To remove a Steam game you installed for a free weekend, open Library, right-click the game, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm. Uninstall the game from your Steam Library
This removes the selected game’s installed files from its Steam library. It does not remove the Steam client or automatically erase every file the game may have created elsewhere.

- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Choose the drive or Steam library that held the game.
- Look for the game in the installed-games list. If it is no longer listed as installed, Steam has removed its installation from that library.
The amount of space returned depends on that game’s installation and on files stored elsewhere. Do not expect a universal number: updates, downloadable or custom content, saved games, and other data can change the amount of disk space associated with a title. If the free-space figure has not changed as expected, use the troubleshooting checks below before deleting folders manually.
Check every Steam library before assuming the space is gone
Steam can use more than one library folder, and those libraries can be on different drives. In Settings > Storage, select each listed drive or library and review its installed-games list. This helps distinguish an uninstalled copy from a second installation that still occupies another location. It also shows where Steam considers the title to be installed, which is more reliable than searching only the default library folder.
If you installed the game on a secondary internal drive, removing it from a different library will not affect that copy. Likewise, a library entry can remain in your account even after every local installation has been removed. Use the storage view to check installation status, and use your operating system’s free-space display only as a broad confirmation rather than as proof that a particular folder is safe to delete.

Uninstalling is appropriate when you do not need the installed files now. If you want to keep the game ready to play but need space on one particular drive, moving it to another Steam library is the safer alternative.

Move an installed game to another Steam library
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the storage view to select the library containing the game.
- Select the game and choose Steam’s option to move it to another library folder.
- Choose the destination library and confirm the transfer.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then check the storage view for the new location.
Moving changes which library uses the space; it does not reduce the game’s total installed size. Steam cautions against using an external hard drive for Steam and its games because connection and performance problems can affect play. A second internal drive or another consistently available library location is a more dependable destination.
Moving is also useful when the free-weekend period has ended but you expect to play again soon. You avoid a second download, while the original files remain available in the destination library. Make sure that destination has sufficient capacity and is normally connected before treating the move as complete.
Do a save check before clicking Uninstall
If progress matters, pause before removing the installation. Confirm whether the game advertises Steam Cloud on its store page, check for any pending synchronization, and identify whether you use mods, custom configurations, screenshots, or profiles. These categories can be stored separately from the main installation and may not be included in a cloud transfer.

This check is especially important after a short free weekend because you may not remember where the game stored its profile. A few minutes spent locating and copying the relevant folder is reversible; deleting an unidentified folder is not. Keep the backup until you have successfully installed the game again and confirmed that the expected save or profile loads.
Protect saves before removing leftover folders
Uninstalling the game through Steam removes the installed game content, but save handling is game-specific. Do not assume that every save is deleted, and do not assume that every save is safely backed up.
Check Steam Cloud support
Steam Cloud can synchronize saves and other user data, but the game’s developer decides which files are included. A game may have no Steam Cloud support, or it may synchronize only selected files. Check the game’s Steam store page and the developer’s support information before treating the cloud copy as your only backup.
If the game supports Steam Cloud, allow Steam to finish any pending synchronization before uninstalling. A cloud icon or a completed synchronization message is useful evidence that Steam has finished its transfer, but it does not prove that every profile, configuration, mod, or custom file is included.
Find local saves on Windows
Steam Support identifies DocumentsMy Games as a common location for third-party games’ non-cloud saves and profiles on Windows. The exact folder is chosen by each developer, so a game may use a different path. Search for the game’s name in your user folders and consult the developer’s instructions before moving or deleting anything.
For a manual backup, copy the relevant save or profile folder to a separate location, such as another internal drive or removable backup media. Preserve the folder structure and keep the backup until you have successfully restored or tested the save after a future installation. Do not delete a folder merely because it is outside the Steam library; it may contain the only local copy of your progress.
Keep saves separate from game installation files
Game files inside the Steam library can be replaced by a later installation. Local saves outside that library may survive an uninstall, but survival is not guaranteed if you remove those folders yourself or use a broader cleanup operation. Treat saves, settings, screenshots, mods, and custom content as separate categories and decide which ones you want to retain before cleaning up.

What uninstalling removes—and what can remain
The Manage > Uninstall command targets the game installation registered in that Steam library. It is not a promise that every game-related byte on every drive disappears.

- Installed game content: The main files in the selected Steam library are removed.
- Steam Cloud data: Cloud-synchronized data is governed by the game’s Steam Cloud configuration and is not the same as deleting a local folder.

- Check synchronization. Review the game’s Steam Cloud support and wait for any pending sync to complete.
- Back up local data. Copy saves or profiles from their documented location, including any applicable folder under

The game remains in the Library
A Library listing can remain after uninstalling because it represents your account’s game library, not only currently installed software. Check Settings > Storage to determine whether the title is installed. If it is absent from the installed list, do not reinstall it just to remove the listing.

Confirm that you checked the library and drive where the game was installed. Steam can use multiple library folders, so a similarly named installation on another drive may be the one still consuming space. Review each library shown in Settings > Storage rather than inspecting only the default location.
The drive gained less space than expected
Installation size varies by title. Remaining saves, custom content, updates, or files stored outside the Steam library can account for the difference. Identify those categories first; do not infer that Steam failed simply because the recovered amount does not match a store-page download size or a remembered figure.

You cannot find a save after reinstalling
Check whether the game supports Steam Cloud and whether the missing file was one of the files the developer configured for synchronization. If the game did not use Cloud, restore the local backup to the location specified by the developer. A generic path is not guaranteed to work because developers choose their own save locations.
You are unsure whether a folder is safe to delete
Leave it in place until you can identify it from the game’s documentation or developer support. A folder outside the Steam installation can contain a local save, profile, or custom content rather than disposable installation data.
Do not confuse uninstalling a game with uninstalling Steam
The procedure above removes one game. Removing the Steam client is a different operation with a broader effect. Steam warns that uninstalling the client removes installed game content unless you move the steamapps folder elsewhere first.
If your intention is only to clear a free-weekend game, do not uninstall Steam. Use the individual game’s Manage > Uninstall command. If you are intentionally removing the client and want to preserve installed files for a future Steam installation, follow Steam’s guidance to move steamapps before removing the client, and keep your save backup separately because the steamapps folder is not a universal save backup.
Reinstalling the game later
After an uninstall, the game can remain associated with your Steam account and can be installed again when you choose. A future installation downloads the game files again; uninstalling does not create a smaller reusable installer. Before reinstalling, decide whether you will restore a local save or rely on the game’s Steam Cloud synchronization.
If you moved the game rather than uninstalling it, Steam should use the destination library recorded in the Storage settings. If the destination drive is unavailable, the game may not be playable until that library is connected and accessible. Keeping a library on a drive that is reliably available avoids confusing a moved installation with a missing one.
Practical decision checklist
- Need the drive space and do not need the installed files: uninstall through Manage > Uninstall.
- Need the game ready to play and have another suitable library: move it through Settings > Storage.
- Care about progress: verify Steam Cloud support and back up local saves before deleting folders.
- Want to know whether removal worked: check the installed-games list in Settings > Storage.
- Still see files: identify saves, updates, or custom content before removing anything.
- Removing Steam itself: treat
steamappspreservation as a separate procedure.
The safest approach after a free weekend is therefore selective: remove the game installation from Steam, verify the correct library, and preserve any local data whose location or synchronization status is not certain.
