For a supported self-hosted Ghost installation, the normal update is an in-place operation: switch to the site’s non-root administrator, check the available release, create a ghost backup, run ghost update, and test the entire publication after the restart. Major-version changes need release-note and theme-compatibility work. Ghost installations below 3.0 and production sites running SQLite3 should generally be migrated through a reinstall rather than forced through an in-place upgrade.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Choose the right update path first
Do not begin by reinstalling Ghost or by running an update as root. The correct path depends primarily on your Ghost major version, database engine, and the age of the Ghost-CLI installation.

| Ghost 3.x, 4.x, or 5.x using MySQL | In-place update with Ghost-CLI | Ghost’s update guidance supports this route when the installation is otherwise healthy. |
| Ghost below 3.0 | Reinstall and migrate | Older releases cross several compatibility boundaries and should not be force-upgraded as if they were current. |
| Production Ghost using SQLite3 | Reinstall and migrate | Ghost’s update guide recommends reinstalling production SQLite3 sites. |
| MariaDB installation | Plan a migration to MySQL 8 before or as part of the upgrade | Ghost advises MariaDB users to move to MySQL 8 for the supported deployment path. |
| Installation created with a pre-1.0.0 Ghost-CLI | Follow the deprecated-CLI migration or reinstall route | Very old CLI layouts may need cleanup and manual migration before ordinary updates work. |
The official Ghost update guide and deprecated-CLI guidance should be read before selecting a path. If the site falls into more than one row, use the more conservative route: make a complete backup and plan a migration.
Confirm the server and record its starting state
Ghost commands should be run from the installation directory by the non-root user that owns and manages the site. Root access may be needed for separate operating-system administration, but it should not be your normal Ghost-CLI identity.

Find the installation and administrator
- Locate the directory containing the Ghost installation and change into it.
- Switch to the non-root account that normally operates this site.
- Check that the public site and Ghost Admin are currently working before changing anything.
Write down the current Ghost version, Ghost-CLI version, Node.js version, database engine and version, active theme, and important integrations. This record gives you a before-and-after comparison and helps support staff identify what changed.

ghost version establishes the Ghost and CLI state, while ghost check-update reports whether Ghost has a release available. The exact database command may differ on a system where the MySQL client is exposed under another local name; record the engine and version shown by your administration tools.

Ghost’s current documented self-hosting stack is Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, systemd, at least 1 GB of memory, and a non-root user for Ghost commands. Other operating systems, databases, and web servers may work, but Ghost says they are not officially supported or widely adopted. Treat a mismatch as an upgrade risk rather than assuming that an otherwise successful command means the platform is supported.
Back up before every update
A backup is the recovery point for a failed update, an incompatible theme, or an unnoticed integration problem. Create it before changing Ghost, Node.js, the database, or the server configuration.
Create Ghost’s official backup
ghost backup
The resulting backup ZIP contains the core recovery material documented by Ghost: JSON content, a complete member CSV export, every installed theme, images, files, media, routes, and redirects. Keep the archive until the updated site has been checked and you are satisfied that recovery is no longer needed.
Keep independent copies of critical data
Do not leave the only backup on the same server you are about to modify. Copy the ZIP to separate storage and, where possible, retain additional exports:
Rank #2
- Content JSON exported from Ghost Admin’s Labs area.
- Member CSV export.
- Routes and redirects exports.
- Downloaded copies of every custom or modified theme.
- A separate copy of the
contentdirectory’s images, files, and media.
These copies are useful if the Ghost process, disk, or server becomes unavailable. They also make it possible to rebuild a site when an old installation cannot be upgraded in place.
Run a normal in-place update
Use this procedure for a supported current installation, especially Ghost 3.x, 4.x, or 5.x on MySQL.
1. Schedule a maintenance window
Choose a period when a short interruption is acceptable. Ghost’s CLI documentation says new releases are typically issued every one to two weeks, so an update may be routine, but a major release or a runtime change deserves more time for testing and rollback.
2. Check the release and create the backup
ghost check-update
ghost backup
Confirm that the available version is one you intend to install. If there is no update, do not force a reinstall merely to make the version number change. Preserve the backup output and verify that the archive was written successfully.
3. Update to the latest release
ghost update
Ghost-CLI resolves the latest release appropriate for the installation. Allow the process to complete without closing the terminal or interrupting the service. The CLI can perform an automatic rollback when an update fails.
4. Use a controlled target when required
ghost update <version>
Replace <version> with the exact Ghost version you have selected after reading its release notes. A controlled target is useful when you need to stage a compatibility change, coordinate several servers, or remain on a particular minor release while testing.
5. Stage the restart when necessary
ghost update <version> --no-restart
The --no-restart option lets you defer the service restart while you finish a coordinated change. The site will not be running the new code until the appropriate restart is performed, so schedule that action deliberately rather than assuming the update is live.
6. Roll back a failed update
ghost update --rollback
Use the documented rollback option when the update must be reversed. If the command itself cannot restore service, stop making changes, preserve the CLI output and logs, and restore from the pre-update backup or follow Ghost’s migration documentation. Do not delete the old installation or backup while diagnosing the failure.

Ghost distinguishes frequent releases from major releases. Its CLI documentation describes major versions as arriving approximately every 12–18 months and breaking backwards compatibility, with a more involved process that includes backups and theme compatibility work. A major upgrade is therefore not just a larger ordinary update.
Read the release-specific breaking changes
Before crossing the major-version boundary, read the release notes and the Ghost update guide. Identify changes that affect themes, integrations, configuration, member features, mail delivery, or the runtime. Record which customizations are present so that you can test each one after the upgrade.
Bring the site to the latest minor release first
Ghost’s guidance is to update to the latest minor release in the current major line before moving to the next major line. This reduces the number of simultaneous changes and puts the source installation on the most current migration path available for that major version.
Check the theme before updating
Review every installed theme, including a custom fork and any theme with edited templates. Confirm that its compatibility notes cover the target Ghost major version. Keep an untouched downloaded copy and a working copy of your current theme so that you can restore the previous design if rendering changes.

Plan the rollback boundary
Take the full backup immediately before the major upgrade and keep a second copy off-server. Decide in advance how you will return to the previous version if Admin, publication templates, memberships, mail, or a critical integration fails. A rollback plan is only useful if the old theme, exports, and backup archive are still available.
When reinstalling Ghost is safer than updating in place
Reinstallation is a migration, not a shortcut. It creates a clean supported installation and moves the publication’s data and configuration into it. Ghost’s guidance specifically favors this route for sites below Ghost 3.0 and for production sites using SQLite3.
| Decision factor | In-place update | Reinstall and migrate |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Ghost 3.x–5.x on MySQL with a current, healthy CLI installation | Ghost below 3.0, production SQLite3, or a legacy CLI installation |
| Database work | Existing MySQL database is upgraded in place by the supported process | Data is imported into the new installation; MariaDB users should plan for MySQL 8 |
| Theme work | Check compatibility before a major-version jump | Install and test themes on the clean target before switching traffic |
| Downtime planning | Usually a short maintenance window, with restart timing controlled by the CLI | Requires migration, import, configuration, and cutover planning |
| Rollback | Ghost-CLI supports automatic rollback and the documented --rollback option |
Return to the original site or restore the backup while the new installation is isolated |
| Migration complexity | Lower when the stack is supported and versions are current | Higher, but avoids forcing unsupported version and database transitions |
Prepare a reinstall migration
- Update Node.js and Ghost-CLI first, as required by the Ghost reinstall guide.
- Bring the existing site to its latest minor version before the migration where the guide permits it.
- Run
ghost backupand keep the ZIP plus the independent exports. - Follow Ghost’s reinstall migration procedure, importing content, members, themes, media, routes, and redirects into the new supported installation.
- Test the new site privately or on a controlled hostname before changing the public destination.
Do not treat a successful content import as the end of the migration. Mail credentials, payment or membership settings, web-server configuration, scheduled jobs, and custom integrations still need explicit verification.

Repair the legacy Ghost-CLI situation first
Installations made with Ghost-CLI before version 1.0.0 can have an older directory layout or process configuration. Ghost’s deprecated-CLI guide warns that these sites may require cleanup, manual migration, or a reinstall path before normal updates work.
Do not repeatedly run ghost update against a legacy installation while hoping the CLI will repair itself. Identify the CLI generation, create and copy the backup, then follow the deprecated-CLI instructions. If the site is also below Ghost 3.0 or uses production SQLite3, the case for a clean reinstall is stronger.
Restart and verify the complete publication
An update is complete only when the public publication and its connected services work. If you used --no-restart, perform the required restart after the staged changes.

Common failure modes and safe responses
The update reports an incompatible environment
Compare the server with Ghost’s documented stack: Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, systemd, at least 1 GB of memory, and a non-root Ghost administrator. Correct the unsupported component through a planned change, not by repeatedly retrying the same update. MariaDB should be treated as a migration issue because Ghost advises moving to MySQL 8.
The site starts but the theme is broken
Do not discard the backup or overwrite the old theme. Switch to a known-compatible theme or restore the saved theme copy while you inspect the target major version’s breaking changes. Reapply custom template changes only after the base theme works.
Admin works but mail or memberships fail
Check credentials, environment settings, webhooks, and the integration’s compatibility with the new Ghost version. A page load alone does not prove that mail delivery or membership payments work; use a real test signup and test message where appropriate.
The CLI cannot manage the installation
Check whether the site was created with a pre-1.0.0 Ghost-CLI. Use the deprecated-CLI migration instructions and preserve the backup before changing paths, permissions, or process configuration. A reinstall is often safer than trying to convert an obsolete layout in place.
The update fails partway through
Allow Ghost-CLI’s rollback behavior to complete, then use ghost update --rollback if a reversal is required. Confirm service status, public pages, and Admin before attempting another update. Keep the failure output and the pre-update archive; changing several variables at once makes recovery harder.
How often should a self-hosted Ghost blog be updated?
Ghost’s CLI documentation says releases are typically published every one to two weeks, while major releases arrive approximately every 12–18 months. You do not need to apply every release the minute it appears, but you should monitor available updates, maintain backups, and avoid allowing the installation to drift far behind the supported runtime. Apply routine updates during a planned window and reserve a longer window for major-version, Node.js, database, or operating-system changes.
Keep the update record with the backup location, selected Ghost version, theme compatibility decision, integration checks, and rollback result. This turns future maintenance into a repeatable procedure instead of an emergency reconstruction.
