There is no universal shortcut for turning on a gaming keyboard’s LED or RGB lighting. First, find the key marked with a sun, lightbulb, rays, or illuminated-key icon. Press that key, or press Fn plus the marked key, then increase brightness. If nothing happens, open the keyboard maker’s official software and set brightness above 0% with a simple static effect.
The exact control depends on the keyboard model, layout, firmware, connection type, and whether it is a standalone keyboard or a gaming laptop.

Before you start: does the keyboard have backlighting?
“LED lights” can mean several different things:
- Backlighting: White or single-color LEDs illuminating the keys.
- RGB lighting: Multicolor LEDs with color, animation, zone, or per-key controls.
- Indicator LEDs: Small lights for Caps Lock, Num Lock, wireless status, or game mode. These do not prove that the keys are backlit.
- Decorative lighting: LEDs around the case, logo, sides, or selected keys rather than under every key.
A gaming label does not guarantee illumination. Check the product name, manual, packaging, photographs, or the manufacturer’s support page. If the keyboard has no physical LEDs, software cannot add them.

For a laptop, use the laptop maker’s documented keyboard-light shortcut and control utility. Laptop lighting may also be limited by battery settings, sleep behavior, BIOS/UEFI options, or the installed firmware.
How to turn on the lights
- Connect and power the keyboard. For a wired keyboard, connect it directly to the computer rather than a passive hub, monitor passthrough, dock, or KVM. If it has two USB connectors, connect both as specified by the manufacturer. For wireless models, turn on the power switch, charge the battery, and test wired mode or the included receiver if available.
- Find the lighting control. Inspect F1–F12, the top-right area, and any dedicated lighting button or dial. Look for a sun, rays, lightbulb, keyboard-backlight, or illuminated-key symbol. Check the secondary legends printed on the keycaps and locate Fn.
- Press the lighting key by itself. Some keyboards use a dedicated backlight button. Press it once, then wait briefly for the lighting state to change.
- Try Fn plus the marked key. Depending on the model, this may toggle lighting, cycle effects, or change brightness. Do not assume that the same combination works across an entire brand.
- Increase brightness repeatedly. A keyboard can be enabled but set to its lowest brightness or 0%. Press the brightness-up shortcut several times, or hold it briefly if the manual specifies that behavior.
- Select a simple effect. If the keyboard supports RGB, choose Static, Solid, or Full first. Animated effects can make a fault harder to diagnose.
- Save the profile. If the keyboard has onboard memory, save the lighting profile so it can work when the manufacturer’s software is closed.
Do not repeatedly guess random combinations: the same keys may control media, macros, profiles, game mode, or other functions.
Common shortcuts by brand and model
These are examples, not universal rules. The manual for the exact model takes priority.

Turn on lighting in the manufacturer’s software
Hardware shortcuts are quick and usually work without background software, but they may offer only preset brightness levels or effects. Official utilities provide more control, including profiles, per-key lighting, synchronization, and onboard-memory settings. They can also introduce conflicts with other RGB programs.
- Install or open the official utility for the exact keyboard model.
- Select the keyboard.
- Open Lighting, Illumination, RGB, or a similarly named section.
- Set brightness above 0%.
- Choose a static or solid effect and a visible color.
- Apply the setting and save it to onboard memory if the device supports that feature.
Logitech
Use the Logitech software supported by your model, such as G HUB where applicable. Logitech’s support pages list model-specific controls and compatibility; older Logitech utilities may no longer be maintained. For the Pro Gaming Keyboard’s physical toggle, see Logitech support.

If the lights are still off

- Ip32 water resistant – Prevents accidental damage from liquid spills
- 10-zone RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects
- Whisper quiet gaming switches – Nearly silent use for 20 million low friction keypresses
- Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort
- Dedicated multimedia controls – Adjust volume and settings on the fly
- Increase brightness. Test the physical brightness control and the software slider.
- Check the active profile. Look for a profile named Lighting Off, Black, 0%, or a blank effect. Create a new profile with static white lighting.
- Check game mode and key remaps. A custom remap, Fn lock, or game-mode setting may change what a function key does.
- Close competing RGB programs. Exit SignalRGB, OpenRGB, motherboard utilities, game integrations, Windows Dynamic Lighting, and other manufacturer utilities. Leave only the keyboard maker’s utility running, then restart it.
- Reconnect directly to USB. Try another port, preferably a rear motherboard port on a desktop. Razer specifically recommends direct connection and says keyboards with two USB connections should have both connected directly; see its USB and lighting troubleshooting guidance.
- Test another computer. If lighting fails on multiple computers, the keyboard or cable becomes more suspicious. Corsair also recommends checking cables, ports, and another system in its keyboard troubleshooting guide.
- Update only compatible software and firmware. Use the current official utility for the exact model. Record or back up profiles first. Current software names and supported devices change over time.
- Reset the keyboard according to its manual. A reset can remove a corrupted profile, but it may also erase custom mappings and lighting settings.
- Test individual colors and zones. This helps separate a configuration problem from an LED or channel fault.
Testing for an LED or hardware fault
In the official lighting utility, create a new profile, select all keys or zones, choose static white, then test red, green, and blue separately if supported.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →One missing primary color can produce incorrect colors rather than total darkness. Flickering, dimming, or failure when a particular color is selected may indicate an RGB channel problem. Corsair describes this type of primary-color test in its RGB LED testing guidance.
Hardware failure is more likely when:
- Only one key or zone remains dark after profile and color tests.
- One RGB color channel is consistently missing.
- LEDs flicker when the cable moves.
- The keyboard types normally but never lights on multiple computers.
- Lighting fails in both onboard mode and the official utility.
- A spill, impact, or damaged cable came before the failure.
Do not open the keyboard before checking warranty terms. A replacement or manufacturer repair may be safer than an internal repair.
Why the lights turn off during sleep, shutdown, or battery use
Lighting can work normally and still turn off later. Common causes include:
- The keyboard is configured to switch off when the display sleeps.
- USB power is disabled during sleep or shutdown.
- A laptop power profile reduces or disables keyboard lighting on battery.
- A wireless keyboard is conserving battery.
- The lighting utility is not running.
- The hardware profile used without software differs from the desktop profile.
Check the keyboard utility’s sleep, standby, idle, and battery options, then check the laptop maker’s power settings. Razer documents separate display-off and standby behavior and notes that some lighting settings require Synapse to be running; see its sleep and standby guidance. On some Corsair keyboards, the manual distinguishes software mode from onboard mode and documents onboard lighting controls, as shown in the K70 Core TKL documentation.

Laptop-specific checks
- Use the laptop’s documented Fn plus function-key shortcut.
- Press brightness-up several times.
- Open the laptop manufacturer’s control utility.
- Test while connected to AC power.
- Check vendor power and battery settings.
- Check BIOS/UEFI only if the manufacturer documents a keyboard-lighting setting.
- Retest after sleep, hibernation, and any firmware update.
Do not treat a Razer Blade shortcut as a universal laptop shortcut; it applies only to supported Blade models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the keyboard cannot be made to light up
If the keyboard has no physical backlighting hardware, no shortcut, driver, RGB program, or Windows setting can make the keys illuminate. Indicator LEDs alone are not enough.
If the keyboard should have lighting but fails after brightness, profile, USB, software, firmware, and cross-computer tests, contact the manufacturer or use the warranty process. Replace the keyboard only after those basic checks, unless visible damage makes the cause obvious.
Quick decision guide
| What you observe | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| No lighting icon and no backlight listed in specifications | Confirm that the model has physical LEDs; it may not support lighting. |
| Keyboard types, but every key is dark | Increase brightness, create a new static profile, and check RGB software conflicts. |
| Lights work in BIOS or onboard mode but not Windows | Check the Windows profile, utility compatibility, and competing RGB software. |
| Only one color or zone fails | Run a static primary-color test; a channel or hardware fault may be present. |
| Lights stop on battery or after sleep | Check battery, idle, sleep, USB-power, and wireless power-saving settings. |
| Lighting works on another computer | Focus on the original computer’s utility, profile, USB path, or software conflict. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common shortcut for gaming keyboard lights?
There is no universal shortcut. The most common pattern is a dedicated lighting key or Fn plus a key marked with a sun, bulb, or backlight icon. The exact model manual is authoritative.
Why does Fn plus the light key do nothing?
The keyboard may lack backlighting, the shortcut may differ, brightness may be set to 0%, Fn lock or game mode may be active, or manufacturer software may control the profile.

Can RGB software turn on a keyboard without LEDs?
No. Software can configure existing LEDs but cannot add lighting hardware.
Why are only some keys lit?
The active profile may illuminate only a zone or selected keys, or an LED, cable, or RGB channel may be failing. Test a new all-keys static profile and separate red, green, and blue colors.
Why do the lights work before Windows loads but turn off afterward?
Windows software may load a dark profile, another RGB utility may take control, or the correct manufacturer utility may not be installed or compatible with the model.
Why do lights turn off when I unplug my gaming laptop?
The laptop may use a battery-saving profile that reduces or disables keyboard lighting. Check the vendor utility and power settings, then test with the charger connected.
Can I keep keyboard lights on while the computer sleeps?
Sometimes, but it depends on the keyboard, software, USB power, and operating-system settings. Check idle, sleep, standby, and USB-power options in the manufacturer utility and laptop settings.
Do all gaming keyboards have LED lights?
No. Some have only status indicators, decorative lighting, or no LEDs at all. Verify the exact product specification before buying.
The Bottom Line
Find the lighting icon, press the dedicated key or the model-specific Fn combination, and raise brightness before doing anything more complicated. If that fails, use the official utility, a static profile, direct USB power, and a second computer to isolate software from hardware. A keyboard without physical LEDs cannot be illuminated by software.
