How to Undo Changes in WordPress: Revisions, Autosaves, Trash, Styles, and Backups

A complete WordPress recovery guide: use Undo for current edits, Revisions for saved versions, Autosaves after crashes, Trash for deleted posts and pages, Style revisions for global design changes, and backups for site-wide damage.

Use the Undo arrow (or Ctrl+Z/Cmd+Z) for a change you just made. For an earlier saved version, open the post or page’s Revisions; for a deleted post or page, use Trash; for Site Editor styling, use Style revisions. If plugins, themes, settings, files, or many database records are affected, restore a backup made before the incident.

Choose the recovery method that matches the change

WordPress does not have one universal “undo everything” button. Each recovery tool covers a different kind of change, and choosing the wrong one can waste time or roll back more than you intended.

What happened Use What it restores Key limitation
You changed text, blocks, or settings moments ago while editing Undo/redo Actions in the current editing session It does not reach changes from an earlier session
A post or page was saved or published earlier Revisions Saved drafts and published updates for that item Only revisions that WordPress retained are available
The editor or browser failed before you saved Autosave recovery An autosaved version of the post or page It appears only when an autosave exists
A post or page was deleted Trash The deleted item, which can be restored On WordPress.com, the Trash window is 30 days
A Site Editor style change caused the problem Style revisions An earlier global style version This is for styles, not a general site rollback
Plugins, themes, settings, files, or many records were changed A full backup The site state captured by that backup It can affect the whole site and depends on backup scope and plan availability

Start with the narrowest recovery that covers the problem. A one-paragraph mistake should not lead to a whole-site restore; a broken theme should not be treated as a text revision.

Undo a change made moments ago

When the content is still open in the WordPress editor, the quickest route is the Undo control in the upper-left toolbar.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

  1. Keep the post, page, or other content open in the editor where the mistake occurred.
  2. Select the Undo arrow in the upper-left toolbar. Select it repeatedly to reverse several recent actions.
  3. On Windows, use Ctrl+Z. On macOS, use Cmd+Z.
  4. If you reverse too far, use Redo. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Y on Windows and Cmd+Shift+Z on macOS.

These controls apply to actions made in the current editing session. They are not a history of every change ever made to the site. If you close the editor, return later, or need a version from an earlier day, move to Revisions instead.

Restore an earlier saved post or page revision

Revisions are the normal recovery path for an older version of one post or page. The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. A revision comparison can show content that was added, removed, or modified before you restore anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the revision history

  1. In the WordPress administration area, open Pages or Posts.
  2. Select the item you need to repair and open it in the editor.
  3. Open the Settings sidebar if it is collapsed.
  4. Find Revisions and select the number beside it. That number indicates the saved revisions available for the item.

Inspect and restore the right version

  1. Use the revision timeline or revision list to move to the date and version you want to examine.
  2. Review the comparison carefully. Look for the title, paragraphs, blocks, links, and other content that changed.
  3. When the displayed version is the one you want, select Restore.
  4. Review the restored content in the editor before saving or publishing it.

Restoring a revision is targeted: it changes that post or page rather than reverting unrelated content elsewhere on the site. If the revision you need is absent, do not assume the item is unrecoverable yet; check for an autosave, confirm that you opened the correct content, inspect Trash if the item was deleted, and then look for a site backup.

Recover an autosave after a crash or lost connection

An autosave is a special revision that does not overwrite the published content. WordPress may create one while you work, so it can preserve edits that never became a normal saved draft.

  1. Reopen the affected post or page after the browser, editor, or connection failure.
  2. Look for the notice that an autosaved version is available.
  3. Follow the notice’s link to view the autosaved content.
  4. Compare it with the current saved version and keep the autosave only if it contains the edits you need.
  5. Save the recovered content as a draft or publish it after checking the page carefully.

An autosave notice is not guaranteed. If no notice appears, WordPress may not have an autosave for that editing session, or you may be viewing a different item or site. In that case, use the Revisions, Trash, and backup checks in that order when they fit the situation.

Recover a deleted post or page from Trash

Deletion is different from editing an existing item. Do not search the revision timeline first; check the Trash for the deleted post or page.

  1. Open Pages or Posts, depending on what was deleted.
  2. Select the Trash tab.
  3. Locate the item, move the pointer over it, and select Restore.
  4. Open the restored item, review it, and edit or publish it when ready.

WordPress.com states that a deleted page or post remains in Trash for 30 days. Restoring it returns it as a draft, so it is not automatically republished; you can edit it and publish it again when the content is ready. The Trash is intended for deleted posts and pages, not as the normal recovery path for templates or template parts.

Undo a template or global style change in the Site Editor

If the problem is a site-wide appearance change made through the Site Editor, post revisions are the wrong tool. Use the Site Editor’s style history instead.

  1. Open the Site Editor.
  2. Open Style revisions.
  3. Select an earlier style version from the available history.
  4. Choose Apply to use that version.
  5. Check representative pages and templates after applying it, because a global style change can affect more than the screen on which you noticed the problem.

Style revisions address style changes. They do not restore deleted posts, recover an earlier paragraph in a page, or roll back plugin and theme files.

Roll back site-wide damage with a backup

Use a backup when the incident extends beyond one piece of content—for example, a plugin or theme change, a settings change, file damage, or a large number of altered database records. WordPress.com describes a backup restore as making the site appear exactly as it did at the selected point, subject to what that backup includes and what the plan makes available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before restoring

  • Identify the approximate time the site was still working.
  • Choose a backup taken before the damaging change, not one created afterward.
  • Confirm what the backup contains. A backup may cover the database, files, or both; its scope determines what can actually be recovered.
  • Record what changed after the backup. A restore can remove legitimate content or settings added since that capture.
  • If the site is currently usable, preserve any new content you cannot afford to lose before starting a broad rollback.

After restoring

  • Check the front end and administration area.
  • Open the pages, posts, templates, and key settings related to the incident.
  • Test the feature or workflow that originally failed.
  • Confirm that recent content, media, and user-facing links are in the state you expect.

A full restore is deliberately broader than Undo or a single revision. Use it only when the damage warrants site-wide recovery and you have accepted the effect on changes made after the selected backup.

What to do when the Revisions label is missing

A missing Revisions label usually means there is no retained revision for that item, but several checks can distinguish an unavailable history from a simple navigation mistake.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Check the content type. Make sure you are editing the correct post or page, rather than a different item with a similar title.
  • Check the site. Multisite users and people who manage more than one WordPress installation can easily open the wrong dashboard.
  • Look for an autosave notice. An autosave may exist even when you do not see the revision you expected.
  • Inspect Trash. If the item was deleted, it may be recoverable there instead of through the editor’s revision panel.
  • Look for a backup. A pre-change backup is the remaining broad recovery option when item-level history is unavailable.

Revisions depend on retained history. If no saved draft or published update was recorded for the item, there is no revision timeline to restore from.

A practical recovery decision tree

  1. Is the mistake still visible in the open editor? Use Undo. If you undo too far, use Redo.
  2. Was the desired content saved earlier? Open Revisions for that post or page and restore the correct version.
  3. Did a crash or connection failure happen before saving? Reopen the item and follow the autosave notice if one appears.
  4. Was the post or page deleted? Open its Trash tab and restore it. On WordPress.com, check within the 30-day window.
  5. Was the problem caused by a global style edit? Open Site Editor → Style revisions and apply the earlier style.
  6. Did the incident involve plugins, themes, settings, files, or many records? Find a usable pre-incident backup and evaluate the whole-site impact before restoring it.

How to avoid making recovery harder

  • When comparing revisions, inspect the actual differences before selecting Restore; the newest version is not always the correct one.
  • Use the narrowest tool that solves the problem. Reverting one page is safer than restoring the entire site when only that page is wrong.
  • After recovering a deleted item, remember that it returns as a draft on WordPress.com and needs a deliberate review before publication.
  • For a broad failure, establish which files, database records, settings, and content the backup includes before treating it as a complete snapshot.
  • When no item-level history exists, stop repeatedly searching the editor and move to the autosave, Trash, and backup checks that can still apply.

Key distinctions to remember

Undo/redo is immediate and narrow: it covers the current editing session. Revisions and autosaves cover saved content history for an individual item, with autosaves specifically protecting work that was not saved as a normal draft. Trash is for deleted posts and pages, with a 30-day WordPress.com recovery period. Style revisions target Site Editor style changes. Backups are the broadest option and can return the site to an earlier point, but the restore can affect the entire site and is limited by the backup’s scope and plan.
