To unlock a costume in Mario Kart World, drive through a Yoshi’s food stop or collect Dash Food while playing as the character whose outfit you want. Consume the food, then check that character’s selection screen for the new outfit. The process uses in-game food; the sources available do not establish an amiibo or subscription requirement.
How costume unlocking works
Nintendo says Yoshi’s drive-throughs offer Dash Food. Taking an order gives you a speed boost and can sometimes unlock an outfit that you can select from the character screen. The key is to use the character connected to the outfit you want: a food pickup is not a universal unlock for every character.

Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, released June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo. Nintendo Life’s guide, updated September 17, 2026, counts 127 costumes including default outfits. Nintendo Wire reports 103 unique costumes across 24 costumed main characters; that figure excludes the 24 defaults.
How to unlock an outfit
- Choose the target character. Select the character whose costume you want before collecting food.
- Find Dash Food. Visit a Yoshi’s food stop or look for Dash Food on a course or in Free Roam. A guide describes pickups as small bags and lists food associated with particular courses and regions.
- Consume the food as that character. Check a food-and-character pairing for the outfit you’re pursuing; different foods can work for different characters.
- Check the character-selection screen. If the food unlocks the outfit, it will be available to select there.
- Try another listed pairing if needed. The available food-location guide says its list is not exhaustive, so a missing result does not prove an outfit cannot be unlocked with other food or locations.
Which food unlocks this outfit, and where can I get it?
The detailed pairings below are examples reported by Nintendo Life, not an official Nintendo master list. Use them as route clues, and make sure you are playing as the named character when you collect the food.

| Yoshi — Aristocrat | Popcorn | Boo Cinema |
Nintendo Life also identifies burgers, takoyaki, pizza, cakes, pancakes, popcorn, fruit, and meat as food categories that can unlock outfits for multiple characters. The exact result depends on the character and location, so treat the food as a lead rather than assuming it unlocks the same outfit for everyone.
How many costumes are there?
Nintendo Life reports 127 costumes total when default outfits are included. Nintendo Wire’s count of 103 unique costumes is consistent with excluding the default outfit for each of the 24 characters who have costumes.

The number of alternate outfits differs by character: Nintendo Life lists nine for Mario, eight each for Luigi and Peach, and one for Donkey Kong. Use the character-specific list to plan for a particular outfit; there is no single food route that unlocks every costume at once.
Why didn’t the food unlock the costume?
- You were using a different character. Food and character pairings matter. Return with the character whose outfit you want.
- The food or location was not the right pairing. Compare the pickup with a documented food-and-location example for that character and try another one.
- You expected the list to cover every possible route. Nintendo Life cautions that its list is not completely comprehensive, and foods may work with different characters in different ways.
- You are looking for an amiibo unlock. The available evidence does not show that amiibo unlock Mario Kart World costumes. Do not assume the amiibo suit mechanics from Mario Kart 8 apply here.
Does the game version affect costume unlocks?
Nintendo Support lists version 1.8.0, released September 9, 2026, and says players need the same software version to play together. That update page does not say that costume unlocking changed. If an outfit behaves differently from a listed pairing, check the current in-game result rather than assuming the update altered the mechanic.
