Before troubleshooting Gears of War: E-Day on PC, install available Windows updates, check optional driver updates, and make sure your graphics driver comes from the PC maker or GPU maker. Restart, then retest the same problem. Updates are a sensible first maintenance step—not a guaranteed fix.
Update Windows and check optional drivers first
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted.
- Inspect optional driver updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Expand Driver updates if it appears. Microsoft notes that optional drivers are not installed automatically. Choose a graphics driver only if it matches the adapter in your PC.
- Restart and retest. After installing updates, restart Windows. Try the same game action that triggered the issue, so you can tell whether anything changed.
Windows 11’s minimum graphics requirement is DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver; that operating-system requirement does not establish whether a PC meets E-Day’s own specifications. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 users should not expect ordinary free Windows Update security fixes after that date.
Get a compatible graphics driver from an official source
If Windows Update does not offer a suitable graphics driver, identify the exact adapter in Device Manager > Display adapters. Then use the computer maker’s support page—especially for a laptop or other OEM system—or the GPU maker’s official support page. Match the driver to the exact adapter and supported Windows version and architecture, install it, and restart.
For laptops, start with the PC maker’s recommended graphics package when it provides a customized driver. If that package does not resolve the issue, check the GPU vendor’s compatibility notes. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities.

If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a generic built-in display driver. Find the proper driver through the PC maker or graphics-adapter maker rather than treating the generic entry as a game-ready driver.
Use game-specific driver information carefully
Gears of War: E-Day launched for PC and Xbox platforms on October 6, 2026, according to the Xbox Wire launch announcement. NVIDIA’s GeForce Game Ready Driver 617.14 release notes dated September 22, 2026 list the game among supported titles. That is a dated NVIDIA example, not a universal recommendation or a claim that this is the newest driver for every system. AMD and Intel users should use their own official support pages to find a compatible driver for the exact adapter.

The game’s official open-beta FAQ advised beta players to update NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel drivers and install the game on an SSD. Its beta-era driver numbers—AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 610.74 or newer, and Intel 101.8864—are not current launch requirements. The FAQ’s SSD guidance was explicitly given for the beta; check current launch guidance before treating it as a launch requirement.
Before interpreting a launch or performance problem as a driver fault, compare your PC with the game’s current official PC specifications. The specifications announced by Xbox Wire are presented in an embedded image, so consult that original source rather than relying on unverified component tiers. Do not buy a GPU or SSD solely because the game is misbehaving; first check the exact hardware against the official specifications.

Retest according to the symptom
Record your GPU model, Windows version and build, and the exact symptom before deeper troubleshooting. Also note the graphics-driver version before and after updating, and whether the symptom changed. Different problems can point in different directions:
- Game will not launch: Record the point where launch fails and any error message. Compare the PC with the official specifications before concluding that the driver is responsible.
- Crashes: Note when the crash happens and whether it began after a specific update. A changed driver version is useful context, but does not by itself prove the cause.
- Stuttering or missing assets: Record where and when it occurs. The open-beta FAQ warned that mechanical hard drives were unsupported in that beta and could cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering, or crashes; verify current launch storage guidance before applying that beta statement to the released game.
- Flicker or visual artifacts: Note whether the display issue began immediately after a Windows or graphics-driver update. If it did, consider rolling back the display driver before repeatedly reinstalling drivers.
Roll back a driver if the display problem began after an update
Microsoft documents rolling back a display driver as a recovery option when a problem starts after an update. In Device Manager, open Display adapters, right-click the adapter, choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver if available. Restart afterward. Windows may not offer rollback if it has no previous driver to restore.

Advanced Shader Delivery is optional and device-specific
Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a feature-specific path for shader compilation, not a prerequisite established for every PC player. Its DirectX Developer Blog article dated October 1, 2026 lists Windows 11 24H2 or higher, supported AMD RDNA 1/2/3/3.5/4 devices with Adrenalin 26.6.1 or higher, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 devices with driver 2026.08.3 or higher. The article also says to install the Xbox PC app before downloading to experience ASD. It described Intel support as expected later that month; check current information before assuming Intel support is available.
Microsoft’s article reports an approximately 95% reduction in shader-compilation time on supported devices, comparing first-launch compilation with ASD to a typical PC without ASD. That figure concerns shader compilation, not overall game loading time or game performance, and should not be read as a guarantee for every PC.
