On mobile, open the video’s watch page, tap Remix > Edit into a Short, choose up to 60 seconds, add any available edits, and upload. You can also make a Short from a transcript or timeline in Studio, or remix eligible content from another creator. These are different workflows with different limits and permissions.
Choose the right way to make your Short

Make a Short from your own video in the YouTube app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for a public long-form video that you uploaded.
- Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short. This option is only available for eligible videos. Private or unlisted videos and videos with third-party copyright claims cannot be used this way.
- Select up to 60 seconds of the video and tap Next.
- Add any available creative touches, such as text or filters, then upload the Short.
YouTube says Shorts made from your videos link back to the original video, giving new viewers a way to discover it. In this workflow, you cannot add music or other sounds from YouTube’s Audio Library.
If “Edit into a Short” is missing
Check the video’s remix eligibility and the Shorts remixing setting in YouTube Studio. If the video is private or unlisted, or has a third-party copyright claim, it is not eligible for this workflow. Sampling may also be restricted by the setting.
Create a Short in YouTube Studio using a transcript or timeline
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Videos.
- Select the video, then choose Clips and Shorts.
- Start creating a Short. Select transcript text to identify a passage, or set the start and end points in the timeline editor.
- Review and adjust the selection, then create the Short.
Studio may offer AI-powered suggestions and an AI-generated outline, but these features are not available everywhere. YouTube lists availability in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and for English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Availability can vary by feature and may change.

Remix another creator’s video or Short
On an eligible source video’s watch page in the YouTube mobile app, tap Remix and choose from the options YouTube makes available. Depending on the source, these can include Cut, Green Screen, Collab, or Use this sound. YouTube attributes remixed audio or video to the original source.
Remix access depends on the source video’s settings and eligibility. A creator may restrict remixing, and privacy settings or copyright restrictions can make a video unavailable. Music licensing can also limit use or result in a block. Using YouTube’s remix tools does not grant unrestricted rights to every source or override copyright restrictions.

If you make a Short elsewhere using protected material and upload it, YouTube says it may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown. Use material you own or have permission to use, and check the rights and terms that apply to any music, footage, or other content.
Upload an edited Short from a computer or phone
YouTube’s general Shorts guidance allows Shorts up to three minutes and supports uploading vertical videos from a computer or smartphone. This is separate from the mobile Edit into a Short tool, whose documented selection limit is up to 60 seconds.

- Prepare a vertical video that meets YouTube’s current Shorts requirements and that you have the right to upload.
- On a computer, in YouTube Studio, choose Create > Upload videos. On a phone, use the YouTube app’s upload flow.
- Complete the draft details, review the video and audience settings, and publish when ready.
External editing software is optional; YouTube’s app and Studio workflows can handle the native creation routes above. Check YouTube’s current upload guidance if your video is close to the duration limit or if the upload flow labels it differently.
