How tonic recipe discovery works
Start the Revenant storyline and follow its onboarding to Eido’s Tonic Table in the Last City. At the table, brew Uncommon tonics to discover Rare recipes, then brew Rare tonics to discover Legendary recipes. Bungie describes this tier-by-tier progression in its October 17, 2024 tonic guide.

Recipes are organized by tonic category. To work toward another recipe in a category, craft tonics from that category rather than expecting one type of tonic to unlock every recipe. A 2024 GameSpot guide observed that it could take about five crafts to unlock a higher tier; treat that as a guide’s estimate, not a guaranteed craft count or a universal threshold.
How Fieldwork fits into recipe progression
Discovering formulas advances Eido’s Fieldwork. Minor Fieldwork supplies reagents and opens access to Major Fieldwork; Major Fieldwork grants upgrades to the tonic system. After all Major Fieldwork is complete, Eido offers Key Fieldwork, which recovers a device that permanently extends tonic duration, according to Bungie’s Act I explainer.

- When Eido offers Minor Fieldwork, complete it for reagents and progression toward Major Fieldwork.
- Complete available Major Fieldwork to earn tonic-system upgrades.
- After finishing all Major Fieldwork, take on Key Fieldwork for its duration-extending device.
The practical loop is to brew, discover, complete Fieldwork, and use the resulting upgrades to support further brewing. Fieldwork is not a substitute for crafting: recipe discovery starts with making tonics.
Choose what to brew based on your goal
Volatile tonics for combat effects
Volatile tonics provide combat effects. Bungie says Legendary Volatile tonics combine effects, so they are the progression path to consider when you want combat-focused benefits.
Enriching tonics for loot
Enriching tonics improve the chance of earning more specific loot. Legendary Enriching tonics improve specific-loot targeting, making them the more relevant category when your goal is a particular reward.
Compare rarity and the in-game effect
Rarity matters both for recipe discovery and the tonic’s effect. Before spending ingredients, read the tonic’s description in the game and decide whether its category, effect, duration, or targeted reward fits what you plan to do. Shacknews reported 20-minute durations for Uncommon, 40 minutes for Rare, and 60 minutes for Legendary Volatile tonics in its October 9, 2024 guide; check the current in-game details rather than treating those dated figures as a complete or current duration list.
Where to find tonic reagents
Check the Tonic Capsule in your inventory for reagent sources, and follow the activity or feed guidance shown in-game. Bungie notes that some ingredients come from general play while rarer materials are tied to particular activities. Completing available Minor Fieldwork is also a direct way to earn reagents while advancing progression.
For Act I, contemporary guides pointed players to Onslaught: Salvation reward chests as a reagent source. That is dated activity advice, not confirmation that the same source is the best or only option now; use the current Capsule hints to guide your farming.

Account for Act II recipes and Fieldwork
The original Act I recipe progression is not the whole Revenant tonic system. Bungie’s November 21, 2024 Act II update confirms that Act II added tonics and Fieldwork, including Tonic of Tomb Gear, Tonic of Brawling, and Tonic of Enhancement Cores. The Enhancement Core tonic is unlocked through the new Key Fieldwork quest.
Accordingly, “all tonics” means continuing through the additions tied to multiple acts, not stopping once the original Act I recipes are discovered. The available sources establish these examples and the progression method, but not a verified, exhaustive recipe count for the complete live catalog as of October 8, 2026.
