Before you start: identify what is actually failing
“Won’t uninstall” can describe several different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The uninstall button does nothing or closes immediately.
- Windows reports that the game is running, access is denied, or the uninstaller cannot be found.
- The launcher says the game is uninstalled, but its files still occupy disk space.
- The files were deleted, but Steam, Epic, Windows, or another launcher still reports the game as installed.
- The game is installed on another internal or external drive.
- Only a launcher, anti-cheat service, DRM component, or shared game service remains.
The correct fix depends on the platform that installed the game. A Steam or Epic installation should normally be removed through that launcher. An Xbox or Microsoft Store game is a protected Store package and should not be treated like an ordinary folder.

Protect saves, screenshots, and mods first
Uninstall behavior varies by game. Local saves, configuration files, screenshots, mod profiles, and cloud-synchronized data are not necessarily stored or removed together. If you may want anything later, back it up before uninstalling.

Common locations include the game’s installation folder, DocumentsMy Games, %LOCALAPPDATA%, %APPDATA%, and %PROGRAMDATA%. These are only starting points: do not delete every folder with the game’s name without checking its contents. Cloud saves also do not guarantee that local settings, screenshots, or mod data will be preserved.
Close the game and launcher completely
A running game, updater, crash reporter, or launcher helper can lock files and prevent removal.
- Save your work and exit the game.
- Exit Steam, Epic Games Launcher, the Xbox app, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Riot Client, or the relevant launcher.
- Check the notification area beside the Windows clock. Right-click the launcher icon and choose Exit if that option is available.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- End only processes clearly belonging to the game or launcher, such as the game executable, updater, crash reporter, or launcher helper.
Do not terminate arbitrary Windows processes. If the game or launcher starts again immediately, restart Windows and retry the uninstall before opening other applications.

For an optional command-line fallback, use the exact executable name in an elevated Command Prompt:
taskkill /F /IM game.exe
Replace game.exe with the actual filename. This is not a universal command, and ending the wrong process can cause data loss or destabilize the current Windows session.

Uninstall it through the original launcher
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Manage > Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
The wording can vary by Steam client version. If Steam reports that the game is gone but disk space has not returned, restart Steam and inspect its storage or library-folder management screens. Check for Workshop content, mods, shader caches, screenshots, or another copy on a different drive.
Do not delete the entire Steam directory to remove one game. If you are uninstalling Steam itself but want to preserve downloaded games, Valve’s official removal guidance explains how to preserve the steamapps folder. Removing Steam can otherwise remove game content.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game and click the three dots beside its title.
- Choose Uninstall, then confirm.
These are the steps in Epic’s official support instructions. If Epic’s record and the folder disagree, restart the launcher and confirm the actual installation location. For a corrupt or invalid game directory, follow Epic’s game-folder recovery guidance; delete only the confirmed game folder, not the whole Epic Games directory.
Xbox app and Microsoft Store games
Try the Xbox app first, or use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Restart the PC if the removal fails. Where available, open the Xbox app or Gaming Services entry’s advanced options and try Repair; use Reset only if necessary, because it can remove app data.
Do not take ownership of C:Program FilesWindowsApps, delete WindowsApps, or run random PowerShell package-removal commands as a first-line fix. Microsoft distinguishes Store apps from conventional desktop programs, and its Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is not intended for Microsoft Store apps. Use Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance when the Xbox or Settings route fails.

EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Riot, and other launchers
Use the launcher that installed the game. A game can also install Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Epic Online Services, DRM, or another service. A remaining component is not automatically unwanted: it may be shared by other games. Remove it only when the vendor identifies it as dedicated to the deleted game and no other installed title needs it.
Try Windows’ uninstall paths
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft documents these routes in its uninstall guidance.
Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the game.
- Open its … menu.
- Select Uninstall and complete the game’s uninstaller.
Control Panel
- Search Windows for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the game and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
Control Panel is a useful fallback when a conventional desktop program has no working uninstall control in the newer Settings interface.
If the uninstall button does nothing
Close all related processes, restart Windows, and retry through the original launcher. If the launcher itself is broken, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the launcher, choose Advanced options, and use Repair where offered. If Repair does not help, Microsoft lists Reset as a subsequent option for supported apps, but Reset may remove app data and is not available for every desktop program.
Reinstalling the same game or launcher can also restore a missing or damaged uninstaller. It temporarily uses disk space, so ensure the drive has enough room. After the repair installation, run the normal uninstall again.

Match the fix to the error
“The program is running” or “another program is using this file”
Exit the game and launcher, check Task Manager for clearly related processes, and restart Windows if necessary. Anti-cheat, updater, or security software may still have a file open. Do not delete the folder while those processes are active.
“Access denied”
Restart the PC, sign in with an administrator account, and retry the official uninstaller. The cause may be a locked file, antivirus scanning, another account’s ownership, a disconnected or failing drive, or a protected Microsoft Store package. Do not casually disable security software, and do not make “take ownership” the default solution—particularly for WindowsApps or shared program directories.
If files cannot be read as well as deleted, check the drive and escalate to the launcher or publisher. A work- or school-managed computer may also be restricted by policy.
“Windows cannot find the uninstaller”
This usually means the installation record or uninstaller is incomplete. Try the other Windows uninstall interface, repair or reinstall the same game or launcher, then run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose the troubleshooter’s uninstall option and select the game if it appears. Microsoft says the tool can address corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall information for conventional Windows programs. If the game is not listed, it may ask for a product code; that is an advanced path better suited to experienced users or IT staff. Restart Windows afterward and check both Installed apps and the installation folder.

The game is not listed, or it is listed but the folder is missing
If the folder is missing but the game remains listed, the uninstall record is stale. Try the other uninstall interface, repair or reinstall the game to restore its uninstaller, then use Microsoft’s troubleshooter. Do not start deleting registry keys manually. Registry editing is a narrowly targeted last resort, not a routine cleanup technique.
Clean up leftover files safely
Manual cleanup is appropriate only after the launcher uninstall has completed or failed irreparably, the game’s installation folder has been positively identified, and you have backed up wanted saves, settings, screenshots, and mods.
- Open the installation location from the launcher if possible.
- Confirm the folder name and approximate size. Check other library drives and external drives too.
- Copy any desired save or configuration data elsewhere.
- Delete only the confirmed game folder.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Restart the launcher and check whether it still reports the game as installed.
Also check DocumentsMy Games, %LOCALAPPDATA%, %APPDATA%, and %PROGRAMDATA%, but treat them as possible save, settings, cache, or shared-data locations—not automatic deletion targets. Mod managers may place files outside the main game directory, and DLC may be stored inside the base-game folder.
If the launcher still says the game is installed after its files are gone, repair the launcher or its library. Repeatedly deleting folders can make the registration mismatch worse.
How to verify the uninstall worked
- The game no longer appears as installed in its launcher.
- It is absent from Windows Installed apps or Programs and Features, unless a known stale entry still needs the troubleshooter.
- The confirmed installation folder is gone.
- The Recycle Bin has been emptied and the expected disk space is available.
- No game-specific process or dedicated service remains.
- Shared anti-cheat, DRM, or launcher components were left alone unless you confirmed they were no longer needed.
Mac users
Use the game’s launcher to remove the game when possible. Dragging an application to the Trash may leave launcher data, saves, caches, or support files behind. For Steam itself, Valve’s official Mac instructions explain that moving the Steam application to the Trash is not a complete removal and distinguish preserving SteamApps from deleting Steam’s support data. Windows procedures and WindowsApps advice do not apply to macOS.
When to contact support
Escalate to Microsoft for a Store/Xbox registration problem, to the launcher vendor for a broken library or launcher, and to the game publisher for dedicated DRM, anti-cheat, or game-specific uninstall failures. Steam notes that third-party gameplay and technical problems generally belong with the game’s developer or publisher rather than Steam Support.
If the software is suspicious or may be malware, do not run an unknown uninstaller. Scan with Windows Security or another reputable security product first; if there is evidence of an active compromise, disconnect from the network and follow Microsoft’s malware-removal guidance. On an employer- or school-managed computer, contact the administrator instead of bypassing policy or permissions.
