Windows does not have one universal “turn off V-Sync” switch. In most cases, disable Vertical Sync in the game’s video or graphics settings. If the game does not offer the option—or ignores it—use the per-game profile in NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Graphics Command Center.

Turning V-Sync off can remove a synchronization ceiling and sometimes reduce latency, but it can also introduce tearing, uneven frame pacing, higher GPU usage, heat, fan noise, and battery drain. The right setting depends on whether your display is fixed-refresh or supports G-SYNC, FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or another variable-refresh technology.

Quick answer

  1. Open the game’s Settings, Options, or Video/Graphics menu.
  2. Find V-Sync, VSync, Vertical Sync, or Vertical Synchronization.
  3. Set it to Off, apply the change, and restart the game if necessary.

If the game still synchronizes frames, check its Max FPS setting and the graphics-driver profile for that game. “V-Sync off” removes one possible limit; it does not disable every frame cap.

What V-Sync does

V-Sync, short for vertical synchronization, coordinates frame presentation with the display’s refresh cycle. Its main purpose is to reduce screen tearing—the visible appearance of parts of two or more frames at once.

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

With V-Sync disabled, a game may render more frames than the monitor can display. That can make input feel more immediate in some situations and can increase reported FPS, but it also makes tearing more likely. GPU utilization, power consumption, temperature, fan noise, and laptop battery use may increase as well.

The latency effect is not universal. It depends on the game, frame rate, rendering queue, API, driver, display, and synchronization technology. Intel describes V-Sync as synchronizing a game’s frame rate with the display and warns that disabling it can make tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering more likely. NVIDIA similarly notes that tearing can appear when frame rate exceeds the display’s refresh rate. See Intel’s V-Sync explanation and NVIDIA’s V-Sync documentation.

Method 1: Turn off V-Sync inside the game

This is the best starting point because the game controls its own rendering behavior and the setting is less likely to affect unrelated applications.

  1. Launch the game.
  2. Open Settings, Options, or Preferences.
  3. Open Video, Graphics, Display, or a similar section.
  4. Look for V-Sync, Vertical Synchronization, or Wait for Vertical Refresh.
  5. Select Off, save the change, and restart the game if requested.

Also inspect these settings:

  • Frame Rate Limit, Max FPS, or Maximum Frame Rate
  • Refresh Rate
  • Display Mode, including exclusive fullscreen and borderless windowed
  • Triple Buffering or Frame Pacing
  • Low-Latency Mode or NVIDIA Reflex
  • AMD Anti-Lag, Radeon Chill, or frame-generation settings

A game can report V-Sync as off while a separate frame limiter continues to hold it at 60, 120, 144, or another value.

Method 2: Turn off V-Sync for NVIDIA games

Disable it for one game

  1. Right-click an empty area of the Windows desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Select Manage 3D settings.
  3. Open the Program Settings tab.
  4. Select the game. If it is missing, click Add and browse to the game’s executable.
  5. Find Vertical sync and choose Off.
  6. Click Apply and restart the game.

Use the correct executable. A launcher, test build, or separate DirectX/Vulkan executable may have a different profile.

Disable it globally

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings.
  2. Stay on the Global Settings tab.
  3. Set Vertical sync to Off.
  4. Click Apply.

A global override is usually a poor default. It can change behavior in every game and in windowed applications. NVIDIA specifically warns that forcing V-Sync off globally can cause tearing in windowed applications because the Windows Desktop Window Manager composites desktop content at the desktop refresh cadence. Prefer a per-game profile unless you have a specific reason to change the global setting. See NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference and its global V-Sync warning.

G-SYNC qualification

If you use G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, “V-Sync off” is not automatically the best configuration. A common approach is to enable G-SYNC for the desired display and use an FPS cap below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. NVIDIA’s recommendations vary with the game, display, latency technology, and desired trade-off.

Some NVIDIA latency guidance recommends disabling in-game V-Sync in particular Reflex/G-SYNC configurations, while other setups use driver-controlled synchronization. Follow the guidance for your specific display and game rather than assuming that one setting is correct for every G-SYNC system. See NVIDIA’s system-latency guidance and G-SYNC setup documentation.

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from the Start menu.
  2. Open the graphics settings area or use the application’s search function.
  3. Choose Global Graphics for a system-wide setting, or select the game’s profile.
  4. Find Wait for Vertical Refresh.
  5. Choose an off option such as Always Off or Off, Unless Application Specifies.
  6. Save the change and restart the game.

For DirectX and Vulkan games, the in-game setting is often the more reliable control when a driver override has no effect. AMD’s older documentation identifies API-specific behavior, including OpenGL support for Wait for Vertical Refresh. Consult the current game profile and the game’s own graphics settings first. See AMD’s documentation for Adrenalin graphics profiles and API-specific V-Sync behavior.

AMD Enhanced Sync

Enhanced Sync is not simply V-Sync off. It is an alternative synchronization technology intended to reduce tearing and latency compared with traditional V-Sync. AMD says Enhanced Sync supports selected DirectX and Vulkan APIs, does not support OpenGL, and may cause flicker or other undesirable behavior in multimedia playback. Treat it as a separate option and test it per game. See AMD’s Enhanced Sync documentation.

Method 4: Turn off V-Sync for Intel graphics

On supported systems, use Intel Graphics Command Center:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Intel Graphics Command Center from the Start menu.
  2. On Home, select the game under My Games.
  3. Choose Custom to create or edit an application profile.
  4. Find Vertical Sync.
  5. Set it to Always Off and save the profile.
  6. Restart the game.

Intel also provides Always On and Application Controlled. Intel notes that these profile settings affect full-screen games or applications, so results may differ in borderless or windowed modes. See Intel’s Vertical Sync support article.

If Intel Graphics Command Center is missing

  • Search for it in the Start menu.
  • Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Install it through the Microsoft Store if your hardware and Windows version support it.
  • Update the Intel graphics driver.
  • On a laptop, check the manufacturer’s graphics utility and driver package.

Intel’s installation requirements are version-specific and have included Windows 10 version 1709 or later, Windows 11 version 21H2 or later, supported Intel processors, and compatible drivers. See Intel’s installation documentation. If the setting reverts after a restart, sleep, or gameplay, Intel recommends updating the graphics driver and reinstalling Graphics Command Center; its troubleshooting guidance is available here.

Windows settings that are not V-Sync

Several Windows options affect display presentation but do not act as a universal V-Sync switch.

Change the monitor refresh rate

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select Advanced display.
  3. Choose the correct monitor if more than one is connected.
  4. Select a rate under Choose a refresh rate.

A higher refresh rate changes the synchronization ceiling and may make tearing less noticeable, but it does not disable V-Sync. Some choices require a resolution change; Windows marks those options with an asterisk. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic Refresh Rate

Windows 11 may show Dynamic refresh rate under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Microsoft says DRR requires a compatible VRR display and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. It can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games, so disable DRR when a game appears to run at a lower refresh rate than expected.

DRR is separate from V-Sync. Change it only when troubleshooting refresh-rate switching, battery behavior, or an unexpectedly low display mode.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Variable Refresh Rate

Windows may expose Variable refresh rate under graphics defaults or app-specific graphics options, depending on the Windows build, hardware, and driver. This is not a universal V-Sync control. Microsoft explains that VRR presentation requires the display and application to support the relevant variable-refresh and tearing behavior. See Microsoft’s VRR documentation.

Optimizations for windowed games

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games changes the presentation path for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. It can enable features such as VRR and Auto HDR, but it does not directly turn V-Sync off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. You can change the default option or select a game under Custom options for apps, choose Options, change the setting, select Save, and restart the game. The same area can expose per-app GPU preferences, which are important on laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics. See Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization guide.

Why FPS may remain capped after V-Sync is off

If FPS remains exactly 60, 120, or 144, investigate other limits before changing more synchronization settings:

  • The game’s Max FPS or frame-rate limit.
  • NVIDIA Max Frame Rate, WhisperMode, or a laptop power profile.
  • AMD Radeon Chill or another Radeon profile setting.
  • Intel frame-rate controls or application behavior.
  • A launcher, emulator, or game-engine limit.
  • RivaTuner Statistics Server or another external limiter.
  • Borderless-windowed or desktop-compositor behavior.
  • A 60 Hz Windows display mode.
  • Battery-saving mode, thermal throttling, or a CPU/GPU bottleneck.
  • A dock, capture device, HDMI connection, or DisplayPort limitation.
  • Frame generation or a latency feature with its own requirements.

Change one setting at a time and watch both FPS and frame-time graphs. A stable 60 FPS can result from a frame cap, a performance limit, or a game-engine limit—not just V-Sync.

How to verify that V-Sync is actually off

Use more than one check:

  • Confirm that the game’s V-Sync setting remains Off.
  • Use the game’s FPS counter or an official GPU overlay.
  • In a suitable test scene, check whether FPS can exceed the monitor’s refresh rate.
  • Compare frame rate with the selected Windows refresh rate.
  • Inspect frame-time behavior rather than relying on FPS alone.

If your GPU cannot render faster than the display refresh rate, FPS staying below that value does not prove V-Sync is enabled. Conversely, a high FPS number does not guarantee smooth frame pacing.

Choosing the right configuration

Situation Reasonable starting point Trade-off
Fixed-refresh monitor and competitive game V-Sync off, if tearing is acceptable Potentially lower latency, but more tearing and power use
Fixed-refresh monitor where tearing is distracting V-Sync on Cleaner presentation, with possible latency or pacing effects
G-SYNC, FreeSync, or Adaptive-Sync display Enable compatible VRR and consider an FPS cap within its range Usually smoother variable-rate presentation; exact settings depend on display, driver, and game
60 Hz TV or monitor Keep V-Sync on unless latency or tearing is the priority Uncapped rendering may look worse and use more power
Laptop on battery Use a cap or synchronization setting that avoids unnecessary GPU load Lower power use and heat, but potentially lower peak FPS
Benchmarking Disable synchronization and unrelated frame caps Useful for testing, but not necessarily the best gaming configuration

VRR can reduce or eliminate tearing within its supported operating range, but it does not make every synchronization setting interchangeable. A well-chosen FPS cap can provide a better balance than completely uncapped rendering, especially with VRR or on a laptop.

Common problems and fixes

The game still says V-Sync is on

  1. Set the game option to Off.
  2. Check the driver’s per-game profile.
  3. Remove conflicting global overrides.
  4. Check the game’s frame limiter.
  5. Restart the game.
  6. Confirm that the driver profile targets the correct executable.

The game may use an API or window mode unaffected by the driver option, or a launcher may rewrite its graphics configuration at startup.

V-Sync is off but FPS is still exactly 60

Check the Windows refresh rate, in-game limit, driver Max FPS setting, laptop power mode, battery operation, external limiters, display connection, and game-engine restrictions. Also confirm that the game is not simply limited by its CPU or GPU workload.

Turning V-Sync off causes severe tearing

Turn it back on, enable a compatible VRR mode, use an FPS cap, test fullscreen versus borderless mode, or increase the monitor’s refresh rate if supported. NVIDIA Adaptive VSync and AMD Enhanced Sync are alternatives, not identical replacements, and may behave differently from game to game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The V-Sync option is missing

The game may not expose it, may use a launcher or configuration file, or may rely on the graphics driver. OEM laptop drivers can also hide or rename controls. Check whether the game is using the expected GPU and whether its rendering API supports the driver override.

Settings revert after reboot

Update the GPU driver, recreate the per-game profile, and check whether a tuning or driver-cleanup utility resets settings. On laptops, avoid mixing generic and OEM drivers without checking compatibility. For Intel systems, update the driver and reinstall Intel Graphics Command Center if necessary.

A laptop uses the wrong GPU

Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose Options, and verify its GPU preference. Also check NVIDIA or AMD application profiles, the laptop manufacturer’s control software, and whether the system is on battery or AC power.

Frame generation and latency features

Do not apply one synchronization rule to every frame-generation technology. Some features impose specific requirements. For example, AMD’s AFMF documentation specifies V-Sync disabled in both the driver and game for particular supported configurations. That requirement does not automatically apply to every NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or game-specific frame-generation system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the documentation for the exact feature—such as NVIDIA Reflex, AMD AFMF, or the game’s own frame-generation mode—and test the resulting frame pacing. AMD’s AFMF documentation describes its supported configuration requirements.

Restoring safer defaults

If disabling V-Sync makes motion worse, return the game’s V-Sync option to its original value. In the driver panel, remove the per-game override or set it to Application Controlled, Use global setting, or the equivalent option. Then restart the game and verify its refresh rate, frame cap, and display mode.

Bottom line

Turn off V-Sync in the game first. Use a per-game NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel profile only when the game lacks a working control. Do not confuse V-Sync with Windows VRR, Dynamic Refresh Rate, G-SYNC, FreeSync, or an FPS cap. If disabling it produces tearing, excessive heat, or unstable frame pacing, restore V-Sync, enable compatible VRR, or use a carefully chosen frame-rate cap.
