To update a PULSE Elite, use the PS5’s built-in Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update menu, or use Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. The Windows driver can update both the headset and its included PlayStation Link USB adapter, so a PS5 is not required. Sony’s documented instructions do not provide a Mac update method.

Choose the update method that matches your setup

There are two documented ways to install PULSE Elite device-software updates. The PS5 route uses a system menu and does not require a separate updater. The Windows route uses Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver and is useful when you do not own or cannot access a PS5.

Route What you need Can update the headset? Can update the USB adapter? Does it require a PS5?
PS5 A PS5, the PULSE Elite and, when needed, the included PlayStation Link USB adapter Yes Yes Yes
Windows PC Windows 10 or Windows 11, PlayStation Link PC Driver, an available USB port, internet access for installation and a USB cable for device updates Yes Yes No
Mac No documented updater in the cited Sony instructions Not established Not established A PS5 is the documented alternative if you can use one

Sony uses “device software” for PS Link updates. In other contexts, the same software is commonly called firmware, so a support page may use either term for the update you are looking for.

Before you start

Have the headset and adapter available

The PULSE Elite is designed to use PlayStation Link wireless technology. Its included PlayStation Link USB adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. For the PS5 method, connect that adapter if the console needs it to establish the wireless connection. For the Windows method, the adapter must be inserted into an available USB port before the driver can identify the PS Link devices.

Keep the console or computer connected

The PS5 checks for available device software through its system update interface. The Windows driver needs internet access for installation and a USB connection when it performs a device update. Have the required cable ready before beginning the PC flow; Sony lists a USB cable as a requirement for updating devices, although its instructions do not specify every screen that appears during the process.

Update the PS5 system software too

Sony advises keeping the PS5 system software current as well as the PS Link device software. These are separate update areas: updating the headset does not substitute for installing a pending PS5 system update.

How to update the PULSE Elite on PS5

1. Turn on the PS5 and establish the PS Link connection

Start the PS5 and connect the headset through PlayStation Link. If necessary, insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into the console. The adapter is paired with the headset from the factory, so you normally do not have to perform a separate pairing procedure before checking for an update.

2. Open the PS Link device-software menu

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Select Headset.
  4. Choose PS Link Device Software Update.

This is the built-in PS5 path for checking the wireless headset and its PlayStation Link USB adapter. The labels above are the menu names Sony documents; they may be presented slightly differently if your console is using a different supported language.

3. Check both listed devices

The update screen shows the software status for the wireless headset and the USB adapter. Check each entry rather than assuming that updating one automatically means the other has the same version. Sony does not publish one fixed “latest” version number on the cited instructions, so the version displayed on your own PS5 is the authoritative status for your hardware.

4. Install an available update

If the PS5 reports that new device software is available, follow the on-screen instructions. Leave the headset connected through PlayStation Link while the update is being processed and follow any prompts before returning to another PS5 screen. The exact prompts can vary with the software currently installed, which is why Sony’s instructions describe the menu path and on-screen flow rather than one universal sequence of dialog boxes.

5. Check the PS5 system-software status

After the accessory check, make sure the console itself does not have a pending system update. Sony recommends maintaining both layers: the PS Link device software for the headset and adapter, and the PS5 operating software that manages the console.

How to update the PULSE Elite from a Windows PC

Windows requirements

Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver page lists the following requirements for the Windows updater:

Requirement What Sony specifies
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11
Storage At least 20 MB available
Display 1,280 × 800 or higher
Network Internet access for installation
Hardware connection An available compatible USB port
Cable A USB cable for updating devices

The requirements page is for Windows. It does not establish support for macOS, Linux or another desktop operating system.

1. Insert the PlayStation Link USB adapter

Plug the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into an available USB port on the Windows PC. Sony says the driver installs automatically after the adapter is inserted and that Windows notifies you when installation is complete.

2. Open the driver’s quick menu

When Windows reports that installation has completed, open the PlayStation Link PC Driver quick menu from the Windows notification. The quick menu is the entry point for checking and updating the connected PS Link hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Connect the USB cable when requested

Start the update flow in the driver. When the driver asks for a cable, connect the PULSE Elite with the USB cable and continue with the on-screen instructions. Sony identifies the cable as necessary for device updates but does not publish every individual prompt, so use the wording shown by the installed driver rather than relying on a fixed sequence copied from another version.

4. Let the driver complete the device update

Follow the driver’s instructions for the headset and the adapter. Because Sony lists firmware updates for both PS Link devices, check whether the driver presents one or two update actions and complete every action it offers. Do not close the quick menu until the driver indicates that the current update flow is finished.

5. If the quick menu never appears

Sony’s troubleshooting instruction is to remove and reinsert the PlayStation Link USB adapter, reboot the PC and check the Windows notification again. This addresses the specific case in which the driver’s quick menu is not displayed after insertion.

What the two routes actually update

The PULSE Elite setup has two PS Link components that can receive device software: the wireless headset and the USB adapter. The PS5 update screen reports software for both. Sony’s Windows driver likewise lists support for PULSE Elite firmware updates and USB adapter firmware updates. If one component is current while the other is not, install the update offered for the component that still needs it.

The update is not the same thing as updating a game, the PS5 operating system or a PC driver for unrelated audio hardware. On Sony’s support pages, “firmware” and “device software” refer to the PS Link software installed on the headset or adapter.

How to confirm that the update worked

On PS5

Return to Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update and inspect the entries for the wireless headset and USB adapter. The screen is also the place to check again if you were unsure whether a prompt completed. Because Sony does not state one universal current version on the instructions, record the version shown for your own devices rather than comparing it with an unverified number from a forum or video.

On Windows

Use the PlayStation Link PC Driver quick menu again after completing the flow. The driver is the Windows utility Sony provides for checking and updating PS Link devices without a PS5. If it still offers an update, follow that offer; if it reports that the devices are current, the driver has no newer package for the connected hardware at that time.

Test the connection you were trying to fix

Once the software status is current, use the headset in the environment where the problem occurred. An update can address device-software issues, but it does not guarantee that every audio, USB-port, wireless-interference or console-account problem has the same cause. If the original symptom remains, continue with the troubleshooting steps below instead of repeatedly starting the update.

Troubleshooting when the update does not solve the problem

The PS5 does not show the PS Link update menu

  • Confirm that the console is on and that the headset is connected through PlayStation Link.
  • Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter if the connection is not established.
  • Check the PS5 system software, since Sony recommends keeping the console software current alongside the accessory software.
  • Reopen Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update after the connection is recognized.

Windows installs nothing or the quick menu is missing

  • Remove and reinsert the PlayStation Link USB adapter.
  • Restart the Windows PC.
  • After Windows starts again, check the notification area for the driver’s quick menu.
  • Verify that the computer meets Sony’s listed requirements, including Windows 10 or 11, an available compatible USB port, internet access for installation and at least 20 MB of storage.

These steps come directly from Sony’s guidance for a missing quick menu. They do not create a Mac procedure; the driver requirements and instructions are specifically for Windows.

The driver asks for a cable you do not have connected

Connect a USB cable when the update flow requests it. Sony lists a USB cable as required for updating devices even though the adapter itself initially connects wirelessly to the headset. If the cable is connected but the driver does not proceed, follow the driver’s current on-screen instruction and restart the flow rather than assuming that the wireless adapter alone is sufficient for the update.

The headset still behaves incorrectly after both devices are current

Sony’s troubleshooting material includes a headset reset. On the Spanish support page where this instruction is documented, hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds, then press the button to turn the headset on again. The wording was published for that regional support page, so check the support page for your own locale before relying on a translated or region-specific instruction. A reset is a troubleshooting action, not another firmware installation, and should be considered only after checking that the headset and included adapter have the latest device software.

Mac owners: what is and is not documented

Sony’s reviewed update instructions document the PS5 menu and the Windows PlayStation Link PC Driver. They do not document a macOS driver or a Mac-based PULSE Elite update procedure. Do not install an unofficial utility or assume that a Windows installer will work on a Mac based only on the headset’s USB connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use a Mac and can access a PS5, the documented option is to perform the update through the PS5 menu. If no PS5 is available, the cited Sony instructions do not establish another supported route, so the safest course is to consult Sony’s support information for your region for any newly published platform support rather than treating an unverified workaround as official.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for a single universal firmware number: Sony’s cited update page does not state one fixed current version. Use the versions reported for your own headset and adapter.
  • Updating only the headset: The adapter has its own device software. Check both entries on PS5 or complete every update action offered by the Windows driver.
  • Confusing the PS5 update with a console update: The accessory menu updates PS Link devices; the PS5 system software is maintained separately.
  • Expecting the Windows driver to work on macOS: Sony’s listed requirements cover Windows 10 and Windows 11 only.
  • Assuming the adapter needs to be paired manually out of the box: The included adapter is paired with the headset from the factory. Insert it and follow the platform’s documented connection and update flow.
  • Continuing to repeat an update when the symptom has another cause: Once the headset and adapter report current software, move to connection checks or the documented reset instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same package.

PS5 versus Windows: which should you use?

Use the PS5 route when you already have a console

The PS5 method is the shortest path because the update control is built into the console’s Settings menu. It avoids installing a separate Windows utility and provides one place to inspect the software status of both the headset and adapter.

Use the Windows route when you need to update without a PS5

The PlayStation Link PC Driver is specifically intended to update PS Link devices without a PS5. It is the practical choice for a Windows 10 or Windows 11 owner who has the required USB port, internet access and cable.

Do not treat Mac as a third documented route

Based on Sony’s published instructions covered here, Mac updating is not established. A Mac user should use a PS5 if one is available, or verify current regional support before attempting anything else.

Final checklist

  1. Identify whether you are using a PS5 or a Windows 10/11 PC.
  2. Have the PULSE Elite and its included PlayStation Link USB adapter available.
  3. On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.
  4. On Windows, insert the adapter, wait for the driver installation notification and open the driver’s quick menu.
  5. Connect the USB cable when the Windows update flow requests it.
  6. Check software status for both the headset and adapter.
  7. Keep PS5 system software current as well as PS Link device software.
  8. If Windows does not show the quick menu, remove and reinsert the adapter, reboot the PC and check again.
  9. If the issue remains after both devices are current, consider Sony’s documented headset reset, checking the support page for your region first.
