There is no single reliable outfit total without specifying the game version and what the count includes. This guide explains the confirmed unlock systems, points out update and paid-content distinctions, and notes content that was not yet available on the research date.

How Nano Suit unlocks work
Most regular Nano Suits start with a Design Pattern found in a level or acquired through another route. Finding a pattern does not necessarily unlock the suit immediately: craft it through the game’s crafting system. Other outfits are granted as quest or collection rewards, sold by in-game retailers, or tied to later content such as New Game+ and Boss Challenge.

Find Design Patterns and craft the suits
Exploration is a major part of collecting Nano Suits. Search level locations for Design Patterns, and check each suit’s progression gate before attempting to reach it. Once you have a pattern, craft the suit; collecting the recipe and completing the craft are separate steps.

For a specific suit, use an up-to-date item-by-item location index and verify its region, access requirements, and whether it requires crafting. The available location index used for this guide dates to June 2025, so check for later changes before treating it as exhaustive.
Check retailers and quest rewards
Some Nano Suits or their patterns are sold by in-game retailers. Shop availability can depend on progression or affinity, so return to shops as you advance rather than assuming an early visit showed the full inventory. This is an in-game purchase route, distinct from paid DLC or edition bonuses.
Other suits come from quests or collection milestones. For example, the Black Pearl Nano Suit requires collecting all 49 cans, according to the June 2025 guide. Check the individual requirement for any collection reward rather than assuming partial completion is enough.
Complete photo requests in Xion
A set of Photo Mode requests begins at the Bulletin Board in Xion. The first request asks you to photograph the globe in Xion; later requests direct you to find and photograph graffiti around the maps. Follow the request instructions to progress this update-specific content.
- Check the Bulletin Board in Xion for photo requests.
- Read the current request and locate the named subject.
- Use Photo Mode to photograph it, then return to the request board and follow any subsequent instructions.
New Game+ outfits and variants
New Game+ is important for outfit completion. Shift Up advises players to revisit costume chests and shops and replay quests to obtain costumes they missed. New Game+ also introduced additional outfits and variants; do not assume every suit is available in a first playthrough.

In its 2024 New Game+ announcement, PlayStation.Blog reported 34 new outfits for Eve, along with additional cosmetics for Adam, Lily, and the Drone. That is a release-context figure, not a current total for all costumes. When replaying, check earlier locations and shops as well as quest rewards.
Boss Challenge and update-specific content
The June 2025 update added Nano Suits and other content. PlayStation announced the Royal Guard Suit as a reward for defeating Mann in Boss Challenge. The update also included Crimson Wing as a free outfit.
Some editions and crossover outfits have additional access requirements. The outfit index flags NieR:Automata and NIKKE entries as DLC-dependent and identifies edition content. Check the specific item’s prerequisite before following an in-game route; a paid-content requirement is not the same as an in-game shop purchase.

Counts vary by date and scope, so do not treat launch-era figures as current totals. PowerPyx counted 40 Nano Suits in an April 2024 launch-era guide, while Push Square reported more than 100 outfits in June 2025. PlayStation separately announced 25 new Nano Suits with the June 2025 PC and Complete Edition update. These figures describe different snapshots or scopes and should not be added together.
PlatinumGames announced four Bayonetta collaboration costumes for November 5, 2026. As of the research date, October 7, 2026, these were upcoming, and the announcement did not establish their unlock steps.
