What uninstalling PunkBuster actually involves
PunkBuster is an anti-cheat component installed for particular PC games. Removing a game does not guarantee that the shared PunkBuster Services entry, its service files, or game-specific PB data are removed. That is why you can still see PunkBuster in Windows after deleting a game.

There are three separate cleanup targets:
- The game itself, removed through its launcher or Windows’ app controls.
- The Windows service, listed as PunkBuster Services when it is registered with Windows.
- Game-specific files, commonly a
PBfolder in the game directory or a folder underAppData\LocalPunkBuster.
Remove only what you no longer need. If another installed game still uses PunkBuster multiplayer, deleting the service or its shared components can prevent that game from starting its anti-cheat checks.

Before you start
- Close every game, launcher, updater, and game-related process.
- Decide whether you still play another installed PunkBuster-protected game. If you do, remove only the unwanted game’s files and leave the service installed unless that other game provides its own replacement.
- Use an administrator account or be ready to approve the Windows administrator prompt.
- Note the game’s installation directory. You may need it later to inspect its
PBfolder.
Launcher names and menu labels differ between games and Windows releases, so there is no single universal uninstall path for the game itself.

Method 1: uninstall PunkBuster Services from Windows
Use this route when PunkBuster Services appears in Windows’ installed-program list.
- Uninstall the game from the launcher if you no longer need it. If the launcher has separate entries for the game and its anti-cheat component, remove the game first.
- Open the Windows search box, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features. In older Classic View layouts, this may be called Add/Remove Programs.
- Find PunkBuster Services in the installed-program list.
- Select it, choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change, and follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows if the wizard asks you to do so.
On newer Windows releases, you can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the exact label varies by release), search for PunkBuster Services, open its menu, and choose Uninstall. The Control Panel route remains useful when the modern list does not display the entry.
Method 2: use PBSVC.EXE when the service is not listed
PBSVC.EXE is the documented PunkBuster Services removal utility. Use the copy supplied with the game, or download the executable from Even Balance at https://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe. If your browser saves it rather than opening it, locate it in the browser’s Downloads folder.

- Close the game and its launcher.
- Locate
PBSVC.EXE. It may be in the game’s installer or support directory, or in the location where you downloaded it. - Double-click the file. If Windows displays a security or administrator prompt, verify that you intended to run the file and approve it with an administrator account.
- In the PunkBuster Services utility, select Uninstall PunkBuster Services.
- Let the utility complete. Do not launch the game while it is working.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
This method is the appropriate fallback when PunkBuster Services is absent from Programs and Features, when the normal uninstall entry fails, or when the game was already removed. The executable removes the PunkBuster service; it does not substitute for uninstalling the game through its own launcher.
Method 3: inspect leftover game-specific files
Only inspect these locations after the game and PunkBuster service are no longer in use. Do not delete unrelated folders merely because they contain “PB” in their names.
Check the game installation directory
- Open the game’s installation folder in File Explorer.
- Look for a folder named
PB. - If you have already uninstalled the game and the folder belongs exclusively to that game, delete the leftover
PBfolder.
Do not remove a PB folder if you are uncertain which game owns it or if another installed title points to the same location.

Check the per-user PunkBuster folder
On Windows Vista and later directory layouts, game-specific PunkBuster files may remain under:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalPunkBuster<game>
- Press
Windows key + R, enter%LOCALAPPDATA%, and press Enter. - Open the
PunkBusterfolder. - Identify the subfolder matching the game you removed.
- Delete only that game-specific subfolder, and leave folders belonging to games you still play.
AppData is hidden by default in many File Explorer views, which is why entering %LOCALAPPDATA% is usually easier than browsing from C:Users.
Which removal method should you use?

What to do when PunkBuster is still visible
The game is gone, but “PunkBuster Services” remains
That is the documented situation in which the game uninstall has not removed the service. Run PBSVC.EXE as an administrator and choose Uninstall PunkBuster Services. Restart Windows, then check Programs and Features again.

The service is not listed, but PunkBuster files remain
Use the game’s installation directory and the per-user path under AppDataLocalPunkBuster to identify leftovers. Remove only folders tied to the uninstalled game. A file remaining on disk is not, by itself, proof that the Windows service is still installed.
PBSVC.EXE will not start
- Confirm that you downloaded the executable from the Even Balance URL above or are using the copy supplied with the game.
- Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator, then approve the prompt.
- Close all games and launchers before trying again.
- If Windows blocks the file with a security warning, use the file’s Properties dialog to review the warning and only continue if you recognize the source and intended to download it.
The uninstall wizard reports that files are in use
Exit the game, launcher, and any updater, then restart Windows and run the uninstaller before opening the launcher again. If the problem persists, use PBSVC.EXE instead of repeatedly attempting the same Programs and Features entry.

Another game stops working afterward
You may have removed PunkBuster components still required by that title. Reinstall or repair PunkBuster from that game’s own installer or support files, following the game publisher’s instructions. Do not copy files from an unrelated game’s directory.
How to verify that removal is complete
- Restart Windows if you have not already done so.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features and confirm that PunkBuster Services no longer appears. Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps if your Windows release maintains a separate list.
- With the removed game closed and uninstalled, inspect its installation directory for a remaining
PBfolder. - Check
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalPunkBuster<game>and remove only the matching game folder if it is still present. - Do not judge success solely by the presence of a filename. The key checks are the installed-program entry, the service-removal result, and whether game-specific folders remain.
Important limits and safety points
- There is no universal launcher path: Steam-like launchers, publisher launchers, and older installers use different labels.
- The Windows wording also changes by release; Programs and Features, Add/Remove Programs, and Installed apps can refer to the same general task.
- Removing PunkBuster is not the same as uninstalling every game that once used it.
- Do not delete the entire
AppDataLocalPunkBusterdirectory when you still play another protected game. - Keep the service if another installed game still needs it; remove it only when you no longer require PunkBuster multiplayer on that PC.
Bottom line
Uninstall the game first, remove PunkBuster Services through Windows when it is listed, and use PBSVC.EXE when it is not. After a restart, clean only the removed game’s PB and per-user PunkBuster folders. This sequence addresses the common case in which PunkBuster remains after the game itself has been deleted without risking files used by another installed game.
