How to Update a Minecraft Bedrock Server Safely (Windows, Linux, Docker, and Panels)

By VGSources Team 11 min read

To update a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server without losing its world, stop the server, make a complete copy of its folder, download the current server package from the official Bedrock download page, extract that package into an empty directory, and copy the new program files over the old installation. Keep your existing worlds directory, server.properties, permissions.json, and allowlist.json. Start the server again and test the world before allowing players back in.

The exact procedure depends on whether you run the native Windows/Linux package, a Docker container, or a game-host control panel. The current build number changes with each Bedrock release, so verify it at minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock rather than relying on an old version number.

What an update changes—and what it must not change

A Bedrock Dedicated Server update replaces the server executable and the supporting files that implement the newer game protocol. Your saved worlds and local configuration are separate data. A safe update changes the program while carrying those data files forward unchanged.

Bedrock clients and dedicated servers are released in matching version families. The Minecraft Wiki records, for example, that Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.11.0.23 was released on April 23, 2019 to match Bedrock Edition 1.11.0. That historical pairing illustrates the rule, but it is not a current build recommendation. Always read the build shown on the official download page and make sure the players’ clients are on a compatible release.

Never treat a server zip as a save file. Replacing the entire directory, including worlds or your configuration, can remove the only copy of your map, settings, operator permissions, and allowlist.

Before you update: a pre-flight checklist

Do these checks while the server is still running normally. They reduce the chance that a failed update becomes data loss or an unexplained outage.

  • Tell players when the maintenance window starts and stop new connections.
  • Identify the real server directory. On a host or container, this may be a mounted volume rather than the folder shown by a web file manager.
  • Stop the server cleanly before copying or replacing files. Use the server console’s stop command when it is available, or stop the service/container through its manager.
  • Make a full, restorable copy of the entire server directory, not only the world. Include worlds, server.properties, permissions.json, allowlist.json, logs, and any scripts or service files you maintain.
  • Record the current server build, world folder name, startup options, port, and any custom settings. A screenshot or text copy of the panel settings is useful if you need to roll back.
  • Check free disk space. You need room for the download, an extracted temporary directory, and at least one backup.
  • Confirm that the download is for Bedrock Dedicated Server, not the Java Edition server or a client installer.

The backup is your recovery path. Do not delete it until the updated world has loaded and players have completed a normal play session.

Get the correct Bedrock server package

Use the official download page: minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock. It provides packages for Windows and Linux. The page’s current build number is the authoritative value for the day you update; a number copied from an old tutorial may be obsolete.

Download the package that matches your operating system and CPU architecture. Save the original archive outside the live server directory so an accidental extraction cannot overwrite production files. If the page offers a preview build as well as a stable build, use the stable package for a public server unless you are deliberately testing preview behavior on a separate copy.

Preview releases can contain format or gameplay changes before the corresponding stable release. Keep a preview installation isolated from the live world. Do not open your only production world with a preview executable.

Manual update on Windows

1. Stop and back up the existing installation

Stop the server from its console or service wrapper and wait for the process to exit. Copy the complete server folder to a dated backup location. The backup should contain the existing bedrock_server.exe, the worlds directory, and every JSON and configuration file you use.

2. Extract the new archive separately

Create an empty temporary folder, such as BedrockServer-new, and extract the downloaded Windows archive there. Do not extract directly into the live directory. This makes it possible to inspect the package and copy only the intended files.

3. Replace program files while preserving server data

Copy the extracted files into the existing server directory. When Windows asks whether to replace files, replace the executable and the package’s program files, but do not replace these existing items:

  • worlds — the saved world folders.
  • server.properties — ports, difficulty, game rules, and other local settings.
  • permissions.json — operator and permission entries.
  • allowlist.json — players allowed to join when the allowlist is enabled.

If the archive contains files with the same names as those four items, retain your existing copies. Keep the world folder’s name exactly the same; the value in server.properties must continue to point to it.

4. Start and verify

Run bedrock_server.exe from the server directory or start the service that normally launches it. Watch the console for a clean startup and the expected build. Join with an administrator account, confirm that the intended world loads, and check a few blocks, inventories, portals, and permissions before inviting everyone back.

Update Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server on Linux

1. Stop the process or service

Use the method that owns your server process. For a systemd installation, the command is commonly shaped like this, with your actual service name substituted:

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
sudo systemctl stop minecraft-bedrock

If you run the binary inside screen, tmux, or an SSH session, issue the server’s clean stop command and wait for the process to terminate. Do not copy new files while the server is writing region data.

2. Create a complete, dated backup

From the directory that contains your live server folder, a tar archive provides a simple full backup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
tar -czf bedrock-backup-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C /srv/minecraft-bedrock .

Replace /srv/minecraft-bedrock with the actual path. Store the archive outside the live directory, and verify that it exists and has a plausible size before proceeding. If your server data is on a separate mounted volume, back up that volume as well.

3. Preserve ownership and permissions

Note which Linux user runs the server. Extract the new archive into an empty staging directory, then copy its files into the live directory while retaining the existing world and configuration files. After copying, ensure the executable is runnable and the service user can read and write the directory. A typical executable check is:

chmod +x /srv/minecraft-bedrock/bedrock_server

Do not blindly run the server as root to hide an ownership problem. Correct the directory ownership for the account that normally runs the service.

4. Copy the new files without replacing local data

The staging directory should contain the newer bedrock_server binary and its accompanying files. Copy those program files over the old installation, excluding worlds, server.properties, permissions.json, and allowlist.json. If you use a scripted copy, explicitly exclude those paths rather than relying on a prompt that may not appear in a non-interactive shell.

5. Start and inspect logs

Launch the binary directly for a first test:

cd /srv/minecraft-bedrock
./bedrock_server

Alternatively, start your service:

sudo systemctl start minecraft-bedrock

The service name and paths are installation-specific. Confirm that the process stays running, the expected build is reported, and the configured world is opened. Test a client connection before returning the server to normal operation.

Which files should be replaced?

Use this division when comparing the extracted package with your live directory:

Item Update action Reason
Bedrock server executable Replace with the file from the new package This is the program being updated.
Other files shipped in the new package Copy the newer versions, unless you deliberately maintain a local modification They support the matching executable.
worlds Keep the existing directory unchanged It contains the saved world data.
server.properties Keep the existing file It contains your server’s local settings.
permissions.json Keep the existing file It preserves operator and permission entries.
allowlist.json Keep the existing file It preserves the players allowed by your allowlist.

If a newer package introduces a genuinely new configuration key, compare the new sample file with your existing one and add only the needed setting after reading its current documentation. Do not replace the whole file simply because the package contains one.

Docker-based Bedrock servers

A containerized server is updated through its image tag, not by manually replacing a zip inside the running container. Community images such as itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server publish tags including latest. The exact tag you choose determines which server build is pulled.

  1. Stop or quiesce the container using your normal Docker or Compose workflow.
  2. Back up the host directory or named volume mounted at the container’s Bedrock data path. Verify that the backup includes worlds and the JSON permission files.
  3. Change the image tag in your Compose file or deployment definition if you pin versions. Using a fixed version improves repeatability; using latest follows the image publisher’s latest tag and requires you to monitor changes.
  4. Pull the image and recreate the container with the same data-volume mapping and environment settings. Do not create a fresh container without the old volume attached.
  5. Read the container logs, connect with a test client, and confirm that the expected world and settings are present.

Container recreation is safe only when persistent data is mounted outside the disposable container layer. If you are unsure where the world is stored, inspect the volume mapping before deleting or recreating anything.

Game-host control panels

Managed panels usually provide a version selector, an installer, or a reinstall action. Those tools replace the server software for you and commonly leave world data in place, but the retention behavior differs by host and by the option you select.

Minecraft: Switch Edition

  • Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
  1. Use the panel’s stop control and wait for the status to show the server is offline.
  2. Create the panel’s backup or download a copy of the world and configuration files.
  3. Choose the Bedrock version-change or reinstall tool, not a Java server installer.
  4. Read the confirmation screen carefully. If it offers a choice between deleting all files and preserving data, select the preservation option.
  5. Start the server, inspect the console, and test the world before players reconnect.

A panel’s statement that world data is normally retained is not a substitute for your own backup. Support staff may be able to restore a panel snapshot, but you should not depend on that during an urgent rollback.

Minecraft Bedrock server update: world not loading

A world that fails to load after an update is commonly associated with a level-format mismatch between the old and new builds. The safest response is to stop experimenting on the only copy of the world.

First response

  1. Stop the updated server and preserve its logs. The error text and timestamp help identify whether the failure occurs during world conversion, permissions, or startup.
  2. Restore the complete pre-update backup to a separate test directory, not over the only remaining copy.
  3. Start the restored copy with the previous server build. If it loads, the world data is intact and the update path is the likely cause.
  4. Test the newer build against a duplicate of that restored world. Keep the production backup untouched.

When a gradual update is safer

If a large version jump will not open the world, move through intermediate stable builds when they are available, taking a new backup after each successful conversion. This can reduce the format distance between the original world and the target build. There is no universal guarantee that every intermediate build will be available or that gradual updates will solve the problem, so keep the original backup.

Other checks

  • Confirm that the world folder name still matches level-name in server.properties.
  • Check file ownership and write permissions on Linux.
  • Make sure the container or panel is using the intended data volume.
  • Remove no files from the world folder merely because their names look unfamiliar; they may be part of the current format.
  • Compare the startup log with the previous log to identify missing libraries, ports, or configuration errors.

How to update a Bedrock server without losing its world

The reliable method is to treat the world as an immutable asset during the software replacement:

  1. Make a full backup while the server is stopped.
  2. Duplicate the backup or world into a test location.
  3. Install the new executable in an empty staging directory.
  4. Copy only the program files into the live directory, leaving worlds and local JSON/configuration files in place.
  5. Start the test copy first when the update is significant or a preview build is involved.
  6. Promote the tested files to production only after the world opens and basic gameplay works.

Keeping the world folder name unchanged is essential. Renaming it during the update can make a healthy world appear missing because the server is looking for a different directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollback procedure

If the new build crashes, rejects the world, or causes client compatibility problems, stop it and roll back as a complete set. Do not mix a new executable with partially converted world files unless you are intentionally testing that combination.

  1. Stop the server and prevent automatic restarts while you work.
  2. Move the failed installation to a dated folder so its logs remain available.
  3. Restore the entire pre-update directory from your backup, including the old executable and configuration.
  4. Start the restored build and confirm that the world loads.
  5. Keep the failed copy and its logs for diagnosis; do not overwrite the backup with the failed state.

After rollback, schedule a test on a duplicate world rather than repeatedly opening the production world with different builds.

Manual, Docker, or panel: which update path fits?

Method Control Main risk Setup effort
Manual Windows/Linux files Full control over binaries, configuration, and backups Accidental overwrite or incorrect permissions during copying Lowest direct cost; requires careful file work
Docker image Version tags and reproducible container definitions Recreating a container without its persistent world volume Requires Docker and volume knowledge
Game-host panel Most steps abstracted behind an installer or version selector Choosing a destructive reinstall or trusting retention without a backup Requires a hosting account; least hands-on maintenance

Choose the method you already understand well enough to locate, back up, and restore the world. Convenience does not remove the need for a backup; control does not require manually editing world data.

Post-update verification checklist

  • The console reports the intended Bedrock server build and remains running.
  • The expected world folder opens without a conversion or corruption error.
  • Your spawn area, recent builds, inventories, dimensions, and portals are present.
  • Operators still have the intended permissions.
  • The allowlist behaves as expected for an allowed and a non-allowed account.
  • Players on the matching Bedrock client release can connect.
  • Ports, server name, difficulty, simulation distance, and other local settings remain as configured.
  • A fresh backup is created after the successful test.

Key rules to remember

Check the official page for the current build, stop the server before replacing files, back up the whole directory, and preserve worlds, server.properties, permissions.json, and allowlist.json. Test preview or major updates on a copy first. Docker images and control panels have different update workflows, but they still depend on correctly mounted or retained world data.
