Find the keyboard-backlight icon on your OMEN laptop’s F1–F12 row and press that key once. If nothing happens, press Fn while pressing the backlight key. The exact key varies by OMEN model: it may be F4, F5, F11, or another function key.
HP’s backlit-keyboard documentation confirms that the shortcut and key position depend on the computer’s configuration.
If the HP OMEN keyboard light will not activate, optionally let Outbyte Driver Updater check keyboard and system-device drivers for updates.

- Look across the entire F1–F12 row for an icon showing a keyboard with illuminated lines or rays.
- Press that key once.
- If the light does not respond, hold Fn and press the backlight key.
- Press the key repeatedly to cycle through brightness levels, if your model supports that feature.
Depending on the laptop, repeated presses may cycle through high brightness, low brightness, and off. Other models may simply toggle the light. You should see the keyboard illuminate immediately.
Do not confuse the backlight key with the OMEN key, which opens OMEN Gaming Hub, or the screen-brightness keys, which change the display rather than the keyboard.

Why you may need to press Fn
HP laptops can use the F-row as standard function keys or as action keys for hardware controls. On some systems, the backlight key works by itself; on others, you must use Fn + the backlight key. That is normal and does not necessarily indicate a keyboard problem. HP explains the behavior in its action-key documentation.
Customize RGB lighting in OMEN Gaming Hub
If your OMEN laptop supports RGB or zone lighting, use OMEN Gaming Hub for colors, effects, and profiles:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Search and type OMEN Gaming Hub, then launch the app. You can also open it from Start > All apps, or press the physical OMEN key if your laptop has one.
- Select your laptop or device panel if the app asks you to choose a device.
- Open Lighting. Depending on the model or software generation, the control may use a related label such as LED Control.
- Choose an available mode, such as a static color or animation.
- Adjust brightness, color, or lighting zones.
- Apply or save the configuration.
Some supported systems also provide Light Studio for more advanced effects. However, OMEN Gaming Hub does not expose identical controls on every laptop. HP’s OMEN Gaming Hub guide and compatibility table describe Lighting and Light Studio as model-dependent features.
If the keyboard light turns off by itself
The backlight may be working normally if it shuts off after you stop using the laptop. On supported models, an inactivity timer can turn the light off to conserve battery power. Press a key to wake it; tapping the touchpad may also wake the light on select products.

Some HP laptops let you change the timeout to options such as 30 seconds, 3 minutes, or always on. Those settings are not available on every OMEN configuration. An always-on setting can also reduce battery life compared with allowing the light to turn off during inactivity.
If the OMEN keyboard light will not turn on
1. Confirm that the keyboard is backlit
OMEN branding does not guarantee a backlit or RGB keyboard. Find the exact product number on the laptop’s HP label, packaging, or support information, then open its HP Support page and select Specifications. Check whether the keyboard is described as backlit, RGB, per-key RGB, or zone-lit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If there is no backlight icon and the specifications do not list keyboard illumination, Windows, BIOS, and OMEN Gaming Hub cannot add lighting to hardware that was manufactured without it.
2. Check every F-key and try both shortcut combinations
Do not assume the shortcut is Fn + F4. F4 and F5 are common on HP notebooks, but HP also documents F11 and other possible locations. Check the icon across the entire row, press the key by itself, then try Fn + that key. Press it several times rather than holding it.

3. Enable Action Keys Mode in BIOS
If the correct key does nothing in Windows, HP recommends checking Action Keys Mode:
- Shut down the laptop and wait about five seconds.
- Turn it on and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
- Open System Configuration.
- Enable Action Keys Mode if it is disabled.
- Save the change and restart.
- Test the backlight key again, both alone and with Fn if necessary.
BIOS menus and wording can vary slightly by OMEN model and BIOS version, so do not change unrelated settings.
4. Check the Lighting setting in OMEN Gaming Hub
If the physical shortcut works but the color or zones are wrong, open OMEN Gaming Hub and check Lighting. Make sure the lighting mode is not set to Off, choose a static color or another available mode, and apply the setting. If the panel is missing or changes do not save, close and restart the app.
5. Check official HP software and compatibility
OMEN Gaming Hub features may be unavailable when the laptop is unsupported, when the app does not recognize the model, or when model-specific HP software, drivers, or firmware do not match the Windows installation. Check the laptop’s official HP Support page and the Microsoft Store for applicable updates. Do not assume that installing a generic RGB utility will restore a missing hardware feature, and do not expect an update to fix every lighting problem.

6. Separate a configuration problem from a hardware problem
The issue is more likely configuration-related when the backlight icon exists, the keyboard illuminates briefly during startup, OMEN Gaming Hub shows Lighting controls, or the light responds after using Fn or changing Action Keys Mode.
Arrange HP support or service if the specifications confirm a backlit keyboard but it never illuminates during startup or in Windows, compatible lighting controls never appear, only certain keys or zones work, or the laptop has suffered liquid damage, impact, or a keyboard replacement. A timeout alone is not evidence of failed LEDs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy your OMEN laptop may not have RGB lighting
OMEN keyboards can differ substantially even within the same product family. Depending on the configuration, a laptop may have no backlight, a single-color backlight, one-zone RGB, four-zone RGB, or per-key RGB. The available hardware determines what OMEN Gaming Hub can control.
A backlit keyboard is therefore not automatically an RGB keyboard. A white or single-color light may work normally while advanced color, zone, animation, or Light Studio controls remain unavailable.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis checklist
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No light and no backlight icon | The keyboard may not be backlit | Check the exact model specifications |
| Backlight icon is present, but the key does nothing | Fn or action-key behavior is preventing the shortcut | Try Fn, then check BIOS Action Keys Mode |
| The light turns off after inactivity | Normal timeout behavior | Press a key and adjust the timeout if your model allows it |
| White light works but RGB options are missing | The keyboard may have limited lighting hardware | Check the model’s lighting compatibility |
| OMEN Gaming Hub has no Lighting panel | Unsupported configuration or software-recognition problem | Verify compatibility and official HP software |
| Only part of the keyboard illuminates | A zone/profile setting or hardware issue | Check Lighting settings; contact HP if confirmed hardware is affected |
