To unlock all of The Forsaken Hollows in Elden Ring Nightreign, first defeat Tricephalos, then speak with the Iron Menial in Roundtable Hold to unlock the Scholar and Undertaker. To reach the Balancers expedition and the Great Hollows Shifting Earth event, you must also defeat one more main-game boss and make both new Nightfarers playable. Buying or downloading the DLC alone does not bypass these in-game requirements.
Unlock the Nightfarers first
- Defeat Tricephalos. This opens the route to the DLC’s two new Nightfarers.
- Return to Roundtable Hold and speak with the Iron Menial. The Iron Menial has a message from the Small Jar Merchant. Follow that interaction to unlock the steps that make Scholar and Undertaker playable.
Bandai Namco’s official unlock guide distinguishes this Nightfarer unlock from access to the DLC’s new boss content: defeating Tricephalos alone is not enough for the Balancers or the Great Hollows.
Meet the extra requirements for Balancers and the Great Hollows
- Defeat one additional main-game boss after Tricephalos. The requirement is at least two main-game boss defeats in total.
- Make both Scholar and Undertaker playable.
- Go to the chapel behind the Small Jar Merchant. Once the requirements are met, you can challenge the Balancers boss expedition and the “The Great Hollows” Shifting Earth event.
Check the DLC installation separately from progression
The base game is required to play The Forsaken Hollows. FromSoftware lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam as supported platforms in its DLC announcement. If the DLC does not appear, check both your platform’s ownership or library listing and whether the add-on has actually been installed.
| Platform | What to check |
|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5 | Some editions and pre-orders that included the DLC still require a manual download. Search the PlayStation Store for “nightreign” and select “ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN The Forsaken Hollows PS4 & PS5,” as described in Bandai Namco Europe’s platform instructions. |
| Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | If the DLC came with an edition or pre-order, find the add-on under the game’s add-ons or owned titles, then select and install it, according to Bandai Namco’s guide. |
| Steam | Confirm the DLC is owned and listed for the game in your Steam library, and check that the game is updated. Bandai Namco’s launch guide mentioned Update File 1.03 and a December 4, 2025 download time; those were launch-era details, not confirmation of the latest patch version. See the guide. |
Bandai Namco’s December 4, 2025 availability announcement also notes that players whose pre-order or Deluxe Edition included the DLC may need to add it manually to their library. A missing in-game unlock can therefore have two separate causes: the add-on is not installed, or the required game progression is incomplete.

Why DLC content may appear in Deep of Night
After a post-release update, the DLC’s Shifting Earth, raid events, and bases can appear in Deep of Night, including during base-game expeditions. Bandai Namco says DLC-exclusive content appears there only when matchmaking with three other players who own the DLC. That Deep of Night condition is separate from the Roundtable Hold unlock sequence.
