How to Use NVIDIA Filters on Supported Games

NVIDIA Freestyle filters work on many supported games—not every game. Here is the current NVIDIA App setup, shortcut guide, filter advice, HDR help, and troubleshooting.

Short answer: NVIDIA filters—also called Freestyle or Game Filters—let you change a game’s colors, contrast, sharpness, HDR appearance, and visual style through the NVIDIA in-game overlay. They do not work on literally every PC game. They work on many NVIDIA-supported titles, and NVIDIA currently says Freestyle supports more than 1,200 games, although compatibility can change after game, driver, anti-cheat, or NVIDIA App updates.

The current setup uses the NVIDIA App, not primarily the older GeForce Experience software. Once the overlay is enabled, launch a supported local Windows game, press Alt+F3, add filters, and save the per-game result.

What NVIDIA filters actually do

NVIDIA Freestyle is a driver-level, real-time post-processing system. The Game Filter panel in the NVIDIA overlay applies effects to the final image displayed by the game.

That means filters can make an image look brighter, more colorful, sharper, higher-contrast, or more cinematic. They generally do not add higher-resolution textures, improve geometry, create ray tracing, enable DLSS, or increase the game’s underlying rendering quality. They change the presentation of the image after the game has rendered it.

  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Common names you may encounter include:

  • RTX Dynamic Vibrance: increases perceived color separation and clarity.
  • RTX HDR: converts compatible SDR output into an HDR-style presentation.
  • Sharpen or Details: increases apparent edge clarity.
  • Color, Brightness/Contrast, and Saturation: adjust the overall image.
  • Vignette, Depth of Field, Film Grain, Black and White, and other artistic effects: change the game’s visual style.

Filter names, controls, and availability vary by title, GPU, driver, and NVIDIA App version.

Important: “Any game” does not mean every PC game. NVIDIA filters are a compatibility-based feature, not a universal filter layer. A game may be unsupported, expose only some effects, or stop working after an update.

What you need before starting

These instructions primarily apply to local Windows PC gaming with:

  • A compatible NVIDIA GeForce GPU.
  • A current NVIDIA graphics driver.
  • The NVIDIA App.
  • A game that NVIDIA currently supports for Freestyle/Game Filters.
  • The NVIDIA in-game overlay enabled.

For RTX HDR, you also need an HDR-capable display and correctly configured Windows HDR. NVIDIA supports both Game Ready and Studio drivers, but Game Ready is generally the appropriate choice for gaming unless you have a specific reason to use Studio drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the NVIDIA App and driver

  1. Download the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official website.
  2. Install it and allow it to update or install a compatible graphics driver.
  3. For gaming, choose the current Game Ready driver unless your workload requires Studio drivers.
  4. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

Older guides may tell you to install GeForce Experience. Treat that as legacy guidance. NVIDIA is directing users toward the NVIDIA App and has announced plans to switch off critical GeForce Experience web servers in the future; the exact migration experience can depend on your installation.

Enable the in-game overlay

Open the NVIDIA App, select Settings, and find the setting under a section such as Features, Overlay, or In-game overlay. Turn the overlay on. NVIDIA changes menu labels between releases, so follow the current wording in your installed version rather than relying on an old screenshot.

If the overlay is enabled, you should be able to open it with Alt+Z while a game is running.

How to apply NVIDIA filters

  1. Launch the game locally. Start the game normally and reach active gameplay. Do not use GeForce NOW or another cloud service for this initial test.
  2. Try the direct shortcut. Press Alt+F3. NVIDIA historically documented this as the direct Freestyle shortcut.
  3. Use the overlay fallback. If Alt+F3 does nothing, press Alt+Z and look for Game Filter, Freestyle, or similar wording. Current labels can differ from older GeForce Experience documentation.
  4. Choose a filter slot. Select one of the available slots in the Game Filter panel.
  5. Add an effect. Choose Add Filter, select an effect, and adjust its sliders.
  6. Keep the first test simple. Add one filter at a time so you can identify what changes the picture or causes a problem.
  7. Close the overlay and test. Judge the result during normal gameplay, not only in a menu or loading screen.

NVIDIA has historically stored filter preferences per game. After configuring a profile, exit and relaunch the game to verify that it remains active. Recheck the profile after a driver or game update because NVIDIA has documented cases where Game Filter profiles were not saved correctly after driver updates.

How to check whether a game is supported

Use NVIDIA’s current Supported Games and Apps information rather than trusting a static list from an old tutorial. NVIDIA says Freestyle supports more than 1,200 games at the time of publication, but that number and the supported catalog can change.

A game can fail even when it appears related to a supported title. Compatibility may depend on the exact executable, rendering API, presentation method, launcher, anti-cheat system, and current driver. Games running through remote sessions, emulators, cloud services, or protected rendering paths may not expose Game Filters.

Freestyle is also not a generic SDK that any developer can independently add to any game. NVIDIA maintains compatibility through its software ecosystem and works with studios and supported titles.

Best filters for different goals

For stronger colors and visibility

Start with RTX Dynamic Vibrance, if the game exposes it. It is intended to improve color distinction rather than simply turning every color up. A mild brightness or contrast adjustment can help in dark scenes, and a small amount of sharpening may improve clarity.

Use restraint. Too much vibrance can make foliage, warning indicators, skin tones, and user-interface elements look unnatural. It can also reduce rather than improve readability when colors become visually similar.

For a sharper image

Use Sharpen or Details at a low-to-moderate setting. Sharpening can compensate for softness from temporal anti-aliasing or upscaling, but it cannot restore detail that the game never rendered.

Disable the game’s own sharpening first if you are testing NVIDIA sharpening. Stacking sharpening from the game, DLSS or another upscaler, and Freestyle can create bright halos, shimmering, grain, or eye strain. NVIDIA has historically described Freestyle sharpening controls as adjustable from 0 to 100 percent, but current filter names and ranges may differ.

For an HDR-style image

RTX HDR is designed to apply HDR-style output to compatible SDR games. It requires an HDR-capable display and suitable Windows and monitor configuration. NVIDIA describes support across a broad range of DirectX and Vulkan games, but it is not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTX HDR is not the same as native HDR. A game’s own HDR implementation may look better, worse, or simply different depending on its tone mapping, your monitor, and calibration. Compare modes rather than assuming RTX HDR is automatically superior.

For a clean test, avoid layering multiple HDR systems. Disable RTX HDR and native game HDR, restart the game, and test one mode at a time. Also check Windows HDR, the monitor’s HDR mode, in-game gamma, and full-range versus limited-range RGB settings.

For screenshots and cinematic effects

Vignette, film grain, depth of field, black-and-white, and color-grading filters can work well for photo mode or single-player screenshots. They are usually poor choices for competitive play because they can obscure the HUD, soften important details, introduce motion discomfort, or make targets harder to see.

Three restrained starting presets

These are starting points, not universal best settings. Different games and displays need different values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clarity preset

  • Low sharpening or Details.
  • Mild contrast.
  • Optional low RTX Dynamic Vibrance.

If edges develop halos or distant objects shimmer, lower sharpening before changing anything else.

Color preset

  • Moderate color adjustment.
  • Small brightness or contrast changes only if needed.
  • Do not combine extreme saturation with extreme contrast.

Compare a familiar scene with the filter disabled. If shadows lose detail or highlights clip, return the affected slider toward its default.

HDR preset

  • RTX HDR only during the first test.
  • Windows HDR enabled and the monitor correctly configured.
  • Native game HDR and Auto HDR disabled for comparison.

Calibrate the display and compare the same scene in SDR, native HDR, and RTX HDR where available. Screenshots and recordings may not reproduce exactly what you see on the HDR display.

Why NVIDIA filters are not working

Alt+F3 does nothing

  1. Confirm that the NVIDIA App is installed and running.
  2. Confirm that the in-game overlay is enabled.
  3. Launch the game first, then try Alt+Z.
  4. Look for Game Filter or Freestyle in the overlay.
  5. Check whether the game is currently supported.
  6. Try borderless-windowed mode instead of exclusive full-screen.
  7. Close other overlays temporarily.
  8. Check whether another application has taken the keyboard shortcut.
  9. Update the NVIDIA App and driver, then restart Windows.

Potential conflicts include Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, capture software, streaming software, and graphics software on hybrid laptops. None is guaranteed to be incompatible in every title or version, so test methodically rather than uninstalling everything immediately.

The Game Filter option is missing

The likely causes are an unsupported game, an outdated driver or App, failed game detection, an unsupported executable, limited title-specific support, or an overlay that did not initialize.

If your NVIDIA App version provides manual program management, add the correct game executable in its graphics or program-management area, then relaunch the game. NVIDIA’s release documentation describes managing and removing manually added program entries, but the exact controls may move between releases.

Filters appear but do not change the image

  • Switch from exclusive full-screen to borderless windowed mode.
  • Disable other visual injectors and overlays temporarily.
  • Remove every filter, then add one filter at a time.
  • Start the NVIDIA App before starting the game.
  • Check whether the game recently updated.
  • If the issue began immediately after a driver update, consider testing a previous driver.
  • In multiplayer, test only with filters NVIDIA exposes for that title.

The game crashes after enabling a filter

  1. Open the filter panel and remove the newest filter.
  2. If necessary, disable all filters and restart the game.
  3. If the overlay cannot open, reset or remove the game’s profile through the NVIDIA App where that option is available.
  4. Only then consider reinstalling or rolling back the graphics driver.

Avoid making undocumented configuration-folder deletions your first fix. Such instructions are version-specific and can remove unrelated profiles.

Performance drops or frame pacing worsens

Post-processing cost varies by filter and game, so do not assume filters have zero performance impact. Compare the game with filters off and on in the same scene. Use the smallest filter stack that achieves the desired result, and avoid stacking sharpening, depth, HDR, and cinematic effects unnecessarily.

The NVIDIA App includes in-game performance statistics in recent releases, including FPS and 1% low FPS options. These can help identify whether a filter affects average performance or frame pacing. For latency-sensitive competitive games, remove filters if readability, frame pacing, or input responsiveness worsens.

Are NVIDIA filters safe in online games?

Do not assume that every NVIDIA filter is automatically safe with every anti-cheat system. NVIDIA has historically limited some Freestyle and curated ReShade effects in competitive games, and a title’s current publisher rules and anti-cheat behavior can change.

  • Use only filters exposed by NVIDIA for that title.
  • Check the game’s current rules before using visual effects online.
  • Do not install third-party DLL injectors to bypass NVIDIA restrictions.
  • Be cautious with depth-based or visibility-enhancing effects.
  • Disable filters if the game or publisher treats them as prohibited.

NVIDIA’s supported-game approach is generally less invasive than manually installing ReShade, but it is not a guarantee of compatibility with every anti-cheat update.

NVIDIA filters versus the alternatives

Option Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Native game settings Stability, competitive play, accurate HDR Officially integrated; usually works with menus, UI, and cutscenes May provide fewer visual controls
Windows Auto HDR System-level HDR conversion Built into supported Windows configurations Different from RTX HDR; results vary and HDR layers can conflict
NVIDIA Freestyle Quick per-game color, clarity, and style changes Simple overlay workflow; no separate shader installation Requires supported NVIDIA titles and can be restricted
ReShade Advanced customization and screenshots Large shader and preset ecosystem More complicated; greater compatibility and anti-cheat risk
NVIDIA Control Panel/App profiles Driver-level sharpening, scaling, VSync, and latency controls Per-program settings and useful fallback controls Not a replacement for cinematic or color-grading filters

Use native settings first when they provide the result you want, especially for HDR and competitive games. Use Freestyle for convenient, supported post-processing. Choose ReShade only when you understand the installation and game-policy implications; never use it to bypass NVIDIA or anti-cheat restrictions.

Local games and GeForce NOW are different

The procedure above is for a local Windows game using the NVIDIA App. GeForce NOW is a separate cloud-gaming environment with separate support and shortcuts. NVIDIA documents Freestyle availability for its PC and macOS apps, with Ctrl+G on Windows or Cmd+G on macOS in that context. Do not assume Alt+F3 or local NVIDIA App behavior applies inside a cloud session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can NVIDIA filters work on AMD or Intel graphics cards?

No. Freestyle and the NVIDIA App’s game-filter features are NVIDIA GPU features. A game can run on AMD or Intel hardware without making NVIDIA filters available.

Do NVIDIA filters work with every Steam game?

No. Storefront availability does not determine Freestyle compatibility. The game must be supported by NVIDIA, and support can depend on the executable, rendering path, overlay, driver, and anti-cheat system.

Do NVIDIA filters lower FPS?

They can. Cost varies by filter and game, so compare FPS and 1% lows with filters off and on rather than assuming zero impact.

Can I use NVIDIA filters with HDR?

Yes, where RTX HDR and the game, display, Windows configuration, and driver support it. Test RTX HDR, native HDR, and Auto HDR separately rather than stacking them.

Do filters work in fullscreen mode?

They may work in exclusive full-screen, but borderless windowed mode is a useful troubleshooting test when the overlay or filters fail.

Why does Alt+F3 not work?

The overlay may be disabled, the game may be unsupported, another application may own the shortcut, or the current driver, game, or NVIDIA App build may have a compatibility problem. Try Alt+Z, update the App and driver, and test borderless mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I save a filter profile per game?

NVIDIA has historically saved filter preferences per game, but profiles can be affected by executable changes and driver-update bugs. Relaunch the game and verify the profile after updates.

Are NVIDIA filters allowed in competitive games?

Rules vary by title and can change. Use only effects exposed for the game, check the publisher’s current policy, and avoid third-party injectors or filters intended to create a visibility advantage.

Is Freestyle the same as ReShade?

No. Both apply post-processing effects, but Freestyle is NVIDIA’s supported overlay-based system while ReShade is a separate shader framework with more customization and greater installation and compatibility risks.

Can I use NVIDIA filters with GeForce NOW?

GeForce NOW has separate filter support and overlay behavior. NVIDIA documents different shortcuts for that cloud-gaming context, so do not apply the local NVIDIA App steps without checking current GeForce NOW documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

NVIDIA filters are a convenient way to tune the final image in many supported games: enable the NVIDIA App overlay, try Alt+F3, use Alt+Z as the fallback, add filters sparingly, and verify the result after restarting. The key limitation is compatibility—Freestyle is not a universal solution for every game—and HDR, anti-cheat, overlays, and driver updates can all change the outcome.
