How to Turn Off the Profanity Filter in Microsoft Word (Windows, Mac, Web and Dictation)

Word normally does not censor profanity that you type with the keyboard. Microsoft Editor can underline offensive or profanity-related wording as a refinement suggestion. On Windows, open File > Options > Proofing and clear the profanity/offensive-language refinement when your build exposes it. Mac users go to Word > Preferences > Spelling & Grammar. In Word for the web, select the text and use Review > Editor > Set Proofing Language > Don’t check spelling or grammar. Asterisks inserted while speaking are a separate Windows voice-typing filter, not Word’s keyboard proofing.

What Word’s “profanity filter” actually does

There are two different behaviors that people often call a profanity filter:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Editor proofing: Word underlines a word or phrase and suggests a change. The original text remains in the document until you accept a suggestion.
  • Voice-typing filtering: Windows voice typing may replace a spoken swear word with asterisks while it transcribes. This runs outside Word’s normal keyboard proofing.

If you typed the word and only see a colored underline, Word has not censored the text. It has raised an Editor refinement or grammar issue. Right-click the mark to see whether Word identifies it as spelling, grammar or a refinement. That classification tells you which remedy to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact refinement names and controls differ by Word version, language and connected services. One installation may show a dedicated profanity rule, while another may group the warning with other refinements or not expose an individual switch at all. This variation is why a menu path that works on one Microsoft 365 installation may look different on another.

First, identify which behavior you are seeing

Before changing settings, perform a short test in a disposable document. Type a word with the keyboard. If the complete word remains visible and only an underline appears, the behavior belongs to Word Editor. Now dictate a short sentence with Win+H. If the spoken word is replaced by symbols or asterisks, Windows voice typing is filtering the transcription before or as it enters Word.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: changing Word’s Proofing options when the asterisks are being inserted by Windows dictation. Conversely, changing voice-typing settings will not remove a blue or red Editor underline from text that you typed manually.

Turn off the profanity or offensive-language rule in Word for Windows

These steps apply to the desktop Word app on Windows. They target the specific Editor refinement first, so spelling and ordinary grammar checks can continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the document in the desktop Word application, not merely in a browser tab.
  2. Choose File > Options.
  3. Open Proofing.
  4. Find the Editor settings area, which may be labelled Grammar and Refinements or Writing Style.
  5. Look for a rule named Profanity, Offensive language or similar wording. Clear that rule, then confirm the dialog.

After returning to the document, type or select a test instance to confirm the mark is gone. Existing underlines may remain until Word refreshes the passage or you reopen the file; if a mark remains, right-click it and verify that it is the same issue type you changed.

Microsoft changes the available refinements by release, language and account-connected services. If you cannot find a profanity-related checkbox, your build may group it under another refinement category or may not expose an individual switch. In that case, use the document or application-wide proofing controls below rather than repeatedly searching for a control your version does not provide.

Remove every automatic spelling and grammar underline

To stop Word from marking any issue while you type, return to File > Options > Proofing and clear both:

  • Check spelling as you type
  • Mark grammar errors as you type

This is broader than disabling profanity detection: misspellings, punctuation problems and other grammar suggestions will also stop appearing automatically. It is useful when you need a clean page for a script, game dialogue or transcript, but it should not be mistaken for a profanity-only setting.

Turning off live marks does not prevent a later review. You can still run a complete review manually with F7. A manual check is useful when you want to finish drafting without visual noise and then inspect spelling and grammar before delivery.

Hide marks in one document only

If you are preparing a particular file that should not display underlines, use the Exceptions for section in the same Proofing dialog. Select the document and enable Hide spelling errors in this document only and/or Hide grammar errors in this document only.

  • [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.

These exception settings affect what is displayed in that file; they do not remove Word’s proofing capability from other documents. They are therefore appropriate when one screenplay, quotation-heavy manuscript or dialogue file contains intentional language, while your ordinary documents should continue to show errors.

Conversely, clearing the automatic-checking boxes changes when Word checks text, not merely whether a particular file shows the marks. Keep that distinction in mind when troubleshooting a setting that appears not to have worked. Hiding an error in a document can leave checking available for a later manual review, while disabling automatic checking suppresses live marking more broadly.

What to do when the Windows option is not visible

Do not assume that a missing Profanity label means Word is malfunctioning. Editor refinements vary with the Word release, proofing language and connected services. Confirm that you are using the desktop app and that you opened the Proofing page under File > Options. If there is no individual rule, choose between the broader live-check controls and document-specific exceptions based on the scope you need.

If only a single occurrence is a problem, an ignore command is less disruptive than disabling every grammar and spelling check. If an entire document should be free of visible marks, the exceptions controls are narrower than changing the application’s automatic-checking behavior.

Turn off proofing marks in Word for Mac

Word for Mac places the controls in Preferences rather than Windows’ Options dialog. Microsoft lists Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac and Word 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 for Mac among the covered versions.

  1. With Word open, choose Word > Preferences from the macOS menu bar.
  2. Select Spelling & Grammar.
  3. Clear Check spelling as you type to remove spelling underlines.
  4. Clear Check grammar as you type to remove grammar and refinement underlines.
  5. Close the Preferences window.

Mac Word may not present a separate checkbox labelled “Profanity.” Clearing the grammar check is therefore the practical way to remove those live marks when an individual refinement switch is unavailable. If spelling marks are also unwanted, clear the spelling checkbox separately; the two controls have different effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can restore either checkbox at any time and run a manual spelling-and-grammar review afterward. If previously ignored items need to be considered again, use Tools > Spelling and Grammar > Reset Ignored Words and Grammar, then review the document with the current settings.

Turn off checking in Word for the web

Word for the web does not provide one master switch that turns spell check on or off for the entire service. Microsoft’s documented approach is to apply a proofing-language setting to the text you want to leave unchecked.

  1. Select the passage that should not receive proofing marks. To target the entire document, click in the document and press Ctrl+A when selecting all text is appropriate.
  2. Open the Review tab.
  3. Choose Editor.
  4. Select Set Proofing Language.
  5. Choose Don’t check spelling or grammar, then select OK.

The setting applies to the selected text. It is not a permanent service-wide switch, and newly added text may need to be selected and assigned the same option. This is the main difference between the web workflow and the desktop application’s Proofing preferences.

To review the document later, select the relevant text and remove the “Don’t check” language setting, or assign a normal proofing language and run Editor again. If only one paragraph contains intentional language, select that paragraph rather than using Ctrl+A; doing so preserves proofing elsewhere in the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignore one flagged word instead of disabling checking

If only one name, quotation or swear word is being marked, changing global settings is unnecessary.

  1. Right-click the underlined word or phrase.
  2. Choose Ignore once to dismiss that occurrence, or Don’t check for this issue when you do not want that particular Editor issue raised again.
  3. If Word is treating a legitimate spelling as a misspelling, choose Add to Dictionary.

Add to Dictionary applies to spelling. It does not create a custom grammar rule or teach Editor to accept a phrase that is being flagged as a refinement. If the same word continues to receive a grammar or offensive-language suggestion, use the relevant Editor setting or the “Don’t check for this issue” command instead.

Use Ignore once when the exception is limited to the current occurrence. Use the issue-specific ignore command when you want to stop that type of suggestion for the relevant text. The available wording can vary with the issue and Word version, so read the context menu rather than assuming that every underline offers identical choices.

Restore ignored words and grammar decisions

On Windows, use File > Options > Proofing > Recheck Document to make Word reconsider items previously ignored. On Mac, choose Tools > Spelling and Grammar > Reset Ignored Words and Grammar. These commands are useful when a document’s proofing history has become confusing and you want a clean review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resetting ignored decisions is different from re-enabling automatic checking. If the live-check boxes remain clear, Word may still wait for a manual review even after ignored items have been reset. Likewise, resetting does not turn a normal proofing language back on for web text that was explicitly set to “Don’t check spelling or grammar.”

When asterisks appear during dictation

If you speak into a microphone and Word inserts asterisks instead of the word you said, do not look only in Word’s Proofing dialog. Windows voice typing is a separate transcription pipeline, launched with Win+H, and its profanity behavior can vary by Windows release.

Older Microsoft community guidance described the voice-typing filter as unavailable for disabling. A 2025 report from the Windows Insider channel described a Filter profanity toggle in Windows 11 voice-typing settings. That means the control may exist on an Insider or newer build but not on every production installation.

  1. Press Win+H to open Windows voice typing.
  2. Open its settings; the exact gear or menu placement depends on the Windows build.
  3. Look for Filter profanity.
  4. If the toggle is present, turn it off and test dictation in a disposable document.
  5. If the toggle is absent, update Windows through your normal organizational or personal update channel and check the voice-typing settings again. Do not assume a Word proofing change can affect transcription.

Testing with a short sentence helps identify the source. Keyboard-entered profanity that remains visible but underlined points to Editor, while spoken profanity replaced by symbols points to voice typing. If keyboard text is changed into asterisks without using dictation, check whether another input tool is active; the Word Proofing controls address Editor marks, not an external transcription service.

Which setting should you use?

Situation Best control Scope
One word is acceptable in context Right-click and choose Ignore once or Don’t check for this issue One occurrence or one issue type
A legitimate spelling is repeatedly underlined Add to Dictionary Spelling vocabulary
Windows desktop Word flags offensive language File > Options > Proofing; clear the profanity/offensive-language refinement when available Editor rule in the application
All live marks should disappear in a Windows document Clear Check spelling as you type and Mark grammar errors as you type Automatic checking in Word
Only one Windows document should show no marks Use Exceptions for and hide spelling and/or grammar errors for that document Selected document
Mac Word shows unwanted marks Word > Preferences > Spelling & Grammar; clear the live-check boxes Mac Word proofing
Word for the web document needs no checking Review > Editor > Set Proofing Language > Don’t check spelling or grammar Selected text, including all text after Ctrl+A
Spoken words become asterisks Windows voice-typing settings, including Filter profanity where available Dictation transcription

The most important comparison is scope. A single Editor rule affects one category of suggestion; clearing both live-check boxes affects every automatic spelling and grammar mark; document exceptions hide marks in one file; and the web proofing-language command applies only to selected text. Voice typing is outside all three Word proofing scopes.

Troubleshooting when the underline remains

The profanity option is missing

Editor refinements are not identical across Word builds, languages and connected services. Recheck that you are in the desktop app’s File > Options > Proofing page, then try the broader automatic-checking controls. If the issue is limited to one file, document exceptions can hide the marks without changing global settings.

The word is still visible but red or blue underlined

An underline is a suggestion, not censorship. Right-click it to identify whether Word classifies it as spelling, grammar or a refinement. Use Add to Dictionary only for spelling; use an ignore command or the appropriate refinement control for grammar and offensive-language flags.

Turning off checks changed more than profanity

That is expected when both automatic-checking boxes are cleared. Restore the boxes and disable only the specific refinement if your build exposes one. Alternatively, keep application-wide checking enabled and hide errors for the single document through Exceptions for.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The document still contains marks after using exceptions

Confirm that the correct file is selected in the Exceptions for section and that you enabled the matching option: spelling and grammar are separate. Exceptions hide the display for that document; they do not necessarily change the underlying proofing language or remove the Editor feature from Word.

Previously ignored words are not being checked again

Use Recheck Document on Windows or Reset Ignored Words and Grammar on Mac. Then run a manual review to confirm the current Editor settings are being applied.

Word for the web checks text I added later

The web command is selection-based. Select the new passage, open Review > Editor > Set Proofing Language, choose Don’t check spelling or grammar, and confirm. If you want the new passage checked, assign a normal proofing language instead.

Dictation is filtered even after Word settings change

Word’s proofing options do not control Windows voice typing. Open the voice-typing settings launched from Win+H and look for its profanity filter. Availability depends on the Windows release, so a missing toggle is a version limitation rather than evidence that Word’s setting failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to turn the filter back on

Reversing the change is straightforward: reselect the profanity or offensive-language refinement in Windows when it is available; re-enable the spelling and grammar checkboxes on Mac; assign a normal proofing language to web text that was set to “Don’t check spelling or grammar”; or switch Windows voice typing’s Filter profanity toggle back on.

If you used an ignore command, run the platform’s reset or recheck command before testing. If you hid marks through document exceptions, clear the relevant hide-spelling or hide-grammar option. Frequently Asked Questions

Does disabling profanity checking delete or censor text already in the document?

No. Keyboard-entered text remains in the document; the setting controls Editor marks and suggestions. Text replaced with asterisks during speech is handled by Windows voice typing instead.

Can I disable only profanity while keeping spelling and grammar checks?

On Windows desktop Word, clear the Profanity or Offensive language refinement when that rule is exposed in Editor settings. If your build has no separate rule, you must use a broader proofing control or ignore individual issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Add to Dictionary stop an offensive-language warning?

No. Add to Dictionary changes spelling vocabulary. It does not add exceptions for grammar or Editor refinement rules.

Why does Word for the web still check newly typed text?

“Don’t check spelling or grammar” is applied to selected text. Select the new text and apply the same proofing-language setting, or restore a normal language when you want Editor to review it.

Is Windows voice typing controlled by Word’s Proofing options?

No. Voice typing uses a separate Windows service. Check the Win+H voice-typing settings and, where your Windows build provides it, the Filter profanity toggle.

What is the difference between hiding errors and turning off automatic checking?

Document exceptions hide spelling or grammar marks in the selected document. Clearing Check spelling as you type and Mark grammar errors as you type changes automatic marking more broadly. You can still run a manual review with F7.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find a Profanity checkbox in Word?

Editor refinements vary by Word version, proofing language and connected services. Your build may use another refinement label or may not expose an individual profanity switch. Use an ignore command, document exceptions or the broader proofing controls instead.

How do I undo an ignored word or grammar decision?

On Windows, choose File > Options > Proofing > Recheck Document. On Mac, choose Tools > Spelling and Grammar > Reset Ignored Words and Grammar.

Can I turn off checking for only one paragraph in Word for the web?

Yes. Select that paragraph, choose Review > Editor > Set Proofing Language, select Don’t check spelling or grammar, and confirm. The setting applies to the selection rather than the whole service.

The Bottom Line

For keyboard-entered text, Word usually flags profanity rather than censoring it. Use the specific Editor refinement on Windows when available, Mac’s Spelling & Grammar preferences, or the web’s selection-based proofing language. If asterisks appear only during speech, change Windows voice-typing settings instead.
