Turn on YouTube Restricted Mode. On a computer, sign in to YouTube, open your profile menu, choose Restricted Mode, and activate it. YouTube says that when Restricted Mode is on, you cannot view comments on videos you watch, so the comment section stays out of sight while a game trailer plays.
Restricted Mode is the only built-in viewer setting that reliably removes comments across YouTube. It is not a viewer-controlled blocked-word list: you cannot tell YouTube to hide only insults on another channel while preserving every other comment. For that level of filtering, the channel owner or a moderator must use YouTube’s creator moderation tools.

Turn off YouTube comments with Restricted Mode
Restricted Mode is designed to limit potentially mature material. One effect is that comments are not visible on videos you watch. That makes it the practical way to watch a game reveal, launch trailer, or showcase without reading arguments, spoilers, harassment, or other hostile replies.
Recommended Free Tools
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube in the browser where you watch trailers.
- Select your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Restricted Mode from the menu.
- Turn on Activate Restricted Mode.
Reload the trailer if the comments area was already open. With the setting active, YouTube removes comment visibility rather than presenting a cleaned-up version of the discussion.

On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube app and select your profile photo.
- Tap Settings.
- Open General.
- Switch on Restricted Mode.
The setting applies to the YouTube app on that Android device. If you watch in a separate browser, check that browser as well; a setting enabled in the app does not automatically configure every other viewing environment.
On Android TV
- Open YouTube on the TV.
- Open Settings.
- Select Restricted Mode or Safety Mode, depending on the version of the YouTube app shown on the television.
- Turn the mode on and return to the trailer.
Menus can differ slightly between Android TV versions, but the relevant control is the Restricted Mode/Safety Mode switch inside YouTube’s own settings.
Enable it everywhere you watch
Restricted Mode works at the browser or device level. Treat each combination as a separate place to configure: a desktop browser, a second browser, a phone, a tablet, a streaming box, and a smart-TV app can each have its own state. If comments appear on a different device, first check that device’s Restricted Mode setting rather than assuming the trailer has changed.

It is a broad content filter
YouTube evaluates signals such as a video’s metadata, title, language, Community Guidelines reviews, and age restrictions when deciding what Restricted Mode should limit. The feature is optional and intentionally narrows the normal YouTube experience. It is not the same as an age restriction: the two controls serve different purposes and can affect what you can see in different ways.
Because the filter is broad, enabling it can change more than the comment area. Some videos may no longer appear or may be unavailable while the mode is active, including material that the system classifies as potentially mature. A game trailer can therefore be affected even when your only goal is to avoid the replies beneath it.

It does not let you choose particular toxic words
There is no personal viewer setting that means “hide insults but keep ordinary discussion” on another channel’s video. Restricted Mode makes a broad decision and hides comments altogether. It does not expose the channel’s blocked-word list, allow you to add phrases, or let you preserve selected comments.
If you need to avoid a short list of terms while continuing to read everything else, YouTube’s native viewer controls do not provide that precision for someone else’s game-trailer upload. Do not confuse a creator’s blocked-word feature with a viewer preference; they operate under different permissions and scopes.
Why comments may be missing under a game trailer
Restricted Mode is enabled
The most direct explanation is that Restricted Mode is on in the browser, app, TV, or network you are using. YouTube’s official wording is: When Restricted Mode is turned on, you can’t view comments on the videos you watch.
Check the profile menu or device settings and switch the mode off if you want the discussion back.
The channel owner turned comments off
Creators can disable comments on their own videos. If comments are off for a trailer, a viewer cannot restore them with a personal setting. The absence is then a channel-level decision, not a problem with your account or the trailer player.
An administrator or network policy is enforcing the mode
Schools, libraries, family-management systems, mobile providers, DNS policies, and other network administrators can enforce content restrictions. When a policy is applied outside your local YouTube menu, the switch may be locked or may turn back on after you change it. YouTube directs users to its content-restrictions troubleshooting guidance to identify administrator or network-level controls.

On a managed network, changing a setting on the television or phone may not be enough. Test the same account on a network and device that you control. If comments return there, the restriction is being imposed by the original network, device management profile, or family setup rather than by the trailer itself.

The controls below can sound similar, but they solve different problems and are available to different people.
| Control | Who can use it | Scope | Result | Precision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restricted Mode | Any viewer, unless an administrator controls it | Your browser or device | Comments are not visible on videos you watch; some potentially mature videos may also be limited | Broad filter; no personal word list |
| Basic or Strict moderation | Channel owners and authorized moderators | The channel’s comment system | Potentially inappropriate comments can be held for review according to the selected level | Channel-level moderation rather than a viewer preference |
| Hold all | Channel owners and authorized moderators | The channel’s comments | Comments wait for manual review instead of appearing immediately | Maximum review control, but it requires moderation work |
| Blocked words | Channel owners and authorized moderators | The channel, not one viewer’s copy of one video | Comments containing listed words or phrases can be held | More targeted than Restricted Mode, but unavailable to ordinary viewers on another channel |
| Blocked links | Channel owners and authorized moderators | The channel’s comments | Comments containing links can be held | Targets URLs rather than general hostility |
| Hidden users | Channel owners and authorized moderators | The channel | Comments from selected accounts are hidden from that channel’s viewers | Account-specific creator control |
| Comments Off | Channel owners and authorized moderators | An owned video or channel settings | The comment area is disabled | Complete removal, with no viewer override |
Restricted Mode changes your viewing experience across a browser or device. Creator controls change what is published or held on a channel. Neither side can be used to create a viewer-specific blocked-word list for another creator’s trailer.
Can you block toxic words on someone else’s game-trailer video?
No. YouTube does not give ordinary viewers access to another channel’s blocked words, hidden-user list, moderation queue, or comment settings. You can either turn on Restricted Mode to remove comments from view or leave it off and use YouTube’s normal comment interface.
This limitation is intentional: blocked words and hidden users are moderation decisions made by the channel owner or a moderator for that channel. A word list created by one viewer would not alter what other viewers see, and YouTube’s native interface does not offer that personal per-video filter.

How creators can reduce toxicity on their own trailer uploads
If you own the game channel or manage its trailers, creator controls are the appropriate solution. They can be configured for a channel and, where available, applied to new uploads or adjusted on existing videos.
Choose a moderation level
YouTube provides Basic and Strict moderation options. These settings use YouTube’s systems to identify potentially inappropriate comments and hold them for review instead of immediately displaying them. Strict moderation is the more aggressive choice; Basic is less restrictive.
Hold every comment
Hold all places every comment in a review queue. It gives a channel team the most direct control over what becomes public, but it also means that no comment appears without someone checking it.
Add blocked words or phrases
A channel owner can maintain a list of words and phrases that should cause comments to be held. This is useful for recurring slurs, spoiler terms, or targeted abuse that automated moderation may miss. The list is channel-level; it is not limited to one trailer and it does not become a preference for viewers.
Hold comments containing links
Creators can hold comments that contain URLs. This helps separate promotional or malicious link posts from ordinary discussion, but it does not by itself identify every insult or hostile message that contains no link.

Hide users
A creator can hide selected users from the channel. Their comments no longer appear publicly on that channel, which is different from blocking a viewer across all of YouTube.
Turn comments off
For a video that should not have a public discussion, the owner can turn comments off entirely. Viewers cannot re-enable them. This is the creator-side equivalent of removing the comment surface rather than filtering individual messages.
Understand review timing and defaults
Comments held because they contain blocked words or links may remain available for review for up to 60 days, according to YouTube’s current help documentation. That retention detail applies to creator moderation queues, not to viewer-side Restricted Mode.

Channel defaults generally govern new uploads, while existing videos can have separate settings. If an older trailer still has comments enabled after a default changes, open that video’s individual comment settings and adjust it directly.
A practical setup for watching trailers without comment toxicity
- Choose your goal. If you want no comment exposure at all, use Restricted Mode. If you are managing the channel, use creator moderation instead.
- Configure every viewing location. Turn on Restricted Mode separately in each browser, mobile app, TV app, or other device where you watch trailers.
- Play a known trailer and check the page. The absence of the comment area confirms that the viewer-side filter is active. Do not expect a personalized list of words or a partially visible comment stream.
- If the switch is unavailable, inspect management controls. Check whether the device, family account, school or library network, mobile provider, DNS service, or another administrator is enforcing the setting.
- If you own the channel, use moderation tools instead. Select Basic, Strict, Hold all, blocked words, blocked links, hidden users, or Comments Off according to the level of review you can maintain.
- Review the effect on video availability. Restricted Mode can limit potentially mature videos as well as comments. Turn it off temporarily only when you accept that broader content filter and want to restore the normal YouTube experience.
What this means for game-trailer viewing
Trailers often attract fast-moving discussion about platforms, release dates, graphics, remakes, monetization, and competing fan communities. If that conversation is distracting or hostile, Restricted Mode removes the entire comment layer while leaving the trailer itself as the focus. It is a simple, account-independent viewing choice, but it deliberately trades comment access and some video availability for a quieter interface.
There is no reliable published percentage showing how often game-trailer comments are toxic. Treat claims about a specific prevalence rate with caution unless they identify a transparent measurement method and date. The available YouTube controls address the problem operationally—hide comments as a viewer or moderate them as a creator—rather than by promising a universal toxicity score.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Comments still visible: confirm Restricted Mode is enabled in the exact browser or device playing the trailer, then reload the page or app.
- Comments missing when you want them: inspect Restricted Mode first, then consider that the creator may have turned comments off.
- The setting is locked or keeps returning: look for a school, library, family-management, provider, DNS, or other administrator policy.
- A video disappeared after enabling the mode: remember that Restricted Mode can limit potentially mature videos, not just comment visibility.
- You want only certain words hidden: that option is available to the channel owner through blocked words, not to a viewer watching another channel’s trailer.
