The exact behavior differs between Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server; Bedrock may also require force-gamemode=true if you want the configured mode to override a player’s saved mode.
Set the server to Creative mode
Use the instructions for your server edition. In either case, edit the server’s server.properties file, save it, and restart the server to load the change.
Java Edition dedicated server
- Open the server directory and locate
server.properties. - Set the
gamemodeproperty tocreative. - Save the file and restart the server.

Bedrock Dedicated Server
- Open the Bedrock server’s
server.propertiesfile. - Set
gamemode=creative. - If you want the server to override a mode saved when the world was created, also set
force-gamemode=true. - Save the file and restart the server.
Microsoft lists survival, creative, and adventure as valid gamemode values. With force-gamemode=false, Bedrock can send a player the mode saved at world creation; setting it to true makes the server send the configured mode instead. See Bedrock Dedicated Server Properties.
Change one player’s mode with a command
To switch an individual immediately, run /gamemode creative <player> in an authorized command context. The player argument can be a player name or target selector. For Bedrock, Microsoft documents that /gamemode requires Game Directors permission and cheats: gamemode Command. The official Bedrock command examples include /gamemode creative: Popular Commands.

If the setting does not take effect
- Confirm that you edited the
server.propertiesfile for the server instance you are running. - Restart the server after saving the change so it reloads the configuration.
- On Bedrock, check whether the player’s mode was saved at world creation. If it should not take precedence, set
force-gamemode=true. - If a command fails on Bedrock, check that cheats are enabled and the command issuer has Game Directors permission.
Available settings and behavior can vary by edition and server version, so consult the documentation for the version you run.
