NVIDIA’s desktop GeForce RTX 40-series cards have 8GB, 12GB, 16GB or 24GB of video memory, depending on the model. Capacity matters, but it is not a stand-alone measure of gaming performance: memory-chip layout, bus width, cache, resolution and the game’s workload all affect what a GPU can do with its VRAM.
How much VRAM does each desktop RTX 40-series GPU have?
NVIDIA’s desktop lineup ranges from 8GB on the RTX 4060 to 24GB on the RTX 4090. The RTX 4060 Ti is offered in two memory capacities; the other models below have one listed configuration.
| GPU | VRAM capacity |
|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 4060 | 8GB |
| GeForce RTX 4060 Ti | 8GB or 16GB |
| GeForce RTX 4070 | 12GB |
| GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER | 12GB |
| GeForce RTX 4070 Ti | 12GB |
| GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER | 16GB |
| GeForce RTX 4080 | 16GB |
| GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER | 16GB |
| GeForce RTX 4090 | 24GB |
These are desktop configurations in NVIDIA’s product table; they should not be treated as a specification list for laptop GPUs. NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series lineup identifies the capacities for the listed desktop models.
Is 12GB enough for an RTX 4070?
There is no universal VRAM threshold that makes every game or setting work well. The RTX 4070’s 12GB is its installed capacity, but whether a particular game needs more depends on factors such as resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, the scene and other software using the GPU. A capacity figure alone cannot promise a particular frame rate or setting.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
When comparing cards, consider the performance level and workload alongside memory capacity. A larger VRAM figure can provide room for workloads that use more memory, but it does not by itself establish that one GPU is faster overall.
Why does the RTX 4060 Ti come in 8GB and 16GB, but not 12GB?
NVIDIA attributes the available capacities to the density of memory chips and how they are arranged across the GPU’s memory channels. The company says current GDDR6 and GDDR6X memory chips are available in 8Gb (1GB) and 16Gb (2GB) densities. On the 128-bit RTX 4060 Ti design, the 8GB model uses four 16Gb chips, while the 16GB model uses eight. NVIDIA says the densities cannot be mixed to create a 12GB configuration for this layout. NVIDIA’s explanation of the RTX 4060 Ti memory configurations describes the chip-density and channel constraints.

Does memory bus width determine gaming performance?
No. Bus width is one part of a memory subsystem, not a complete performance rating. NVIDIA has said bus width alone is not a sufficient indicator because cache and the rest of the architecture affect how often a GPU needs to access external memory.
To illustrate the point, NVIDIA compared an RTX 4060 Ti test configuration with a 32MB L2 cache against a 2MB-cache test configuration. The company reported just over 50% lower average memory-bus traffic and up to 34% higher frame rates across its cited game and synthetic tests. Those are NVIDIA’s controlled results, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of the same gain in every game. NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 Ti technical explanation provides the test context.

That is why comparing two GPUs by bus width alone can mislead. Capacity, memory type, cache, architecture and the workload all matter; the wider interface is not automatically the faster card.

An OSD’s VRAM figure is an allocation signal, not a precise reading of how much memory a game actively needs at that instant. NVIDIA says games may reserve memory in case it is needed, while actual requirements change from scene to scene. At a memory limit, behavior can range from stuttering or reloading assets to seamless streaming from system RAM. A high displayed allocation therefore does not, by itself, prove that a game is short of VRAM. NVIDIA’s discussion of VRAM allocation and monitoring explains this limitation.

Which RTX 40-series card should you choose for 4K or streaming?
For 4K gaming
Start with the performance demands of the games and settings you intend to use, then weigh capacity as one factor. The RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and RTX 4080 models have 16GB, while the RTX 4090 has 24GB; those figures describe memory capacity, not a guarantee of 4K performance. Resolution, texture settings, ray tracing and the game itself remain relevant, and the supplied specifications alone do not establish a single best card for every 4K player.
For live streaming
NVIDIA says RTX 40-series GPUs add eighth-generation NVENC encoding with AV1 support, aimed at more efficient, higher-resolution broadcasts. That encoding capability is a distinct consideration from VRAM capacity: compare it against your streaming workflow rather than assuming that a card with more memory automatically produces a better stream. NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series announcement describes the encoder and AV1 support.
