Unlocking the Merchant’s Tale dungeons in Final Fantasy XIV takes you through three duties: The Merchant’s Tale (Variant), The Merchant’s Tale (Advanced), and Another Merchant’s Tale (Criterion). The Advanced duty is the required step between Variant and Criterion; Another Merchant’s Tale is not another name for Advanced.
Unlock The Merchant’s Tale (Variant)
- Complete the Endwalker main scenario quest.
- Speak with Osmon in Old Sharlayan at X:11.9, Y:13.3.
- Accept “A Spellbinding Read” from Shallow Moor in Old Sharlayan at X:12.0, Y:13.3, then complete the quest.
- Open Duty, go to the V&C Dungeon Finder, and register for The Merchant’s Tale. To enter solo or with a premade group, leave “Enable party matching” unchecked; check it to use matchmaking.
The quest and duty require a level-90 Disciple of War or Magic. There is no minimum item level, and the duty syncs item level to 765. You can enter solo or with up to three other players, without party-role restrictions.

Unlock The Merchant’s Tale (Advanced)
- Complete “A Spellbinding Read” and reach level 100.
- In The Merchant’s Tale (Variant), defeat the three unique bosses found at the ends of different routes. You need to defeat each boss; repeating a route that ends with a boss you have already beaten will not complete this requirement.
- Speak with Memolivia in Old Sharlayan at X:11.9, Y:13.3 to unlock Advanced.
- Open Duty, select the Advanced/Criterion tab of the V&C Dungeon Finder, and register for The Merchant’s Tale (Advanced).
Advanced requires average item level 760 and syncs item level to 785. It supports one to four players, with no party-role restrictions. Its three stronger bosses can be fought in any order.
Unlock Another Merchant’s Tale (Criterion)
- Clear all bosses in The Merchant’s Tale (Advanced).
- Speak with Osmon in Old Sharlayan at X:11.9, Y:13.3.
- Register for Another Merchant’s Tale in the Advanced/Criterion tab of the V&C Dungeon Finder.
Criterion requires level 100 and average item level 770, and syncs item level to 795. It is a four-player, linear gauntlet with enhanced bosses; Variant actions are restricted. Matchmaking requires one tank, one healer, one melee DPS, and one physical- or magical-ranged DPS. A premade party of four is exempt from the item-level and role restrictions that apply to matchmaking.

These requirements and coordinates are listed in Square Enix’s Patch 7.45 notes, which added the three duties. The notes were published in 2026; requirements may change in a later patch.
