To unlock Yasuke for open-world play in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, progress through the main story and complete Act 1. PowerPyx identifies Act 1 as the milestone; PC Gamer’s search-result extract points to the main story quest “Temple of the Horseman.” The quest name is guide-reported, not confirmed by the Ubisoft sources cited here.
When Yasuke becomes playable
Yasuke is not available immediately. PowerPyx’s guide, published March 18, 2025, says to complete Act 1; PC Gamer’s search-result extract identifies “Temple of the Horseman” as the relevant main story quest. Expect cutscenes around the unlock, but the quest-specific details are not needed to reach it.

PowerPyx estimates five to eight hours if you focus only on the story. That is a guide estimate, not a guaranteed time: your pace and optional activities can make the prologue and Act 1 take longer.
How to switch to Yasuke
Once he is unlocked, choose him at a fast-travel point or switch characters from the inventory menu. PowerPyx reports holding Square on PlayStation or X on Xbox while in the inventory menu; follow the on-screen prompt for your platform and version.

What changes when you play as Yasuke
Yasuke favors direct combat, while Naoe is better suited to stealth and maneuverability. PowerPyx also lists Katas and Horse Archery as Yasuke-only activities, so switching protagonists can affect how you approach encounters and which character-specific activities you can pursue.

Unlocking Yasuke in the base game is an early story milestone. Ubisoft’s September 10, 2025 guide describes a separate requirement for the Claws of Awaji expansion: complete both Naoe’s and Yasuke’s main story arcs, then complete “Out of the Shadows,” which becomes available after the personal quests for Naoe, Yasuke, and Junjiro. Those are expansion-access conditions, not prerequisites for first playing Yasuke.

Ubisoft’s June 16, 2026 update gives separate requirements for the final post-launch story mission, “Black Tides”: finish the main story and the post-launch quests “A Critical Encounter” and “A Puzzlement.” Ubisoft says Claws of Awaji is not required for that mission. These later conditions do not change the Act 1 unlock milestone.
