If Xbox Game Bar will not open with Win+G, repeatedly triggers an ms-gamingoverlay error, or crashes, try Repair and Reset first. If that fails, remove the Xbox Game Bar AppX package with an elevated PowerShell command, reinstall it from Microsoft Store, and restart Windows.
This procedure was checked against Windows 11 guidance on August 18, 2026. Settings labels and Store availability can vary by Windows 11 build, language, account, and device policy.
Before you begin
- Use a Windows 11 PC with an internet connection.
- Have administrator access available for PowerShell.
- Expect some Game Bar-specific settings, widget layouts, or local app data to be reset.
- Removing Xbox Game Bar does not uninstall your games.
- On a work- or school-managed computer, Microsoft Store, PowerShell, AppX installation, or gaming features may be restricted. Contact the administrator instead of attempting to bypass those policies.
The component being repaired is Xbox Game Bar, generally represented by the AppX package name Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay. It is separate from the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Xbox Live services, and individual Game Bar widgets.
1. Try Repair, then Reset
Full removal is more disruptive than repairing the existing installation, so start here:

- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xbox Game Bar. Some Windows 11 builds may display it as Game Bar.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Test Game Bar with Win+G.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.
Repair attempts to correct the installation without clearing app data. Reset restores the app to its default state and may clear local settings or layout data. Microsoft support guidance recommends these options before package removal. See the Microsoft Q&A repair and reset guidance.
2. Uninstall Xbox Game Bar through Settings
On some Windows 11 versions, the normal uninstall option is available:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall, then confirm.
If Uninstall is missing, use PowerShell. Do not remove Microsoft Store as a workaround; Microsoft says uninstalling the Store through unsupported methods is not supported. Use its supported Repair or Reset options instead. See Microsoft’s Microsoft Store recovery guidance.
3. Remove Xbox Game Bar with PowerShell
The following command targets the matching Game Bar package for the current user context:

- Open Start and search for PowerShell or Windows Terminal.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Paste the command exactly as shown and press Enter.
- Wait for the prompt to return.
- Restart Windows.
Get-AppxPackage locates installed AppX packages. The wildcard filter identifies Xbox Game Bar, and Remove-AppxPackage removes the matching package in the current user’s package context.

Microsoft documents the general AppX discovery and removal process, while the exact Game Bar package identifier is commonly provided through Microsoft Q&A rather than a dedicated Microsoft Support reinstall article. Microsoft also warns that AppX removal can be difficult to reverse, so check the package target before running removal. Read the Microsoft AppX troubleshooting guidance.
Optional: verify the package first
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*If this returns package information, Windows has a matching Game Bar package registered for the current user. If it returns nothing, Game Bar may already be absent, registered incorrectly, installed for another user, or in an unusual package state. An empty result does not prove that the package is absent from every account on the PC.
4. Reinstall Xbox Game Bar from Microsoft Store
After restarting, open the Game Bar Store listing with this Windows Store URI:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9NZKPSTSNW4P- Open an ordinary PowerShell or Windows Terminal window, or press Win+R and enter the URI.
- Allow Microsoft Store to open.
- Select Install or Get.
- Wait for installation to finish.
- Restart Windows again.
- Press Win+G to test the overlay.
The product ID 9NZKPSTSNW4P and this Store URI are identified in Microsoft Q&A guidance. The Store name, button text, catalog availability, and localization may change. If the listing is already installed, look for Update instead. You can also open Microsoft Store, go to Library, select Get updates, and search for Xbox Game Bar. 5. If the Microsoft Store link does not work
Reset the Store cache
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Press Enter.
- Wait for the cache-reset window to finish and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Retry the Game Bar Store URI.
Repair or reset Microsoft Store
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Store > Advanced options. Select Repair first. If that fails, select Reset. Do not use third-party tools to uninstall Microsoft Store.

Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Store and AppX behavior can depend on Windows components and servicing updates.

6. Choose the right fix if Game Bar is still broken

7. Reinstall Gaming Services separately
Gaming Services is not Xbox Game Bar. Use this separate repair only when Xbox app sign-in, PC Game Pass, or game launching is also failing.

start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHNInstall Gaming Services from the Store and restart Windows. The -allusers option is broader than the ordinary Game Bar command and may require administrator rights. Microsoft Q&A guidance identifies 9MWPM2CQNLHN for Gaming Services; treat this as a separate component repair, not as part of reinstalling Game Bar.

8. Advanced: re-register Game Bar without removing it
Re-registration can help when the package files still exist but registration is damaged. It is not a substitute for reinstalling a package that has genuinely been removed.

What this process does—and does not—remove
- It removes or repairs the Xbox Game Bar app package, not your installed games.
- It does not automatically remove the Xbox app or Gaming Services.
- It may clear Game Bar preferences, widget layout, shortcuts, or other app-specific local data.
- It does not guarantee that account data, overlay settings, graphics-driver settings, or game-specific overlays will remain unchanged.
Why third-party debloaters are a poor first choice
Built-in Settings, PowerShell, Microsoft Store, and—when appropriate—WinGet provide a more controlled recovery path. Third-party uninstallers and debloaters may remove registrations or dependencies that other Xbox components need, making diagnosis harder. Use them only if you fully understand the changes and have a recovery plan.

Will uninstalling Xbox Game Bar uninstall my games?
No. Xbox Game Bar is a separate Windows app package. Your installed games are not removed, although Game Bar’s own settings, widget layouts, or local app data may be reset or lost.

It usually means Windows tried to open the Game Bar protocol but could not find or launch a working handler. Confirm the app is installed, repair or reset it, reinstall it from Microsoft Store, and restart Windows.
Can I reinstall Game Bar without Microsoft Store?
Microsoft Store is the normal recovery route in this procedure. WinGet may provide an alternative when its Microsoft Store search clearly returns Xbox Game Bar, but package identifiers and availability can change.
