Use the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox console or Windows PC to update an Xbox controller. On a console, you can also check the controller’s firmware version and see whether an update is available under Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
Check your controller’s firmware on an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller you want to check.
- On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select the ellipsis (…) to view firmware information.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says that if the screen reports no update is available, the controller is current. If it offers Update, follow the on-screen steps. Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting guidance describes this check.
Update the controller with Xbox Accessories
Xbox identifies the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox console or Windows PC as a route for controller firmware updates. On console, open the app and follow its prompts for the connected controller. On Windows, install or open Xbox Accessories and follow the app’s update prompts. The exact screens may vary with the controller and app version; Microsoft lists the app as supporting updates on both platforms. Xbox’s controller firmware update page and Xbox Accessories app help provide official guidance.
If a controller update fails or appears stuck
- Check the connection: Try a different USB cable and make sure it is firmly connected at both ends. Match the cable to the port on your controller; Microsoft’s guidance mentions both micro-USB and USB-C ports, so do not assume every controller uses the same connector.
- Disconnect other accessories: Remove connected accessories and try the update again.
- Restart the console: Power-cycle it, reconnect the controller, and retry.
- Allow time for the update: Microsoft’s 2021 video guidance says to leave a controller connected by USB for up to five minutes if it will not update, because the update may continue in the background. These are published instructions from 2021; app behavior and labels may have changed.
These troubleshooting steps are described in Microsoft’s controller update troubleshooting video and guidance.

Which update route should you use?
| Route | What it’s for | Connection note |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | Check firmware status and update through console settings or Xbox Accessories. | For update troubleshooting, Microsoft recommends USB; use a cable that fits your controller. |
| Windows PC | Update through the Xbox Accessories app. | The available official guidance confirms the app route but does not establish that every controller model can update wirelessly. |
Why there is no single “latest firmware” number here
The official material cited here does not establish one current firmware number that applies to every Xbox controller. Use the version displayed for your controller in Accessories rather than relying on a universal number; controller variants and update availability may differ.
