You generally cannot update a graphics driver and guarantee that games will skip shader recompilation. A driver update can change the environment that compiled shaders rely on, so a game or driver may need to rebuild cached shaders. Let that work finish before judging performance; supported NVIDIA systems also have a beta feature that can rebuild some DirectX 12 game shaders while the PC is idle or on demand.
Why a driver update can make a game compile shaders again
Games translate shader programs into forms that can run on a particular graphics system. After a GPU driver update, the driver/compiler environment may have changed, making previously cached outputs unusable or unsuitable. NVIDIA notes that modern games may repeat shader translations after GPU driver updates. NVIDIA’s announcement describes this as part of the game-and-driver workflow, not as a problem that every user can switch off.
Direct3D also supports driver-mediated shader caching. Microsoft documents OS-managed in-memory and disk caches intended to help subsequent runs, but that support is not a universal user-facing control for preventing a rebuild after a driver change. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation explains the cache support.
Update the driver, then let affected games rebuild shaders
- Identify your GPU and operating system. Use the official software or support channel for the GPU vendor to find a suitable current driver. Driver-installation menus differ by vendor and can change, so follow the instructions shown by that vendor rather than relying on a generic sequence of clicks.
- Install the driver and restart if prompted. Avoid interrupting the vendor’s installer.
- Open each affected game and allow its shader compilation to finish. Depending on the game, this may happen at launch or during play. Where the game offers a shader-compilation screen or progress indicator, wait for it to complete before starting performance-critical play.
- Judge performance after the rebuild. The first run after a driver change may not represent later runs while caches are being repopulated.
These steps describe the general Windows PC gaming approach. The cited information does not establish one procedure for every operating system, GPU vendor, game, or graphics API.

NVIDIA Auto Shader Compilation: a supported mitigation, not a guarantee
NVIDIA announced Auto Shader Compilation on March 31, 2026. The company says it can rebuild DirectX 12 game shaders after a driver update while the system is idle or on demand. NVIDIA states the feature requires GeForce Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer; availability depends on supported GeForce hardware and the current NVIDIA app. Check NVIDIA’s feature announcement for current requirements and availability.
- Open the NVIDIA app and go to Graphics > Global Settings > Shader Cache.
- Check for Auto Shader Compilation and enable it if the option is available for your system.
- To start a supported rebuild immediately, use Compile Now if that control appears. Otherwise, the feature may rebuild while the system is idle.
App navigation and labels may change. The feature is beta and applies to supported DirectX 12 games; it does not mean shaders will never compile again. NVIDIA says first-time game installation still requires shader generation inside the game.

How this differs from precompilation through a storefront
Auto Shader Compilation and Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery address shader preparation at different points. Advanced Shader Delivery can deliver precompiled shaders through a compatible storefront, but it depends on compatible Windows, GPU and driver support as well as storefront participation. It is not a general setting that applies to every game or store. See Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery documentation for its compatibility requirements.

If compilation keeps recurring or a game misbehaves
- Check the game’s official support information and the release notes for the exact driver version you installed.
- Distinguish a one-time rebuild after a driver update from repeated compilation on every launch; they can have different causes.
- Do not routinely clear shader caches to prevent recompilation. Clearing cached data is more likely to require rebuilding, and the cited documentation does not recommend cache clearing as prevention.
- Consider a rollback only if the game’s support guidance or the driver’s release notes indicate a relevant issue. Cache behavior can have driver-specific exceptions: AMD, for example, documented a historical cache failure involving accented Windows usernames. AMD’s release notes describe that case.
