Yes—you can uninstall a Free Play Days game without deleting your progress. On Xbox, close the game normally, remain signed in and online long enough for the latest save to synchronize, then remove only the game installation from My games & apps. Do not use a saved-data command, especially Delete everywhere.
Xbox says game saves are automatically backed up to the Xbox network and that the latest saves synchronize when you next launch a game. Reinstalling later can therefore restore your progress, but Free Play Days access is temporary: after the event, you need a purchase or another active entitlement to launch the title.

The safe answer in one sentence
Finish your session normally, stay signed in and online, choose My games & apps > See all > Games, highlight the Free Play Days title, press the controller’s Menu button, and select Uninstall. That removes installed game files, not your Xbox save. When you regain access to the title, reinstall it, launch it under the same profile, and wait for synchronization to finish before playing.

Xbox presents removal of those two things as separate actions; choosing the installation-removal command is the non-destructive way to free space.

What uninstalling does—and does not—remove
What is removed
- The installed game files on that console.
- The storage space occupied by those files.
- Any locally installed updates or downloadable game files that belong to the installation.
What remains available
- Your save backed up to the Xbox network, provided the latest changes finished synchronizing.
- Your Gamerscore and achievements. The June 4, 2026 Xbox Wire Free Play Days announcement says players who purchase a participating title can continue with their Gamerscore and achievements.
- Your entitlement history. Uninstalling does not turn a temporary Free Play Days offer into a permanent license, nor does it cancel a purchase.
Xbox states that saves are automatically backed up to the Xbox network and that the latest saves remain backed up and automatically synchronize the next time you launch a game. That synchronization is why the safest time to uninstall is after a normal exit while the console is online and you are signed in to the profile that played the game.
Before you remove the game: a short safety check
Use this checklist before opening the uninstall command:
- Exit the game normally. Do not remove the installation while the game is still running or while it is visibly saving.
- Check the profile. Stay signed in to the Xbox account that owns the save. A different profile can have a different save or no save at all.
- Go online. An online connection supports synchronization to the Xbox network. If you have just completed a major section, wait briefly after returning to the dashboard so the save can finish writing and syncing.
- Confirm the title. Free Play Days often lists several games. Highlight the exact game you intend to remove before opening the Menu command.
- Read the confirmation screen. If Xbox offers separate choices for the game and saved data, select only the game-installation option.
If the console is offline, you can still see an uninstall command, but the procedure has not yet given the latest local progress an opportunity to synchronize. Reconnect and sign in first whenever possible.

How to uninstall a Free Play Days game safely
- Close the game. Return to the Xbox dashboard using the game’s normal exit flow. Allow any save operation to complete.
- Keep the console connected. Make sure you are signed in to the profile that played the title and connected to the internet.
- Open the library. Go to My games & apps > See all > Games.
- Select the title. Highlight the Free Play Days game you want to remove. Do not launch it again or select another title by mistake.
- Open the game menu. Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Choose Uninstall. Select the command that removes the installed game. Confirm the removal when Xbox asks.
- Reject saved-data deletion. If the screen shows a command involving saved data, local saves or Delete everywhere, cancel that command. It is not needed to reclaim installation space.
- Wait for completion. Let Xbox finish removing the files before shutting down or beginning another storage operation.
Dashboard wording can change with updates. The labels may not look identical on every console, but the rule does not change: choose the option for the installed game, not the option for saved data.

Uninstall versus saved-data deletion
These actions have different consequences. Use the table as a decision check before confirming a command.

Xbox’s current local-save management path is Settings > System > Storage > Manage local game saves. That area is for viewing, sorting and deleting local saves; it is not required for a normal uninstall. If your goal is simply to free the space used by the game, do not enter that menu.
What happens when the Free Play Days event ends?
Free Play Days access is an entitlement with a time limit, not a permanent ownership license. In the Xbox Wire event announced June 4, 2026, participating games were available from June 4 through June 7, 2026 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. Descenders was offered as a console bonus for all Xbox players. Xbox directed players to install participating games from each title’s Xbox or Microsoft Store detail page.

After the stated window, reinstalling the files alone does not guarantee that the game will launch. You need an entitlement that is still valid, such as a purchase or an active qualifying offer. Xbox also warned that discounts, discount percentages, title availability and regions vary. Check the current Microsoft Store listing for the specific title and your account before beginning a large download.

If you do not plan to buy
You can uninstall and wait. Your synchronized progress remains associated with the account, but you will not be able to continue playing once the temporary offer has expired unless another entitlement covers the title.
If you decide to continue playing
Purchase the title, subject to the current price, region and availability, then reinstall it. The June 4, 2026 announcement says a purchase lets players continue while keeping their Gamerscore and achievements. Launch under the same profile and allow the save synchronization process to complete before continuing.
If the event is still active
You can uninstall to reclaim storage and reinstall later while the offer remains active. The same sign-in and synchronization precautions apply; the temporary entitlement does not remove the need to protect the latest save.

External storage can reduce the pressure that leads to uninstalling, but it is not a backup method for saved data and does not change Free Play Days licensing. The safe-uninstall procedure requires no particular storage accessory.

How to reinstall and recover your progress
- Confirm access first. Open the title’s current Xbox or Microsoft Store page and verify that the Free Play Days offer, a qualifying membership, or your purchase provides access in your region.
- Install the game. Start the download from the title’s store page or from the library entry associated with your entitlement.
- Use the original profile. Sign in to the Xbox account that created the save. Switching profiles can make a correct save appear to be missing.
- Launch while connected. Start the game online so Xbox can check the entitlement and retrieve the synchronized save.
- Wait for synchronization. If Xbox displays a save-sync prompt or progress indicator, let it finish. Do not force-quit the game during this step.
- Verify the expected checkpoint. Once the title reaches its normal menu, check that your latest campaign or other progress is present before switching to offline play.
A reinstall restores the installation files; it does not restore access to an expired event by itself. Entitlement and saved-data synchronization are separate checks that both need to succeed.

The game starts without my latest progress
- Stop before creating a new save that could make the situation harder to diagnose.
- Confirm that you are using the original Xbox profile.
- Reconnect to the internet and relaunch so synchronization can complete.
- Check whether you previously chose a local-save deletion command. The normal uninstall path does not require that menu.
If the latest session was played offline and never synchronized, the Xbox network may not contain that newest progress. This is why closing normally and going online before uninstalling matters.
There is no sync prompt
Do not assume that the absence of a visible prompt means a problem. Xbox may complete synchronization without presenting a long dialog. Leave the console online, launch the title under the correct profile, and check the in-game progress only after the title reaches its normal menu.

Check the date of the Free Play Days offer and your current entitlement. The June 4–7, 2026 event was time-limited, and Xbox notes that participating titles and discounts vary by region. A successful download does not itself prove that the temporary license is still active. Purchase the title or use another qualifying entitlement if you want to continue after the event.

I selected a saved-data command by mistake
Stop and do not delete anything else. The command Delete everywhere is specifically different from uninstalling the game and can remove the synchronized save. If you selected only a local-save removal command, the outcome depends on whether a synchronized copy remains; relaunching online may restore that copy. If you confirmed Delete everywhere, an ordinary reinstall should not be treated as a recovery method.
The console says there is not enough space
Remove the game installation through My games & apps rather than touching saved data. If you want to avoid repeated installs, consider compatible external storage, but verify the accessory requirements separately. Storage capacity has no effect on whether a save is synchronized.
Questions to answer before pressing Confirm
- Am I removing only the installation? The command should say Uninstall or otherwise refer to the game files.
- Did I close the game normally? A clean exit gives the title time to write its latest save.
- Was I online and signed in to the correct profile? This supports the Xbox-network backup described by Xbox.
- Will I still have an entitlement later? Free Play Days access can expire even though the saved progress remains.
- Do I know what I will do next? If you plan to continue, verify purchase or membership access before reinstalling; if you are waiting, keep the profile and title association unchanged.
The practical rule
Use Uninstall to remove a Free Play Days game from storage; use saved-data management only when you intentionally want to alter saves. Xbox says synchronized saves remain on the Xbox network and automatically sync at the next launch. Protect that process by exiting normally, staying online and signed in, avoiding Delete everywhere, and checking your entitlement before you reinstall after the event.
