The setting is separate from adoption actions your active Sim can initiate, and the available EA guidance does not establish a global switch for those actions.
Turn off child adoption in Neighborhood Stories
- Open Manage Worlds.
- Choose Manage Households.
- Select the relevant group, such as Other Households or My Households, or select a specific household to configure it individually.
- Open the group’s or household’s Neighborhood Stories settings.
- Switch off the child-adoption event. If the unwanted event is pets being adopted, switch off pet adoption separately.
EA’s Neighborhood Stories guidance says settings can be applied to household groups or individual households, and that different story events can be configured independently (Neighborhood Stories announcement; March 15, 2022 update).

Keep other Neighborhood Stories events on
Turn off only child adoption if you want the affected households to continue experiencing other Neighborhood Stories events. EA also describes an option in Game Options to disable Neighborhood Stories more broadly for a group; that stops more than adoption, so it is not the right choice when you want to preserve the other events.
Know which kind of adoption you want to stop
The Neighborhood Stories control applies to autonomous events among configured neighborhood households. It is not documented as a switch for every adoption route in the game.

Why your Sim may still be able to adopt
EA documents direct adoption as a separate set of player-initiated actions: a Sim can use a phone and choose Home > Hire a Service > Call the Adoption Agency, use a computer and choose Household > Adopt Sim, or use a Friendly interaction to adopt a partner’s infant, toddler, or child when in a relationship with that child’s parent. The Neighborhood Stories setting is for autonomous neighborhood events; EA’s guidance does not say it removes these direct actions (EA’s adoption guide).

The official guidance reviewed does not establish a current in-game global setting to prevent adoption after a child is taken by social services. It also does not verify a current mod that disables every form of adoption. If considering a mod, check its documentation for your game version and consult EA’s Mods and Game Updates guidance; EA’s September 2026 update points players using mods to that guidance.
