To turn on ReShade, install it for the game’s actual executable, launch the game, open the ReShade overlay, and enable effects with the separate Effects Toggle Key. Installing ReShade does not automatically switch on a preset or every shader.
Install ReShade for the game
- Download ReShade from the official ReShade site and run the setup tool.
- Select the game’s actual executable file. ReShade is installed for a target application, so choosing a launcher or a different game executable can prevent it from loading in the game.
- Follow the installer’s rendering API detection or selection. Choose the API the game actually uses rather than guessing. ReShade’s setup supports multiple rendering paths and may warn if an application is known to block it or if a conflicting file is present.
- Finish setup, close the installer, and start the game.
The steps here are for a general Windows game setup. No game was specified, so the correct executable, rendering API, and compatibility policy depend on the particular title.
Open the overlay and enable effects
When ReShade loads, press Home (also labeled Pos1 on some keyboards) to open its in-game overlay. The troubleshooting guide lists this as the default overlay key. The overlay key opens or hides the menu; it does not, by itself, toggle the visual effects.
To switch effects on and off, open the overlay’s Settings and assign a key to Effects Toggle Key. Choose a key that does not conflict with the game’s controls. There is no universal effects-toggle shortcut: it is the key configured in that setting.

If Home does not open the menu, check the overlay settings or the KeyOverlay line in ReShade.ini in the game folder. The troubleshooting guide identifies Shift+F2 as a previous overlay binding, not the current default. An older forum reply likewise mentions Shift+F2 while describing how to set the Effects Toggle Key, so use your installed version’s settings rather than relying on that historical shortcut.
Load shaders or a preset if the effect list is empty
ReShade can load optional shader files. To install the files from the official shader repository:

- Download and extract the repository files from the ReShade shaders repository.
- In the overlay’s settings, add the extracted
Shadersfolder to Effect Search Paths and theTexturesfolder to Texture Search Paths. - Return to the overlay’s Home screen and click Reload.
A preset can configure a particular look, but ReShade does not automatically enable a particular preset just because the installation succeeded. Load or select a preset if you want its effects and settings.

- Check the target executable: confirm setup was applied to the executable that actually starts the game, not just its launcher.
- Check the rendering API: rerun setup for that game and use the API the title uses.
- Check the overlay binding: use Home/Pos1 or inspect
KeyOverlayinReShade.ini. - Check shader paths: if the overlay opens but no effects are listed, confirm the effect and texture paths and click Reload.
- Check the game’s policy: some applications are flagged by ReShade’s setup as blocking or banning it. Review the game’s current rules, particularly for online play; compatibility and enforcement are title-specific.
ReShade’s homepage listed version 6.8.0, released August 2, 2026. Interface details may differ by installed version, so follow the labels shown in your overlay if they do not match older troubleshooting instructions.
