint
Use the endpoint and protocol provided for the selected stream. YouTube notes that Live Control Room may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default even when you want an RTMPS URL. An RTMPS destination must use the rtmps protocol, and the encoder must support RTMPS. If an SSL error occurs and the endpoint is otherwise correct, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions trying port 443. Neither switching to RTMPS nor changing the port is a universal fix for an offline indicator. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
5. Check file pacing and FFmpeg output
When FFmpeg reads a file, -re reads the input at its native frame rate; FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1. Its generic RTMP example is:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
This is an example of file pacing, not a guaranteed YouTube command. Use the URL and key structure shown for your intended YouTube stream and settings compatible with the selected ingestion protocol. -re does not verify the destination or key, make YouTube accept the feed, or start a scheduled event. FFmpeg also warns against applying a low read rate to a real capture device or live input because it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocols documentation.
6. Test outbound capacity and connection stability
If the destination, key, format, and protocol appear correct, check the network path from the machine running FFmpeg to YouTube. Available upload bandwidth—not download speed—must support the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bitrate headroom; its bandwidth calculation includes the primary stream, any backup stream, and that headroom. A connectivity disruption can interrupt a stream. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Measure outbound capacity on the connection FFmpeg uses, and compare it with the total bitrate being sent.
- If possible, check whether the connection is stable during the stream, not just whether a speed test reports a high peak.
- If the feed appears healthy in FFmpeg but YouTube’s health indicator reports interruptions, investigate the outbound network path rather than relying on inbound/download speed alone.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| Preview is present, but the scheduled event is not live | Click Go live in the intended event in Live Control Room. |
| No preview appears | Compare the destination and key with the intended stream, then read the current YouTube health errors. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | Inspect FFmpeg’s actual output codecs; YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP. |
| An RTMPS or SSL error appears | Verify the RTMPS endpoint, protocol, and encoder support; consider port 443 only in the SSL troubleshooting context. |
| Feed quality or health is intermittent | Check total outbound bitrate, the recommended 20% headroom, and connection stability. |
| FFmpeg runs, but there is no useful YouTube error signal | Do not treat the process as proof of successful ingest. Recheck the exact event, destination, key, protocol, and output. |
