To play with someone on another platform, update every copy of the game, link the publisher account the game requires, allow multiplayer and communication in each player’s platform privacy settings, turn on the game’s cross-play option, and send the invitation from its social or party menu. The labels and supported combinations differ by game edition, platform, region and release.
What cross-play actually requires
Cross-play lets players on different hardware join the same supported game session. It is separate from cross-progression: a game may let you carry progress between devices without allowing every device to play together. A console, PC or mobile version also has to be the same edition and on a compatible build; owning the same title name is not enough.

Use this order whenever you set up a new game:
- Update everyone. Install the current patch on every console and PC. A player on an older build may be unable to see invitations or join a lobby even when cross-play is enabled.
- Sign in to the required publisher account. Fortnite uses an Epic Games account, Call of Duty uses an Activision account, and Bedrock Minecraft uses a Microsoft account. Link that account to the console or PC profile before searching for friends.
- Permit multiplayer and communication. Console privacy, child-account, family-safety and communication controls can block cross-platform invitations even when the game switch is on. Allow multiplayer, friend requests and voice or text communication as needed.
- Enable the game setting. Look under Account, Network, Gameplay, Privacy, Social or Online settings. Some games have separate switches for cross-play and cross-play communication.
- Add the other player by the correct ID. Use the publisher account name or the game’s displayed friend code when the title provides one. A console gamertag or system username may not be the identifier the game searches.
- Invite from the game’s social menu. The host should open the party, friends or social panel and send the invitation there rather than relying only on a platform-level invite.
- Restart after account or privacy changes. Many games read those permissions at sign-in, so close and reopen the game after changing them.
Finally, check whether the console requires an online-multiplayer subscription for that title. The requirement is set by the platform and mode, not by the word cross-play itself.
Check the edition and platform combination first
Most failed cross-play attempts are an edition mismatch or an unsupported combination rather than a missing checkbox. Confirm all of the following before changing settings:

- Everyone is launching the same game release, not a similarly named previous year’s edition.
- Everyone is using the same edition where the publisher offers separate editions.
- The current release supports the specific pair of platforms. Support can change by mode, region, generation or update.
- Each player is signed in to the account type the game uses for friends and online services.
- Both players are online in the game, not merely signed in to the console network.
If the title has separate network pools or editions, no privacy change can bridge them. Minecraft is the clearest example: Java and Bedrock are different editions with different server systems.
Fortnite: enable cross-platform play
PlayStation setting
On PlayStation, start in the Fortnite lobby and follow this path:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open the lobby menu and choose Settings.
- Open Account and Privacy.
- Scroll to Gameplay Privacy.
- Set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes.
Epic’s privacy controls also cover social and communication permissions in the settings menus. If invitations still do not arrive, check the PlayStation account’s privacy and parental-control screens as well as Fortnite’s settings. A restricted child account can block friend requests, party participation or voice chat independently of the in-game switch.
Invite a player on another platform
After both players have enabled the setting and signed in to their Epic Games accounts, open Fortnite’s social or friends panel, search for the other person’s Epic display name, accept the request, and invite that friend to the party. The display name is the useful identifier when the console name and Epic name differ.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Use the same sequence on other Fortnite platforms—open the game’s settings, find the account, privacy or gameplay section, and look for the cross-platform-play control—but do not assume the menu wording is identical. Platform privacy controls can override Fortnite, and a game restart may be needed after an account or permission change.
Call of Duty: turn on cross-play and communication
Black Ops 6 menu path
Activision’s Black Ops 6 guidance places the relevant console controls under Options > Settings > Account & Network. Open that page and review the cross-play and cross-play-communication choices for the account. If communication is disabled separately, players may be able to join the same match but not hear or message one another.
Black Ops 6 is a specific example, not a universal path for every Call of Duty release. Annual releases and modes can rename or move the controls, so use the current title’s Account, Network, Online or Privacy page when the labels differ.
Console controls can override the game
On Xbox, the console’s privacy and online-safety settings can override an in-game choice. Allow multiplayer, cross-network play and communication for the relevant account, and review family settings if the player is a child. A setting that blocks communication can also prevent party invitations from working as expected.

Steam and Battle.net do not provide a switch that disables Call of Duty cross-play. If you are looking for a PC-level off switch on either launcher, the control has to be handled by the game or the console account instead.
Add the friend through the publisher account
Sign in to the required Activision account and use Call of Duty’s social menu to add the other player by the Activision ID shown in the profile. A platform friend list alone may not populate the in-game list. Once the request is accepted, invite the friend from the game’s party panel and confirm that both players have selected a mode that supports their platform combination.
Minecraft: Java and Bedrock are not the same cross-play pool
Java players cannot natively join Bedrock players
Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server systems. A Java player therefore cannot natively join a Bedrock player’s world, and changing a privacy setting will not make the editions interoperate. Verify the edition shown on each device before troubleshooting accounts or subscriptions.
Join a Bedrock friend’s world
For Bedrock players, the normal route is:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account connected to Minecraft on every device.
- Confirm that multiplayer and friend permissions are allowed for each account.
- Make sure both players are online in Minecraft and have the same current Bedrock update.
- From the main screen, choose Play, then open the Friends tab.
- Select the online friend’s world and join, or have the host send an invitation from the in-game friends list.
On consoles, the platform may also require an active online-multiplayer subscription. Microsoft-account family permissions can block multiplayer, Realms access or communication even when the player can sign in successfully.

What Java players can do
Java players can play with other Java players through compatible multiplayer worlds or servers, subject to that edition’s account and server requirements. They cannot use the Bedrock Friends tab to enter a Bedrock world. If friends are on both editions, the practical choices are for everyone to use the same edition or to use a third-party bridge or server arrangement that explicitly supports both; that is not native Java-to-Bedrock cross-play and has its own compatibility and administration requirements.
How to set up cross-play in another game
Because cross-play is implemented by each publisher, there is no single system-wide switch. Apply this title-by-title process:
- Identify the exact release. Record the game name, edition, platform and, when relevant, console generation. Search the game’s current official support page for its cross-play platform matrix.
- Find the publisher account. Look in the title’s profile, account or login screen for the account that owns the friend list. Link it before sending requests.
- Open the right settings category. Check Account, Network, Online, Gameplay, Privacy and Social in that order. Look for both cross-play and cross-play-communication controls.
- Review platform privacy. Allow multiplayer, cross-network play, friend requests and voice or text communication. For a supervised account, the family organizer may have to make the change.
- Check subscriptions. Confirm the platform’s online service requirement for the game and mode. Free-to-play and paid games can have different rules.
- Use the in-game ID. Add the friend with the publisher ID, display name plus discriminator, or code the title specifies.
- Join the correct mode. Some games restrict cross-play by ranked mode, custom lobby, competitive playlist or region. If the invitation works but matchmaking fails, try a mode documented as cross-platform.
- Restart and test privately. Close the game on both devices, relaunch, create a private party and test an invitation before entering public matchmaking.
Do not infer support from marketing language such as online multiplayer. The official support page for the exact release is the authoritative source for platform combinations, regional limitations and whether cross-play can be disabled.
Cross-play comparison
| Game or edition | Required account | Platform and edition rule | Privacy and parental controls | Voice and text chat | Friend identifier | Online subscription | Can cross-play be disabled? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | Epic Games account linked to the platform profile | Current release supports cross-platform play among the combinations Epic enables; verify the current matrix and any mode or regional limits | Fortnite social, gameplay-privacy and communication controls plus the platform’s privacy or child-account settings | Review communication permissions; a separate communication restriction can block chat or invitations | Epic display name in the in-game friends panel | Depends on platform and mode; check the platform’s current online-play rule | PlayStation has an Allow Cross Platform Play setting; other platforms may use different controls |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 example | Activision account linked to the platform | Use the current release’s supported-platform matrix; modes and yearly releases can differ | In-game Account & Network controls plus console privacy, family and communication settings | Cross-play communication may be separate from matchmaking cross-play | Activision ID shown in the profile | Depends on platform and mode | Controls vary by release; Xbox console settings can override the game, while Steam and Battle.net cannot disable cross-play |
| Minecraft Bedrock | Microsoft account | Bedrock players can join supported Bedrock worlds; Java and Bedrock are separate native multiplayer pools | Microsoft-account multiplayer, family and communication permissions plus console privacy settings | Controlled by account and platform communication permissions | Microsoft/Xbox gamertag or the friend entry shown in Minecraft | Some consoles require an online-multiplayer subscription | Availability of a cross-play switch is not stated; edition and account permissions determine access |
| Minecraft Java | Account used by the Java edition | Native multiplayer is with compatible Java players and servers, not Bedrock players | Account and server permissions still apply | Depends on the Java server and account settings | The identifier used by the Java multiplayer service or server | Platform-specific subscription rules generally do not apply in the same way as console Bedrock play | Not applicable as a Java-to-Bedrock switch; the editions are separate |
Privacy, parental controls and voice chat
Cross-play creates an additional network boundary, so there can be two independent permission layers: the game account and the device account. A game may report that cross-play is enabled while the console still refuses the connection. Check the account that is actually signed in, especially when a household uses several profiles.

- Multiplayer access: permit online and cross-network multiplayer.
- Friend requests: allow requests from other networks or from everyone the game supports.
- Communication: allow voice and text communication if the group needs party chat. Cross-play communication can be a separate switch.
- Family settings: a parent or family organizer may need to approve the change; changing only the child’s game setting is insufficient.
- Blocked users: remove an accidental block or privacy restriction before sending a new invitation.
For reliable party chat, test the game’s own voice channel first. A headset with a microphone can help, but hardware will not bypass a blocked communication permission. If game chat is restricted, use the platform’s approved communication method only when it is permitted for every participant.

Troubleshoot a missing friend, failed invite or empty lobby
The friend does not appear
- Confirm that both players used the same publisher account type and searched the exact in-game ID, not only a console username.
- Check that the friend request was accepted on the receiving account.
- Confirm that both accounts are online inside the game and that neither player is appearing offline.
- Verify the edition, game release and patch number. Java and Bedrock Minecraft, for example, will not share a native friend list.
The invitation is blocked or never arrives
- Review console privacy, child-account and communication permissions for both players.
- Enable cross-play communication where the title offers a separate control.
- On Xbox, check the console setting because it can override Call of Duty’s in-game choice.
- Close and relaunch the game after linking an account or changing a privacy rule.
The party forms but matchmaking fails
- Check whether the selected mode, ranked playlist or custom lobby supports the platform combination.
- Verify regional or network restrictions in the exact release’s official support information.
- Make sure every player is on the current update and that no platform service outage is preventing authentication.
- Test a private, supported mode before concluding that cross-play is unavailable.
Minecraft-specific failure
If a Bedrock friend is missing from the Friends tab, verify Microsoft-account permissions, multiplayer settings, the Bedrock edition on both devices and any required console subscription. If one player is on Java, stop changing privacy settings and move both players to the same edition; that is an edition boundary, not a network error.
When to turn cross-play off
Some games expose a cross-play switch for matchmaking, while others require it for the entire online population. Disabling it can lengthen queue times or prevent you from joining friends on another platform. If you turn it off for privacy or input-device reasons, explain the change to the party and restore it before inviting a cross-platform friend. In Call of Duty, Steam and Battle.net users cannot use those launchers to disable cross-play, and Xbox console policy can take precedence over the game menu.
