What these controls do in a live-service game
Live-service games are designed around ongoing content: virtual currency, cosmetic bundles, season or battle passes, character upgrades, randomized items, expansions and time-limited offers. Turning off in-app purchases prevents the device or managed account from authorizing new transactions through the platform’s store. It does not uninstall the game, remove previously purchased items, erase a game account or prevent normal play.

Before changing anything, identify whose account is paying and which checkout appears when you select an item. An adult-owned device, a child-managed account and a family group use different controls.
Turn off purchases on an iPhone or iPad
Block Apple in-app purchases completely
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time. If Screen Time is off, enable it and complete the initial setup.
- Open Apps & Websites, then tap App Store.
- Tap In-app Purchases.
- Select Blocked.
- Set or retain a Screen Time passcode that the person whose purchases you are restricting does not know.
Apple’s support guidance notes that Screen Time must be turned on before Apple in-app purchases can be prevented. The passcode is essential: if the player can change Screen Time, they can undo the restriction without your knowledge.
Choose Ask to Buy instead of a total block
A blanket block is useful when no purchases are permitted. If a child may occasionally receive an item, configure Ask to Buy in the family settings for that child. Eligible requests are sent to the parent or organizer for review. The parent can approve or decline each request, so the child does not need access to the payment method or the Screen Time passcode.
Ask to Buy is a supervision workflow, not the same switch as Blocked. Use one deliberately: blocking removes the purchase path on the device, while approval keeps a controlled request path open. Family features depend on the Apple account arrangement, the child’s age and region, so the labels or availability can differ.

Confirm the iPhone restriction without creating a charge
- Open the game and navigate to its store.
- Select an item only far enough to display the platform checkout or confirmation sheet.
- Do not authenticate or confirm payment. Close the sheet.
- For a blocked setup, verify that the purchase cannot proceed without the Screen Time passcode. For Ask to Buy, verify that a request is routed to the designated adult.
If the game immediately opens a web page, an external browser or a named payment provider instead of the Apple purchase sheet, the Screen Time in-app-purchase switch may not govern that transaction. Use the game account’s own controls as well.
Turn off or verify purchases on Android
Require verification for Google Play purchases
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Purchase verification.
- Open Verification requirement or Verification frequency, whichever appears on the device and account.
- Select the strongest requirement available. If the account offers a choice that verifies every purchase, use that option when you need the closest equivalent to a complete block.
Google describes purchase verification as a way to help prevent accidental or unauthorized purchases. The exact options can differ by device, account type and region. Read the wording on the screen rather than assuming that one phone’s choices will appear on another.
Verification is not a separate game setting. It protects purchases that use the signed-in Google Play account. Anyone who knows the account credentials or can complete the selected verification method may still be able to authorize a transaction, so secure the device and the payment account as well.

Set approval for a child in a Google family group
- Open Google Play and tap the profile picture.
- Open Settings, then Family.
- Tap Manage family members.
- Select the child’s account.
- Open Purchase approvals.
- Choose Only in-app purchases.
Google’s Family Link app exposes the corresponding parent control under Controls > Google Play > Purchases and download approvals. Use the family-manager account when changing the child’s approval rule. The child can then request an in-game purchase while the parent decides whether to approve it.

This setting is useful when you want a request-and-review process rather than an unconditional ban. It also avoids giving the child the credentials needed to defeat a device-level verification prompt.
Check Android behavior safely
- Open the game’s store while signed in to the intended child or player account.
- Start an item purchase, but stop before the final confirmation or authentication step.
- Confirm that Google Play requests the configured verification or sends an approval request to the parent.
- Cancel the checkout and check that no order or charge was created.
If no Google Play sheet appears, record what the game displays instead. A browser page, a publisher wallet, a card form or another provider indicates a different billing route and needs a separate control.
Blocking versus approval: which should a family use?

The billing-path limitation you must check
Google states that purchase approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. Google also documents alternative billing systems in some countries. Apple’s cited instructions likewise address Apple in-app purchases on iPhone and iPad. A game can therefore have more than one payment route.
Look at the checkout screen, not just the game’s store button:

- Platform checkout: the sheet identifies Apple or Google Play and uses the platform’s familiar authentication or approval flow. The corresponding platform control should apply.
- External checkout: the game opens a browser, names another billing provider, requests a separate game-wallet login or displays a card form outside the platform sheet. The platform block or approval may not apply.
- Mixed model: one device, country or item may use platform billing while another uses an alternative route. Test the exact item and account you intend to restrict.
When checkout is external, inspect the game account’s parental controls, wallet limits, spending lock or payment-removal options. If the game offers no such setting, remove saved payment details where appropriate and restrict access to the account that can authorize the external transaction. The platform switch remains useful for platform-billed purchases, but it is not a universal spending lock.

One adult owns the phone and plays the game
Use blocking when you want a hard pause, especially during a period when you are avoiding discretionary spending. On Android, select the strongest verification rule and protect the Google account credentials. On iPhone or iPad, use the Screen Time passcode rather than relying only on a payment prompt.
A child uses an adult’s iPhone or iPad
Do not hand over the Screen Time passcode. If the child should never buy items, keep In-app Purchases set to Blocked. If selected purchases are acceptable, use the family’s Ask to Buy workflow and ensure requests go to the intended parent.

Use the child’s entry under Manage family members and choose Only in-app purchases for Purchase approvals. Check Family Link’s Google Play controls as well, because the parent-facing label may appear there rather than in the standard Play settings.

Several devices use the same family account
Apply the rule on every relevant device and account. A restriction configured on one iPhone does not automatically describe what happens on an Android tablet, and an approval rule for one child account does not necessarily govern an adult account signed in elsewhere. Test each combination that can open the game’s store.
Troubleshooting when a purchase still appears possible
The iPhone setting is missing
- Confirm that Screen Time is enabled; Apple requires it before in-app purchases can be prevented.
- Look under Apps & Websites and the App Store section for the nearest current wording. Apple can adjust labels across iOS versions and regions.
- Verify that you changed the setting on the device and Apple account actually used for the game.
- Check whether the game opened an external checkout instead of Apple’s purchase sheet.
The Android verification option looks different
- Return to Google Play > profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Purchase verification.
- Check both Verification requirement and Verification frequency; only one may be shown.
- Choose the strongest option offered for that account, then test the same game and account again.
- Confirm that the player is not switching to another Google account during checkout.
A child’s approval request never arrives
- Confirm that the child is the family member whose Purchase approvals rule you edited.
- Check that the parent is signed in to the family-manager or designated parent account.
- Verify that the item uses Google Play billing; an external checkout will not use Google Play purchase approvals.
- In Family Link, review Controls > Google Play > Purchases and download approvals for the child.
The game still accepts payment after the platform setting was changed
Stop at the checkout screen and identify the billing provider. If it is not Apple or Google Play, the platform rule is outside that transaction’s scope. Apply a restriction in the game account or its payment system, and remove any saved payment method that the external system can use.
A practical household checklist
- List every device on which the live-service game can be opened.
- Identify the account signed in to each store and the account used inside the game.
- Decide whether the household needs a total block or parent approval.
- Apply the iPhone Screen Time block, Android purchase verification, Apple Ask to Buy or Google Purchase approvals as appropriate.
- Keep passcodes, store credentials and parent approval access private.
- Open the game store and inspect a checkout without confirming payment.
- Repeat the check for any browser, wallet or alternative billing route the game presents.
- Review the setup after an operating-system, account or family-group change, because menu names and available controls can vary by version and region.
What to remember
For Apple devices, the direct switch is Settings > Screen Time > Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases > Blocked. For Android, the current native defense is Google Play purchase verification; use the strongest requirement available. Parents who want review rather than prohibition can use Ask to Buy on Apple or Purchase approvals and Family Link on Google. Always inspect the checkout provider: platform controls protect their own billing path, while a game’s separate payment system needs its own restriction.
