Start with the gamepad you already use comfortably, or choose an arcade stick or button-only leverless layout if that arrangement better fits how you like to move and press attacks. Before buying, check that the exact controller is supported on your platform; Bandai Namco’s compatibility list names specific devices, not every stick or Hitbox-style controller.
Which controller should you use for Tekken 8?
Choose by comfort, layout preference, and platform compatibility—not by assumed speed or competitive advantage. The official sources establish which listed controllers work and what the game’s control styles do; they do not establish that one controller makes players faster, more accurate, or better.
- Standard gamepad: A sensible starting point if its directional controls and face buttons already feel familiar.
- Arcade stick: Consider one if you prefer a joystick for movement and larger, separate buttons for attacks.
- Hitbox-style leverless controller: Consider the button-only directional layout if that is what you prefer, but verify the exact device and platform. Bandai Namco’s cited compatibility list does not confirm specific leverless models.
These are layout choices, not performance guarantees. A different layout also takes practice, so compare how it feels in your hands and during play before treating it as an upgrade.
Which controllers does Tekken 8 officially list as compatible?
Bandai Namco’s compatibility page names the following devices for each platform. The list is platform-specific; it should not be read as confirmation that every controller, adapter, or third-party model works.

| Platform | Controllers listed by Bandai Namco |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | DualSense Wireless Controller; TEKKEN 7 Arcade Stick for PlayStation 4 |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wireless Controller |
| Steam | Steam Controller; DualSense Wireless Controller; TEKKEN 7 Arcade Stick for PlayStation 4; DUALSHOCK 4; Xbox Wireless Controller |
The TEKKEN 7 Arcade Stick for PlayStation 4 is specifically listed for both PS5 and Steam. That does not establish compatibility for other arcade sticks. Check the exact model against the official TEKKEN 8 controller compatibility list before purchasing or connecting a device, particularly if it relies on an adapter.
Can you try different controls without buying a controller?
Yes. TEKKEN 8 has Arcade Style and Special Style, and players can switch between them during battle. Special Style maps recommended moves and combos to attack buttons, letting new players try assisted controls on their current hardware. It is an in-game control option, not a different controller, and it is not established as a replacement for Arcade Style for every player.

These are the publisher’s descriptions, not independent performance assessments. See the official TEKKEN 8 battle guide.

Comfort and familiarity
Ask whether your current controller lets you move and reach attack buttons comfortably. If it does, changing hardware is optional; the available evidence does not show that switching alone improves results.

Movement and attack-button arrangement
Tekken 8’s control overview identifies left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick as separate inputs, alongside combined throw inputs and controls for Heat and Rage actions. That makes button reach and the ability to press combinations useful things to consider. It does not make any one arrangement inherently superior. Review the official controls overview.
Exact platform support
Compatibility differs across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Look up the exact model for the system you play on rather than assuming that a controller supported on one platform works on another.

Time to learn a new layout
If you are curious about assisted inputs, try Special Style before replacing familiar hardware. If you move to a stick or leverless layout, expect to learn a different arrangement; choose based on whether its feel suits you, not on an unverified promise of better performance.
Event rules, if you compete in person
Check the rules for the specific event and confirm your button configuration before your match. The European Tekken Cup 2024 rules required competitors to check buttons before a match and prohibited configuration changes after it began. That requirement is specific to that 2024 competition; it should not be treated as a universal or current rule for every event.
