“Seasonal upgrades” in Destiny 2: Echoes can mean two different things: Artifact perks, which you earn through XP and challenges, or access to Echoes episode content and Failsafe. Artifact perks do not use the Failsafe quest path. To reach Failsafe, Bungie forum guidance says to complete Na-Veskirisk on Europa, then start Mission: Meteoric on Nessus and follow the Act 1 introduction.
First, identify which upgrade you mean
Echoes has separate progression systems rather than one shared upgrade tree. The Artifact grants combat perks; the Echoes introduction opens episode content and Failsafe. Bungie’s 2024 overview describes the Artifact and Season Pass structure, while later access troubleshooting comes from Bungie Help forum replies.

How to unlock Echoes and reach Failsafe
- Complete Na-Veskirisk on Europa. If Echoes progression is missing, check whether this mission is available and finish it. Bungie Help forum replies from 2025 report it as a gate before Echoes access in the circumstances they describe: “Can I still unlock Last City Failsafe?” and “H.E.L.M Issue.”
- Go to Nessus and start Mission: Meteoric. Follow the Echoes Act 1 introductory quest sequence to reach Failsafe, as described in the March 2025 forum response.
- If progression stops after the introduction, check access ownership. The 2025 forum replies say an Echoes entitlement was required for further Acts and Failsafe vendor rewards; one names The Final Shape Annual Pass edition as a way to obtain it at that time. That is historical guidance, not confirmation of what is available to buy in 2026. Current Echoes availability and the edition or platform-store route that grants access are not established here; check the current Bungie and platform store listings before purchasing.
How Artifact perks and Act additions worked
For Artifact perks, earn XP and complete challenges. Bungie’s June 10, 2024 Episode: Echoes overview said the Artifact was available early in The Final Shape campaign and would gain new possibilities as the Episode developed.
The same announcement laid out the original 2024 plan: Echoes had three Acts, each about six weeks long; Act 2 and Act 3 were each to add an Artifact row with five perks, while each Act release added 50 Season Pass ranks, for 200 total. Those figures describe the launch-era design, not a guarantee that the same progression is currently available in 2026.

If an Echoes research objective is missing
For the specific NES003 research objective, a July 2024 community reply on Bungie Help Forums says to check the top row of Failsafe’s upgrades for a dimmed tracking item, enter Breach Executable, and follow the proximity sensor to an object: “Season Episode Echoes Act II Quest:NES003.” Treat this as community troubleshooting, not an official documented quest step.
Breach Executable itself is a three-player activity for acquiring Vex technology and rewards, according to Bungie’s 2024 overview. It is not a physical item or a general-purpose key for unlocking seasonal upgrades; the sensor route applies to the specific reported objective.
