For a Hermes Agent installation managed from its own source checkout, the update command is hermes update. First record the installed version with hermes --version; optionally check for an available update with hermes update --check. Keep the updater’s default backup, apply the update, run hermes config check, migrate any newly introduced settings with hermes config migrate, and verify the version and gateway afterward.

What “latest version” means for your installation
Hermes does not have one universal update mechanism. The correct procedure is determined by who owns the files that run it. A Hermes-managed checkout can update itself; a Docker image, Nix profile, operating-system package, or bundled desktop application must be replaced through its own manager. Running the in-place updater against a managed filesystem can fail or leave the installation unchanged.

There is also a channel distinction. hermes update follows the branch, release channel, or update source configured for your checkout. “Latest” therefore means the newest code available on that configured source, not necessarily an unreleased development commit elsewhere. The check command reports whether your checkout is behind that source.

Safe update sequence for a managed Hermes checkout
Use this sequence when Hermes was installed as a managed source checkout and the hermes command is available in your shell.

- Record the current version. Run
hermes --versionand save the output. This gives you a precise before-and-after comparison and makes a rollback decision easier. - Check the configured source. Run
hermes update --check. This tells you whether the checkout is behind the branch or release source it is configured to follow. A result showing no update means the checkout is current for that source, even if another channel has newer code. - Keep the pre-update snapshot enabled. The updater normally snapshots runtime state before changing files. The snapshot can include pairing data, cron jobs,
config.yaml,.env, andauth.json. The command-line interface exposes--backupand--no-backup; use the default or explicitly pass--backupunless you have a documented reason not to. - Apply the update. Run
hermes update. The documented process pulls the configured code, validates critical files, installs dependencies, and reruns post-install hooks. It may ask about configuration options that did not exist in your previous version. - Check configuration. Run
hermes config check. Treat warnings and errors as part of the update, not as harmless output: a newly added option, renamed key, or invalid value can prevent a gateway from starting. - Migrate missing settings. If the check identifies options that are absent, run
hermes config migrate. Follow the interactive prompts and review the resulting configuration before starting production traffic. - Verify the result. Run
hermes --versionagain, then confirm that the gateway and any other services resume normally. If you use a messaging-platform/updatecommand instead of a shell, the documented behavior is to update and restart running gateways, causing a brief interruption.
The official Hermes documentation describes the central operation plainly: “Update to the latest version with a single command: hermes update.” That statement applies to the managed checkout path; it does not override Docker, Nix, package-manager, or desktop-app ownership.
Before you run the updater
Confirm which executable you are changing
Run hermes --version from the account and environment that normally runs Hermes. If the command resolves to a different virtual environment, container shell, or system package than the one serving your gateway, you may update one installation while the service continues using another. Check the service’s launch context before proceeding.
Check the configured channel
hermes update --check compares your checkout with its configured update source. A stable or release checkout can intentionally lag a development branch. Do not switch branches merely to obtain a newer number unless you understand the compatibility and support implications for your deployment.
Plan for a short service interruption
Updating code and dependencies can briefly stop or restart a gateway. Schedule the operation when a short messaging interruption is acceptable, and make sure you can access the host locally or through a second session if the service does not return automatically.
Do not disable the snapshot casually
The pre-update snapshot protects operational state rather than just source files. Pairings, scheduled jobs, credentials, and environment settings can be harder to reconstruct than the code itself. Use --no-backup only when storage, policy, or an already verified external backup gives you a specific reason to omit it.
What the managed updater changes
The managed process is more than a Git pull. It retrieves the configured code, validates critical files, installs or refreshes dependencies, and reruns post-install hooks. Those hooks can change the environment in ways a source-only comparison will not reveal. The updater can also prompt for settings introduced since your previous version.

Let the command finish rather than interrupting it between dependency installation and post-install work. If a prompt appears, read whether it is asking for a new configuration value, permission to preserve an existing value, or a migration choice. Afterward, inspect the output from hermes config check rather than assuming that a successful process exit means every service is ready.
Configuration checks and migration
Run the check after every code update
Use hermes config check immediately after hermes update. This catches missing options, unrecognized keys, malformed values, and other mismatches between the new code and the existing configuration. Resolve reported problems before restarting a production gateway.
Add new options interactively
Run hermes config migrate when the check or updater indicates that settings are missing. Migration adds newly supported options through an interactive flow, so have your intended behavior and credentials available. Review the generated config.yaml and any related environment entries before accepting the final result.
Be careful when moving backward
A newer release can introduce settings that an older release does not understand. If you later roll back, run hermes config check against the older code and remove or revise unrecognized options as directed. A rollback of source files without a configuration review can fail even when the earlier commit itself is sound.

A manual source install does not have the managed updater’s complete workflow. Change into the repository, activate the virtual environment used by Hermes, pull the desired branch, and reinstall the editable package with all extras:
- Change to the checkout directory with
cd /path/to/hermes-agent. - Activate that checkout’s virtual environment using the activation command appropriate to your shell.
- Pull the source with
git pull origin main. If your deployment intentionally tracks another branch, pull that configured branch instead of silently changing channels. - Reinstall the package and extras with
uv pip install -e ".[all]". - Run
hermes config check. - Run
hermes config migrateif new settings are reported. - Run
hermes --versionand restart the gateway through the service mechanism used by your installation.
The editable install matters because it refreshes the environment’s dependencies while continuing to point at the checkout you just pulled. Pulling source without reinstalling can leave the code and its dependency set out of sync.

Updating Hermes in Docker
Do not run hermes update inside a Docker container whose filesystem is managed by its image. The official behavior for that situation is to refuse the in-place update and print the image-pull approach instead. The image, not the running container, is the unit you replace.
- Identify the exact image reference and tag used by the current deployment. Record the container’s data-volume or bind-mount configuration.
- Pull the selected image with Docker, for example
docker pull image-name:tag, using the same registry and tag policy your deployment follows. - Stop and remove or replace the old container according to your compose, orchestration, or deployment procedure.
- Recreate the container from the new image while attaching the same persistent data mount. Do not create an empty mount accidentally; that can make Hermes appear unconfigured and hide the original state.
- Start the replacement and inspect its logs. Run
hermes --versioninside the new container if the image exposes the command. - Run
hermes config checkin the new container and confirm that the gateway reconnects with the preserved data.
Keeping the data mount is the Docker equivalent of keeping the managed updater’s snapshot: it preserves pairing data, scheduled jobs, configuration, and credentials outside the disposable image layer. The image tag you select also determines the update channel, so “latest” is only meaningful relative to your registry and tagging policy.

Nix owns the runtime installation, so update the flake input or profile that supplies Hermes and rebuild it. Do not edit the installed runtime in place and do not rely on hermes update to modify a Nix-managed filesystem.
- Update the flake input or profile definition that pins Hermes.
- Rebuild the configuration using the Nix command and target used by your system.
- Confirm that the rebuilt profile or generation is active.
- Run
hermes --versionandhermes config checkfrom the resulting environment. - Restart the gateway if your service manager did not restart it as part of the rebuild.
Because the pin determines the source revision, a successful rebuild does not necessarily mean you selected the newest upstream release. Review the resulting revision when channel currency matters.
Updating Hermes on Termux
For the Termux package, use the package manager rather than the source-checkout updater:
- Refresh package metadata with
pkg update. - Upgrade Hermes with
pkg upgrade hermes-agent. - Run
hermes --versionto confirm the installed package version. - Run
hermes config checkand migrate settings if the package update introduced new options. - Restart any gateway or background process that was not automatically restarted by your Termux setup.
The package repository controls which version is available. If pkg upgrade hermes-agent reports no change, Hermes is current for that repository and channel, even if a different distribution method has a newer build.

Updating packaged Windows and macOS installations
Windows
Use the same distribution channel that installed Hermes. A Windows App Installer installation is updated through Windows App Installer; a Microsoft Store installation is updated through the Store’s update flow. Avoid mixing a store package with a manually installed executable, because you can end up maintaining two separate Hermes installations.
macOS
Open the bundled Hermes application and use its Update control. The app updater handles replacement of the application bundle. After it completes, relaunch the app if requested, check the displayed version, and verify the gateway or integrations from the application’s normal status controls.
How to verify that the update really worked
- Version: Run
hermes --versionin the same environment that serves your gateway. Compare it with the value recorded before the update. - Configuration: Run
hermes config checkand resolve every reported error. A version change without a clean configuration check is not a complete update. - Persistent state: Confirm that pairings, cron jobs,
config.yaml,.env, andauth.jsonare present when your installation uses them. In Docker, verify that the original data mount is attached. - Gateway health: Confirm that the gateway process is running, reconnects to its messaging platform, and accepts a harmless test interaction.
- Logs: Look for dependency errors, authentication failures, migration warnings, or repeated restart loops. These symptoms usually identify whether the problem is code, configuration, credentials, or service ownership.
If the version command shows the old number after an apparently successful update, check the execution context first: the shell, virtual environment, container, Nix generation, or desktop package may not be the one your service uses.

If the new version causes a regression, the documented source-checkout recovery path is to identify a known-good commit or release tag, reinstall dependencies, check configuration, and restart the gateway.

- Reinstall the matching dependencies, including the editable package and extras when using a manual source install.
- Run
hermes config check. If the newer version added options that the older code rejects, remove or revise those options as required. - Restart the gateway with
hermes gateway restart. - Run
hermes --versionand perform a test interaction.
Do not assume that restoring source code also restores configuration. New keys can survive a rollback and become invalid to the older code. The configuration check is therefore a required rollback step, not an optional diagnostic.
Common failure modes and the right fix
“Update” says the filesystem is image-managed
You are running the in-place command in Docker or another image-controlled environment. Pull the replacement image and recreate the container with the existing persistent mount instead of trying to modify the image layer.

The check reports missing options
Run hermes config migrate and complete the prompts. Then rerun hermes config check until the configuration is accepted.
The gateway does not return after updating
Check the service logs, confirm the version and configuration from the service’s actual environment, and look for dependency or authentication errors. If the new code is the cause, roll back to a known-good revision, reinstall its dependencies, check configuration, and run hermes gateway restart.
A rollback reports unknown configuration keys
Those keys were likely introduced by the newer release. Remove or adjust the unrecognized options as indicated by hermes config check, then restart the gateway.
The command reports no update, but another machine has a newer build
Compare channels and installation ownership. The first machine may follow a stable release, a pinned branch, a Nix revision, a package repository, or a Docker tag that is intentionally different from the other machine’s source.
The version changed but pairings or scheduled jobs disappeared
Inspect the backup and persistent-state location. For Docker, verify the same data mount is attached; for a managed checkout, restore the updater’s snapshot only after stopping the service and preserving the current state for diagnosis.
Choosing the right update path
When you have more than one way to install Hermes, decide using four questions:

- Who owns the files? Hermes, Docker, Nix, Termux, Windows, or macOS should be the component that performs the update.
- Which channel do you intend to follow? Stable and release sources can differ from a configured development branch, package repository, flake pin, or image tag.
- Can the installation change in place? Managed source checkouts can; images and Nix generations are replaced or rebuilt.
- Will configuration or services need attention? Run the configuration check after every code update, migrate new settings when needed, and verify or restart the gateway.
For the ordinary managed checkout, the shortest reliable recipe remains: hermes --version, optional hermes update --check, hermes update, hermes config check, optional hermes config migrate, and a final version and gateway check. Use the installation-specific procedures above whenever another tool owns the runtime.
