What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before installing a new PC game, identify your graphics card, download its matching driver from the GPU maker or your PC manufacturer, install it, and confirm the driver version afterward. A clean install is not required for every update, and a newer driver is not a guaranteed performance fix; check the game’s own system requirements as well.
1. Identify your graphics card and PC model
- In Windows, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. Note the listed graphics hardware.
- If you use a laptop or prebuilt desktop, also note the exact computer model. The manufacturer may provide a customized graphics-driver package for that system.
If the adapter name is unclear or the device is not listed as expected, check your PC maker’s support page for the system’s specifications before choosing a driver.
2. Choose the correct official driver
Use the support or download page of the GPU maker or your computer manufacturer, and select the exact hardware and supported operating system. Intel advises checking the computer manufacturer first where customized drivers may apply (Intel: Clean Installation of Intel Graphics Drivers in Windows; Intel driver installation guidance). Avoid third-party driver-download sites.
- NVIDIA: Use NVIDIA’s official driver route and select the Game Ready driver package for your graphics card when following its manual game-driver installation procedure (NVIDIA: Manually clean install the graphics driver).
- AMD Radeon: AMD’s installer supports automatic hardware detection or manual product selection (AMD: Install AMD Radeon Software on Windows). AMD distinguishes Recommended releases, which it says are internally quality-assessed and WHQL-certified, from Optional releases, which provide the latest support for new game titles and graphics products between Recommended releases (AMD: Check driver information and updates with AMD Radeon Settings). Choose according to those stated priorities rather than assuming one channel is always best.
- Intel graphics: Check your PC manufacturer’s package or use Intel’s Download Center route where appropriate (Intel: How to Install an Intel Graphics Driver in Windows 10 & Windows 11).
Driver availability and supported operating systems vary by hardware. Intel’s cited general installation guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; its clean-install instructions are labeled for Windows 10 64-bit. Follow the instructions for your specific device and operating system rather than assuming the same steps apply to every PC.

3. Install the downloaded package
- Download the package matched to your GPU, PC model where relevant, and operating system. Save your work and close applications if the installer directs you to do so.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. NVIDIA warns that Windows Update activity or open applications may interfere with its manual installation procedure (NVIDIA manual driver installation guidance).
- Use a clean install only when the vendor’s workflow calls for it or you are troubleshooting a problem. A clean install removes existing driver components; depending on the vendor, it can also reset graphics settings or clear shader cache. Intel describes clean installation as a distinct option, not a routine requirement for every update (Intel: What Is a Clean Driver Installation?; Intel clean-install directions). AMD and NVIDIA also include clean-install options in documented workflows (AMD installation instructions; NVIDIA manual installation instructions).
4. Restart and verify the installed version
Restart if the installer asks you to. NVIDIA’s manual installation instructions specifically say a reboot finalizes that installation (NVIDIA manual driver installation guidance).
After Windows starts again, check the installed driver version in Device Manager or the GPU vendor’s software and compare it with the package you selected. Intel recommends comparing the full seven-digit build number for its current version scheme (Intel: Understanding the Intel Graphics Driver Version Number). AMD Radeon Settings also displays driver information and offers an update check (AMD driver information and updates). Verification matters because Windows Update can interfere with or revert a vendor driver in some installation scenarios.

5. Then install the game—and troubleshoot separately if needed
Once the driver version is confirmed, proceed with the game installation and check the publisher’s system requirements for the game’s supported graphics hardware and operating system. Installing a driver does not guarantee a performance increase or resolve every game issue.
If a newly installed driver causes a problem, use the GPU maker’s or PC manufacturer’s supported troubleshooting or rollback guidance. Avoid repeatedly installing unrelated driver utilities, which do not establish whether the correct vendor package is installed.
