On PC, try entering cl_bob 0, cl_bobcycle 0, and cl_bobup 0 in Left 4 Dead’s developer console, one at a time. These community-documented commands control different movement-bob effects; their behavior is not an official compatibility guarantee. The instructions here are for the original Left 4 Dead, not Left 4 Dead 2 or Xbox 360.
How to enter the bob commands on PC
- In Left 4 Dead, open Options → Keyboard/Mouse and enable Allow Developer Console.
- Open the developer console using its configured key. The physical key can vary with your keyboard layout.
- Enter each command separately, pressing Enter after each:
cl_bob 0,cl_bobcycle 0, andcl_bobup 0. - Close the console and check whether the movement bob has changed. The commands are listed as movement-bob controls in a Steam Community command guide posted January 26, 2013; I could not verify their effect in a live game here.
Steam’s developer-console guidance explains how the console is used in Valve games. The commands above are community documentation, not settings whose current behavior Valve guarantees.
Why not start with cl_viewbob 0?
A Left 4 Dead 1 discussion on SourceRuns reports that cl_viewbob was not recognized when entered normally in the console. A participant said it could be forced using SourceMod’s sm_cvar, which makes that a modded workaround rather than the first option for an unmodified game. The report is from October 25, 2015, and is not a guarantee that the workaround will work with every setup. See the SourceRuns discussion.
Do not infer that the original game supports a command just because it appears in discussion of Left 4 Dead 2. A separate Steam Community discussion from September 11, 2023 concerns the sequel, not stock Left 4 Dead 1: Left 4 Dead 2 view-bob discussion.

What about Xbox 360?
The available console guidance and command instructions do not establish an equivalent method for the Xbox 360 version. These steps apply to the PC developer console; they should not be treated as instructions for the console release.
