Gooigi is a story unlock in Luigi’s Mansion 3: you must receive him from Professor E. Gadd before you can start Story Mode co-op. Nintendo estimates the unlock takes about an hour of gameplay. Afterward, use the in-game Co-op menu to set up controllers; Player 2 joins as Gooigi.
How do I unlock Gooigi?
Continue through Story Mode until Professor E. Gadd gives Luigi Gooigi. Nintendo Support estimates this happens after about one hour of gameplay, while Nintendo’s beginner guide places Gooigi’s introduction at the Virtual Boo on the first basement level. The hour is an estimate, not a guaranteed timer, and Nintendo’s guides do not provide a complete mission-by-mission route to the unlock.
Once you have Gooigi, you can summon him in solo play by pressing down on the right stick; press it again to switch between Luigi and Gooigi. Nintendo describes Gooigi as able to pass through tight spaces and walk over spikes, but he is vulnerable to water. Nintendo’s beginner guide explains his introduction and abilities.
How do I start two-player Story Mode co-op?
- In Story Mode, press the + Button to open the game menu.
- Select Co-op, then select Co-op again.
- Choose the controller setup for each player:
- One Joy-Con per player: Hold each Joy-Con horizontally and press SL and SR.
- A Joy-Con pair: Hold the controllers vertically and press L and R.
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: Press L and R.
- Player 1 confirms the controller setup using the on-screen prompt.
- Back out of the menu, usually by pressing − or B.
- Player 2 presses any button to join as Gooigi.
To end co-op and return to solo play, Player 1 opens the menu and selects Solo. These are Nintendo Support’s instructions for adding a friend to the current Story Mode file: Nintendo Support: How to Start a Multiplayer Game.

What kind of multiplayer does this setup provide?
Story Mode co-op is local two-player play on one system: Player 1 controls Luigi and Player 2 controls Gooigi. Nintendo’s setup instructions do not describe a second console or an online session for this mode. You do not need Nintendo Switch Online for this local setup; Nintendo says membership is required for online features.
The other multiplayer modes work differently:

Can you play co-op on Nintendo Switch Lite?
Yes, but Nintendo says detached Joy-Con controllers are required for co-op on Switch Lite. The system’s built-in controls do not detach, so arrange compatible detached controllers before starting. On a standard Nintendo Switch, use compatible Joy-Con controllers or Pro Controllers; there is no need to buy another controller if you already have a supported setup.
