In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, unlock the five Risen Elder Dragon quests by reaching their individual Master Rank (MR) thresholds: MR 110 through MR 180. Anomaly Investigations offer a separate way to encounter some Risen monsters, but their Anomaly Research progression is not the same as unlocking the MR quests.
Risen monster MR unlock requirements
The quest thresholds are separate milestones, not a single unlock at MR 180. The complete sequence below is reported by a secondary Risen Elder Dragons guide; Capcom independently confirms the MR 160 and MR 180 requirements.

Capcom states that Risen Shagaru Magala awaits hunters who have reached MR 180. Its announcements also identify MR 160 as the requirement for Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax. The earlier exact thresholds in the list are guide-reported rather than enumerated together in the cited Capcom announcements.
Can Anomaly Investigations let you fight them sooner?
Potentially. A secondary Risen Elder Dragons guide reports that Risen Chameleos, Risen Kushala Daora, and Risen Teostra can appear as Anomaly Investigation targets from Anomaly Research Level (AR) 111; Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax and Risen Shagaru Magala can appear from AR 131. These are reported Investigation encounter thresholds, not replacements for the MR quest unlocks above.

- Journey to the West - In addition to the plethora of new hunts to complete, the immersive story will task Kamura’s valiant hunters with researching the secrets behind the puzzling anomalies plaguing the distant Kingdom. This pursuit will take players on a journey across the sea to a new base of operations called Elgado Outpost, where they will investigate powerful creatures known as the Three Lords, each inspired by staples of Western horror.
- New and Returning Monsters - The game will introduce Malzeno, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the lupine Fanged Wyvern Lunagaron, the towering Garangolm, and new subspecies such as Blood Orange Bishaten. Hunters will also encounter numerous fan-favorite and returning species from previous Monster Hunter games including the voltaic Astalos.
- Combat Evolved - The “Wirebug” mechanic that allows for unparalleled freedom of movement and mobility returns! Hunters using the new facilities at Elgado Outpost will also be able to master all-new combat options and Wirebug techniques for all weapon types. More information on these new abilities will be shared in the future.
- New Locales - Featuring all-new maps with no loading times such as the newly revealed Citadel locale, the continuous gameplay ensures that players will remain on their quests as soon as the hunt begins, without transitions between areas.
- Hunting Options - Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in online co-op play on Nintendo Switch or PC. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone via a local connection!
Anomaly Research is a separate Sunbreak progression system. Capcom’s official manual explains that Anomaly Investigations award Research Points and that raising Anomaly Research Level opens harder monsters, quests, and other Anomaly-related content. - For the standard Risen Elder Dragon quest, raise Master Rank to the threshold listed for that monster.
- If your goal is an Anomaly Investigation encounter, progress Anomaly Research instead; the guide-reported AR 111 and AR 131 thresholds apply to that alternate route.
Both progression systems belong to Sunbreak. Capcom’s Free Title Update 5 announcement gives the MR 180 Shagaru Magala gate, and its Title Update 4 announcement confirms the MR 160 Valstrax requirement.
