What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You can update Apache, PHP, and MySQL or MariaDB safely without cPanel by working over SSH with your VPS distribution’s package manager, taking a restorable backup first, and verifying each service after the transaction. On Ubuntu or Debian, the normal sequence is sudo apt update, review apt list --upgradable, then sudo apt upgrade. AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and other RHEL-family systems use dnf and different package and service names.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The safest approach treats routine security and minor updates differently from major PHP or database migrations. Record the current state, keep the provider console available, test the application—not just the daemons—and have a snapshot and database restore procedure ready before you change production packages.

What a LAMP update changes
LAMP is a Linux operating system running Apache HTTP Server, MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. Without a control panel, those components are managed directly through SSH, the operating system’s repositories, systemd services, configuration files, and application-specific deployment steps.
A normal package upgrade usually applies security fixes, bug fixes, and compatible minor releases. A major PHP release, a major MySQL or MariaDB release, or a switch between vendor repositories is a migration. It can remove deprecated PHP behavior, change defaults, require a database upgrade step, or invalidate extensions. Do not treat a major-version jump as an ordinary unattended update.

Pre-flight checks before touching packages
Do these checks from a root shell or an account with working sudo. Keep an open SSH session and the VPS provider’s out-of-band console available. The console is your recovery path if a firewall, SSH configuration, kernel reboot, or web-service failure cuts off normal access.
Identify the operating system and repositories
First establish which package manager and package names apply:
cat /etc/os-release
# Debian-family repository files
ls -la /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ 2>/dev/null
# RHEL-family repository inventory
sudo dnf repolist
Ubuntu and Debian use APT. AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and other RHEL-family images use DNF. Repository files determine which PHP and database versions are available, so do not mix commands or repositories from another distribution.
Confirm access, capacity, and a maintenance window
- Verify a root or sudo path and test the provider console before the maintenance window.
- Check free disk space and inodes; package extraction, database logs, and snapshots can temporarily need more space than the installed software.
- For a production site, announce a maintenance window if a restart, reboot, schema change, or application migration may be required.
- Make sure you can reach DNS, package mirrors, and your monitoring or health-check endpoint from the VPS.
Record versions and the running layout
Save the current versions and identify whether PHP runs as an Apache module or through PHP-FPM:
apache2 -v 2>/dev/null || httpd -v
php -v
mysql --version 2>/dev/null || mariadb --version
php -m
systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -E 'php.*fpm|apache2|httpd|mysql|mariadb'
Also record enabled Apache virtual hosts and modules, PHP configuration locations, active PHP-FPM pools, TLS settings, cron jobs, queue workers, and the application’s supported PHP and database versions. A package can install successfully while the site fails because an extension, module, pool, or scheduled worker was omitted.
Back up in a way you can restore
Take a provider snapshot or another tested filesystem backup, and make a separate logical database dump. Use a least-privilege database account for application exports rather than relying on the privileged database root account. A backup is useful only if you know where it is stored and have verified that restoration works.
# Example shape; substitute your database name and backup destination
mysqldump --single-transaction --routines --triggers your_database > your_database.sql
For MariaDB, use the corresponding client utilities available on the server. Before a major database upgrade, retain both the logical dump and the provider snapshot. Rehearse restoration on a separate instance when the application is important enough that downtime or data loss is unacceptable.
Ubuntu and Debian: the safe APT workflow
APT is the recommended command-line tool for Debian packages. Refreshing repository metadata and upgrading installed packages are separate operations. The first downloads current package indexes; the second proposes and installs package changes after you review them.

-
Refresh package indexes:
sudo apt update -
List packages with available upgrades:
apt list --upgradable -
Apply the reviewed upgrades:
sudo apt upgrade
Read the proposed package list, removals, dependency changes, and configuration-file prompts. Do not blindly accept a new configuration file when you have locally customized a virtual host, TLS policy, PHP setting, or database configuration. Preserve the working file unless you have compared the vendor version and deliberately merged the changes.
For scripts and automation, use the non-interactive-oriented apt-get interface rather than the human-facing apt command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Automation should still have an explicit policy for configuration prompts, held packages, reboots, maintenance windows, and failure notifications. A command that completes with an exit code of zero does not prove that the application is healthy.
2. Target LAMP packages only when that is intentional
After reviewing available changes, you can request upgrades for the LAMP components:
sudo apt install --only-upgrade apache2 php* mariadb-server mariadb-client
The wildcard and package names are distribution-dependent. On some releases the database packages are named for MySQL, and PHP extensions may be versioned or split into separate packages. Resolve held packages and dependency changes deliberately. If the command proposes removing an application-critical package or changing a major version, stop and plan that migration instead of forcing the transaction.
3. Handle held packages and configuration prompts carefully
Inspect packages that are intentionally held before you assume an incomplete upgrade is an error. A hold may protect a major-version boundary or a local compatibility requirement. Conversely, an accidental hold can leave a security fix unapplied. Review the package manager’s exact message, then remove or retain the hold as an explicit decision.

Verify Apache after the package transaction
Ubuntu installs Apache as apache2 and keeps its configuration under /etc/apache2/. RHEL-family systems call the package and service httpd. Verify the syntax before you interrupt a running web server:

sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl --no-pager --full status apache2
sudo journalctl -u apache2 -n 100 --no-pager
The expected syntax result is Syntax OK. If configuration permits, prefer a reload so existing connections are disrupted as little as possible. Restart only when the package or changed configuration requires it:
sudo systemctl reload apache2
# Use restart when a reload is insufficient
sudo systemctl restart apache2
Check every enabled virtual host, certificate path, proxy or rewrite module, and application error log. Request the site over HTTPS and test more than the home page: an authenticated page, a representative PHP route, a form submission, and any upload or API endpoint that matters to the application.
Verify PHP and PHP-FPM
PHP can run inside Apache or behind PHP-FPM. The correct restart target depends on that architecture, so identify the active SAPI and service before restarting anything.
php -v
php -m
systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -E 'php.*fpm|apache2|httpd'
After the upgrade, exercise the actual web SAPI rather than relying only on the command-line version. A CLI binary may use a different php.ini and extension set from PHP-FPM or Apache’s module.
- Open a page that executes the application’s normal PHP code path.
- Confirm required extensions such as database drivers, image processing, internationalization, and compression are still loaded.
- Check upload-size, memory, execution-time, and post-size limits against the application’s requirements.
- Run scheduled commands, queue workers, and background jobs that invoke PHP.
- Inspect PHP-FPM and application logs for deprecation notices, fatal errors, and permission failures.
A major PHP version can remove deprecated features or alter defaults. Use the application’s supported-version matrix, stage the change where possible, and update incompatible code or extensions before production. Do not infer compatibility from a successful package installation.
Verify MySQL or MariaDB
Debian guidance commonly uses MariaDB as a MySQL replacement. Applications should connect with a separate database account whose privileges match the application, not with the privileged root account.
Recommended Free Tools
sudo systemctl status mariadb
# Some installations use the mysql service name instead
sudo systemctl status mysql
sudo mariadb-check --all-databases
sudo journalctl -u mariadb -n 100 --no-pager
Use the check utility provided by your installed server and review its output for table or metadata problems. Confirm that the application can connect, read, write, run migrations if scheduled, and complete a representative transaction.
Before a major database upgrade, read the vendor’s notes for the exact source and target versions. Take the logical dump and provider snapshot described earlier, and rehearse restoration. Do not casually mix MySQL and MariaDB repositories: choose one supported channel, keep its signing keys current, and maintain a clear record of which server and client packages are installed.

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and other RHEL-family VPSs
RHEL-family distributions use DNF and different package, service, path, and module-stream conventions. Translate the procedure instead of pasting Ubuntu commands.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Review and apply available updates
sudo dnf check-update
sudo dnf upgrade
dnf check-update can return a nonzero status when updates are available; that is normal and should not be treated automatically as a repository failure. Review the transaction, especially package removals and module-stream changes, before confirming.
Install or target the corresponding LAMP packages
sudo dnf install httpd mariadb-server php php-fpm php-mysqlnd
Here Apache is httpd, and the MySQL-compatible PHP driver is commonly php-mysqlnd rather than Debian’s php-mysql. Exact package availability depends on enabled repositories and module streams.
Restart and inspect the RHEL-family services
sudo systemctl restart httpd
sudo systemctl restart php-fpm
sudo systemctl restart mariadb
sudo systemctl --no-pager --full status httpd php-fpm mariadb
sudo journalctl -u httpd -n 100 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u php-fpm -n 100 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u mariadb -n 100 --no-pager
Run the appropriate Apache syntax test, verify SELinux and firewall policy where enabled, and inspect configuration under the paths used by that distribution. A service that is active under systemd can still be unusable if SELinux denies file access or the firewall blocks the listener.
Routine updates versus major-version migrations
Use this decision boundary before approving a transaction:
| Decision | Typical action | Required preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Security or compatible minor update from the distribution repository | Review the package list, apply with APT or DNF, then verify services and the application | Current backup, console access, maintenance and reboot plan |
| Major PHP version change | Stage the new version, extensions, configuration, and application code before production | Supported-version matrix, compatibility testing, rollback copy, worker and cron review |
| Major MySQL or MariaDB change | Follow the vendor’s source-to-target upgrade procedure | Logical dump, provider snapshot, restoration rehearsal, downtime plan |
| Repository or database-family switch | Choose one supported channel and migrate deliberately | Repository-key review, package inventory, data backup, tested rollback |
Never add a third-party repository simply to obtain a newer version without checking whether it supports your operating-system release and whether its packages can coexist with the distribution’s Apache, PHP, and database packages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Post-update verification checklist
Run these checks after every package transaction, even when no reboot was requested:
- Check
systemctl statusfor Apache orhttpd, PHP-FPM when used, and MySQL or MariaDB. - Run the web-server configuration test and inspect recent service logs.
- Request a health endpoint and a representative authenticated page over the normal HTTPS hostname.
- Test database reads and writes, login or session handling, uploads, forms, queues, cron jobs, and other critical background work.
- Compare enabled Apache modules, virtual-host files, PHP extensions, PHP-FPM pools, and database users with the pre-update record.
- Check monitoring, TLS expiration, disk space, and error rates for several minutes after the change.
Testing only php -v or an HTTP 200 response is insufficient. A cached static page can return successfully while PHP, database credentials, uploads, or workers are broken.

Failure recovery and rollback
If SSH or the web service fails
Use the provider console rather than repeatedly changing packages over a broken SSH connection. Preserve service logs and the package manager’s transaction output before attempting a fix. Check network and firewall rules, disk space, systemd status, and the syntax of the changed configuration.
If a configuration change caused the outage
Restore the last known-good configuration file or merge the required directive from the package-maintainer version. Run the syntax test, then reload or restart the service. Keep the failed file and logs so you can identify the exact incompatibility instead of overwriting evidence.
If a package version caused the outage
Restore the provider snapshot when a broad rollback is safer, or revert only the offending package and configuration when you have a tested package path. Package downgrades are not always safe for databases, so use the vendor’s downgrade guidance rather than forcing an older server binary over a changed data directory.
If data or schema compatibility is involved
Stop the application if continuing writes could worsen the problem. Restore the database from the verified logical backup or snapshot according to your recovery plan, then restore the matching application code and configuration. Validate database integrity and application reads before reopening traffic.
Automatic security updates without losing control
Ubuntu supports unattended-upgrades for automatic updates. Its policy is configured in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades, scheduling in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades, and detailed logs in /var/log/unattended-upgrades.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAutomatic security updates can reduce exposure time, but enable them only after defining exclusions, maintenance windows, monitoring, and a reboot and console plan. Review which origins are trusted, decide whether kernel or service restarts may occur automatically, and make sure alerts reach someone who can respond. A reboot can be warranted after an update; schedule it rather than discovering it during a traffic peak.
Choosing an update approach
| Approach | Distribution | Component scope | Interruption | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual package update | Debian-family with APT or RHEL-family with DNF | Reviewed security and minor updates | Reload, restart, or reboot as required by changed components | Configuration restore, package reversal where supported, snapshot, or database restore |
| Planned major migration | Either family, following the vendor’s version path | Major PHP or database release | Maintenance window normally required | Tested application rollback plus snapshot and logical database restore |
| Unattended security updates | Ubuntu and other distributions with equivalent policy tools | Approved security origins and exclusions | Service restart or reboot policy-dependent | Predefined snapshot, package, and console recovery plan |
The right choice depends on whether you are applying a routine security fix or changing a compatibility boundary. Manual, reviewed updates remain the clearest option for a single production VPS; automation is appropriate only when its exclusions, monitoring, and recovery path are already tested.
