While you’re inside power armor in Fallout 4, hold the button you use to open the Pip-Boy. The reported default controls are Tab on PC, B on Xbox, and Circle on PlayStation; hold the same button again to turn the lamp off.
Turn the power armor headlamp on
- Enter a power armor suit.
- Hold the Pip-Boy button: Tab on PC, B on Xbox, or Circle on PlayStation.
- Release the button after the lamp switches on. Hold it again to switch the lamp off.
The important part is to hold the button rather than tap it. The platform mappings are reported by players; Bethesda’s Xbox help manual provides control context but does not itself give the headlamp instruction. Community sources describing the headlamp controls include a Steam Community guide and a player support discussion.

If the light does not respond
- Make sure you are seated inside the power armor, then hold the Pip-Boy access button.
- The headlamp uses the same hotkey as the Pip-Boy light, according to this secondary reference.
- Do not assume every helmet with a lamp-like feature has an operable light: the reference says the combat armor helmet lamp is aesthetic and cannot be activated.
The same reference describes the T-45, T-51, and T-60 lamps as mounted on the helmet, while the X-01 light comes from its eyes.
