Microsoft does not currently list Apple TV or tvOS as a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming platform. The most practical workaround is to run Xbox Cloud Gaming at xbox.com/play on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then mirror that device to Apple TV with AirPlay. For regular play, a wired HDMI connection or an officially supported TV device is usually the better choice.
Can you play Xbox Cloud Gaming directly on Apple TV?
Not through an officially supported Microsoft endpoint. Microsoft lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, supported browsers, selected smart TVs, and certain Fire TV devices, but not Apple TV or tvOS. Its official TV support page covers selected Amazon Fire TV, LG, Samsung, and VIDAA devices—not Apple TV: xbox.com/en-us/xbox-on-tvs.
That distinction matters. Apple TV is normally the AirPlay receiver in this setup, while the Xbox browser session runs on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This is also different from Xbox Remote Play: Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s servers, whereas Remote Play streams a game from an Xbox console you own. What you need
- An active Game Pass plan with cloud-gaming access, or a supported cloud-playable title available to your account. Availability varies by region, plan, device, and game.
- An iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a supported browser. Microsoft names Safari, Chrome, and Edge for browser-based cloud gaming.
- A compatible controller. Microsoft says cloud gaming requires one except for games that support touch controls. See the current verified-controller information from Microsoft’s TV support page.
- An Apple TV 4K or another AirPlay-compatible television.
- A reliable internet connection. Microsoft lists 10 Mbps minimum download speed and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi; its TV guidance describes 20 Mbps as a best-performance target for PCs, consoles, and tablets. These figures do not guarantee low latency, low jitter, or no packet loss.
Best no-purchase workaround: AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad
This is the simplest option if you already own the Apple TV and an Apple mobile device. It uses Microsoft’s supported browser experience, but the Apple TV displays the mobile device’s screen rather than running Xbox Cloud Gaming itself.

Setup steps
- Update the iPhone or iPad and Apple TV.
- Connect both devices to the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
- Open Safari and visit xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account connected to your eligible Game Pass access.
- Pair the controller with the iPhone or iPad—the device actually running the game.
- Start a cloud-playable game.
- Open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the Apple TV and enter the AirPlay passcode if prompted.
- Keep the source device awake, connected to Wi-Fi, and on the browser session.
Apple’s official mirroring procedure is documented at Apple Support. To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose Stop Mirroring.
Advantages and limitations
AirPlay avoids buying an Xbox console and is convenient for occasional sessions. However, it adds a wireless display step to an already interactive cloud stream. Notifications, calls, battery drain, accidental app switching, network congestion, and browser interruptions can affect play. Some apps also restrict or handle AirPlay differently; Apple notes that not every video app supports AirPlay.
Do not assume that the Xbox session will be handed off as a native AirPlay video stream. For cloud gaming, full-screen mirroring is the relevant method, so the iPhone or iPad remains part of the input, processing, and display chain.
Better for longer sessions: AirPlay from a Mac
A Mac is often more comfortable for extended play because it has a larger browser environment, easier power management, and the option of a wired network connection. Microsoft lists Mac computers among its supported cloud-gaming devices.

- Open Safari, Chrome, or Edge on the Mac and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in and launch the game.
- Pair the controller with the Mac.
- Open macOS Control Center or the screen-mirroring controls.
- Select the Apple TV as the AirPlay display.
- Choose screen mirroring or the available extended-display option, depending on your macOS version.
- Keep the Mac awake and connected to power.
Apple documents Mac-to-Apple-TV AirPlay at its Apple TV User Guide. A VPN, firewall, guest network, or network isolation can prevent discovery. AirPlay may also add latency, send audio to the wrong output, or stop when the Mac sleeps or the browser tab closes.
Best performance workaround: connect the source device by HDMI
If wireless mirroring is unstable, connect the device running Xbox Cloud Gaming directly to the television. Apple TV can remain disconnected from the gaming video path and continue serving its normal streaming role.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser on a compatible Mac, iPad, or other suitable device.
- Pair the controller directly with that source device.
- Connect the source to the television using the appropriate HDMI cable or adapter.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the television.
- Keep the source device awake and, where possible, use wired Ethernet.
HDMI avoids AirPlay discovery and wireless display overhead, so it is often more predictable and potentially lower-latency than mirroring. It is not universally plug-and-play: USB-C-to-HDMI support, maximum display mode, charging passthrough, adapter quality, copy-protection behavior, and accessory compatibility depend on the exact device, adapter, cable, and television. Older iPhones and iPads may require a different adapter standard. Do not assume a particular resolution or refresh rate without checking the hardware combination.
Are third-party Apple TV Xbox apps official?
Third-party tvOS clients may provide a more console-like Apple TV interface, but they are not Microsoft’s official Xbox app or an officially listed Xbox Cloud Gaming endpoint. Projects reported during 2026 include Stratix, CouchLink, CloudGear, and xForceNow. Windows Central has reported on Stratix as a native Apple TV application: Windows Central.

Treat these apps as experimental. Availability, App Store status, sign-in behavior, pricing, privacy practices, and continued operation can change. Before installing one, check:
- Whether it is currently available in your Apple TV App Store region.
- Whether the developer is clearly identifiable.
- Whether it uses Microsoft’s official sign-in flow rather than asking for credentials in an unfamiliar form.
- Whether it supports Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, or both.
- Whether it requires a separate subscription.
- What permissions and privacy terms apply.
- Whether Microsoft endorses it. If not, do not describe it as Microsoft-supported.
Do not make an unofficial client the primary recommendation, and avoid entering Microsoft credentials into an unknown app or bypassing platform security.
The reliable alternative: use a supported TV or streaming device
If you want to play frequently without keeping an iPhone, iPad, or Mac in the chain, use an officially supported endpoint. Microsoft’s current list includes selected:
- Amazon Fire TV devices, including the first-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max, third-generation Fire TV Cube, second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K;
- LG TVs;
- Samsung TVs;
- VIDAA-powered devices.
Check the current model and market list at Microsoft’s Xbox TV page before buying. Not every Fire TV Stick or smart TV is supported.

A Mac or Windows PC connected by HDMI is another dependable option. An Xbox console remains the most complete Xbox-compatible living-room solution, but it is unnecessary if your goal is occasional cloud play and you already have a suitable Apple device.

Apple TV does not appear in AirPlay
- Put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
- Disable or test without a VPN.
- Restart the source device and Apple TV.
- Confirm that AirPlay receiving is enabled on Apple TV.
- Check Home and restriction settings.
- Install available software updates.
- Try HDMI if discovery still fails.

The game stutters or controls feel delayed
A fast speed-test result is not enough. Weak Wi-Fi, a congested 2.4 GHz network, different access points, packet loss, high latency, cloud-server distance, VPN traffic, and AirPlay’s extra display step can all contribute. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical, stop background downloads, disable the VPN for testing, keep devices near the access point, and compare AirPlay with HDMI.
The controller is not detected
Confirm that the controller is paired with the iPhone, iPad, or Mac running the Xbox session—not merely with Apple TV. Check whether another nearby device has reclaimed the connection, update controller firmware, and verify compatibility with the source operating system. Touch controls may work only in games that explicitly support them.

The picture works but audio is wrong
Check the source device’s audio output, Apple TV’s audio destination, and whether Bluetooth headphones remain connected to the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Mirroring and a supported video-stream handoff are not identical, so audio routing can vary.
The browser session closes
Prevent the source device from sleeping, keep the browser tab open, avoid switching networks, and connect a Mac or mobile device to power for long sessions. On iPhone and iPad, incoming calls, notifications, orientation changes, and app switching can interrupt the session.
A game or account is unavailable
Cloud Gaming access varies by country, plan, title, device, publisher licensing, and time. Not every Game Pass game is streamable, and you should not assume that upgrading to a particular plan will make Apple TV compatible. Check Microsoft’s current cloud-gaming and Game Pass pages for your region: xbox.com/cloud-gaming and Xbox Game Pass.
Which option should you choose?

Bottom line
Apple TV is not currently an officially listed Xbox Cloud Gaming device. For an Apple TV you already own, start with browser play on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac and AirPlay screen mirroring. If you play regularly, HDMI is usually the more predictable workaround; if you want to eliminate the workaround entirely, choose a specifically supported Fire TV or smart TV—or an Xbox console.
