To update a Linux DayZ dedicated server, stop it, run SteamCMD against the existing server install directory, then restart and verify it. Bohemia Interactive documents app ID 223350 for Stable and 1042420 for Experimental; use the branch that matches your players and check its latest official update notice before scheduling downtime.

Choose the Stable or Experimental branch

Stable is the general release path. Experimental is a test branch, so its current announcement may describe unfinished changes or known issues. Check the DayZ PC updates index and the relevant official branch notice before updating; an issue reported for an earlier release may not apply to the current one.

Bohemia Interactive’s Linux hosting guide assigns these Steam application IDs:

Branch SteamCMD app ID Use
Stable 223350 General release server
Experimental 1042420 Test-branch server

These IDs and the update command pattern are documented in the official Linux server guide. The current official notices retrieved for this article include PC Stable 1.29.163047, released June 1, 2026, and Experimental 1.30; check the live notices rather than relying on those dated version details as the latest available builds.

Update the server with SteamCMD

  1. Check the branch notice. Confirm the branch and review its current notes, especially if you run Experimental.
  2. Stop the server cleanly. Do not update files while the server process is using them.
  3. Run SteamCMD against the existing installation. For Stable, adapt this command to your SteamCMD and server paths and login setup:
    ~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login <steam_login> +app_update 223350 +quit

For Experimental, replace 223350 with 1042420. The guide says to update with the same command pattern used for installation. Use the existing server directory so SteamCMD updates that installation rather than creating an unintended one.

  4. Wait for SteamCMD to finish, then start the server. Check that it starts without errors, appears to clients, and accepts connections on the intended branch. Refer to the official server configuration reference for executable and launch-parameter details.

Update a modded server as well

Updating the DayZ server package does not by itself refresh every Workshop mod. The Linux guide demonstrates adding Workshop downloads to the SteamCMD update workflow, using commands in this form:

+workshop_download_item 221100 <workshop_item_id>

Include the Workshop items required by your server. After downloading them, refresh the links from the Workshop content into your server directory and update the mod signing keys if your setup uses them. The correct paths and item list depend on your installation and selected mods; the guide’s examples should not be copied as universal values.

Run the update safely as a Linux service

Use a normal Linux service account, not root; Bohemia Interactive’s hosting guide explicitly cautions against running the server as root. If you manage the server with systemd, the guide provides an example service that runs an update script before startup and includes commands for restarting, stopping, and checking status. Adapt its paths, account, branch, and mod list to your setup rather than adopting example values unchanged.

If the update appears to fail

  • SteamCMD updates the wrong directory: Check +force_install_dir and confirm it points to the server installation you actually run.
  • The server starts on the wrong branch: Check that the app ID matches your intended branch and that you updated the directory used by the running service.
  • Modded clients cannot join: Confirm the server has the required Workshop content and that the mod links and signing keys are current.
  • The PC game client itself will not update or seems corrupt: DayZ’s FAQ advises restarting Steam and verifying the local game cache; the Stable update notice also recommends Steam client integrity verification for PC client problems. These are client-side steps and do not repair server files.
  • An Experimental server freezes or has another branch-specific problem: Check the current Experimental notice. A historical notice recorded Linux community-server freezing for an earlier Experimental build, which does not establish that the same issue affects the current build.
