If your Nintendo Switch has been unused for months and will not start, its battery may be deeply depleted. Take it out of the dock, reset the AC adapter, force the console off, then charge it directly from a wall outlet for at least 30 minutes before trying again.
Use this reset-and-charge sequence
-
Remove the console from its dock.
-
Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the console. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds to reset the adapter.
-
With the console undocked, hold its POWER button for 20 seconds, then release it. This forces the console to shut down.
-
Plug the adapter into a wall outlet, then connect it directly to the console. If needed, try a different outlet.

Press POWER once. If the screen remains black but a charging indicator appears briefly in the top-left corner, the battery may be nearly depleted. Leave the console charging for at least 30 minutes, then press POWER once more. Nintendo describes this behavior in its no-power troubleshooting guidance and charging instructions.
If it still will not charge or start
Check the adapter and outlet
Use an undamaged Nintendo Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002, or another adapter compatible with the console. Nintendo warns that damaged or non-licensed adapters can have compatibility problems. If available, try a known-good compatible adapter; you can also check whether the adapter works with another compatible Nintendo USB-C device. The original Switch adapter recommendation here applies to the Switch family guidance cited above, not to Nintendo Switch 2.

Inspect the charging connection
Look for visible damage to the adapter and the console’s USB-C charging port. Do not keep using visibly damaged equipment. The dock’s power light does not establish that the console itself is charging; look for the console’s charging indicator instead.
Know when to seek service
If there is no charging indicator, charging does not progress with a known-good compatible adapter, or the port appears damaged, contact Nintendo Support about service. Repeating the same reset is unlikely to resolve a persistent adapter, port, or console fault.

When a long-unused Switch has shorter battery life
A console that starts but does not hold a charge as long as it once did may have a battery that has aged. Nintendo says battery life gradually decreases; after about 800 charge cycles, it may be about 80% of a new system’s battery life. Nintendo describes that decline as normal and not, by itself, evidence of a system or battery issue. The figure is about long-term battery capacity, not the charge time needed to revive a console that has been left unused.
Expected runtime also varies by model and use. Nintendo lists approximate full-charge ranges of 2.5–6.5 hours for original Switch HAC-001 (serial beginning XAW), 4.5–9 hours for revised Switch HAC-001(-01) (serial beginning XKW), 3–7 hours for Switch Lite HDH-001, and 4.5–9 hours for OLED HEG-001. These are model-specific estimates, and software and features in use affect runtime. See Nintendo’s battery-life guidance.
