Update the Xbox app on Windows 11
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Allow Microsoft Store to download and install any available Xbox update.
- Reopen the Xbox app.
This is Microsoft’s current Windows 11 procedure for updating Store apps. The Xbox app may not appear separately if it is already current. Microsoft’s Store update instructions provide the current menu path.

Update the Xbox app on Windows 10
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select See more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates.
- Relaunch Xbox after the download and installation finish.
The labels are different because Windows 10 uses an older Microsoft Store layout. Do not use the Windows 11 Library path if your Store still shows Downloads and updates.

Automatic updates are convenient, but they may be delayed by Store problems, sign-in issues, network restrictions, paused downloads, or a Windows update that requires a restart. Turning the setting on does not guarantee that an update installs immediately. See Microsoft’s automatic app-update guidance.
If “Get updates” does nothing
Follow these steps in order, starting with the least disruptive option:
- Close and reopen Microsoft Store.
- Close and reopen the Xbox app.
- Restart the PC.
- Install any pending Windows updates.
- Run Library > Get updates again in Microsoft Store.
- Repair the Xbox app.
- Reset the Xbox app if Repair does not help.
- Reinstall Xbox from Microsoft Store as a final app-level step.
Microsoft recommends closing and reopening Store apps, updating Windows and Microsoft Store, then repairing, resetting, or reinstalling the affected app when necessary. Review Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting sequence.
Check Windows Update before trying again
Windows Update and Microsoft Store app updates are separate processes. Updating Windows does not necessarily update Xbox, but a pending Windows update can prevent Store apps from installing correctly.
On Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install available updates, restart the PC, and then run the Store update again.

Verify the Microsoft account
Make sure Microsoft Store is signed in with the account that owns or installed the Xbox app. An account mismatch can affect whether the app appears, updates, or installs. Also check that you are online and have enough free disk space.
Repair or reset the Xbox app
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox.
- Select the three-dot menu next to it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
Repair attempts to fix the installation without removing the app’s data. If Xbox still will not open or update, return to the same screen and select Reset.
Reset is more disruptive. It may clear locally stored app data, reset settings, and require you to sign in again. It is a recovery step, not a guarantee that every Xbox, Gaming Services, or game-installation problem will be fixed. Microsoft documents this general Windows app repair and reset path in its repair and reset guidance.
Reset Microsoft Store with wsreset.exe
If Microsoft Store is stuck, refuses to download the update, or behaves as though its data is corrupted, reset the Store cache:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
wsreset.exe
- Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically, normally after about 10 seconds.
- Return to Library > Get updates, or use the Windows 10 equivalent, and try again.
wsreset.exe resets the Microsoft Store cache; it is not a direct Xbox-app updater and does not repair all Xbox dependencies. Microsoft describes the expected blank window and Store relaunch in its Store download troubleshooting instructions.

Reinstall the Xbox app
Reinstalling is best treated as a later step after restarting, updating Windows, repairing, resetting, and clearing the Store cache. Open Microsoft Store, search for the official Xbox app, and install it from there. Avoid unofficial installers, download mirrors, registry edits, PowerShell removal scripts, and third-party “driver updater” utilities.
The Xbox app, Microsoft Store games, and game files can be managed separately depending on the title and installation method, so do not assume that reinstalling the app has one universal effect on every installed game. If you are concerned about a particular game library, check its installation location and account before removing anything.
If Microsoft Store is missing
Search for Microsoft Store from the Start menu first. It may simply have been unpinned from Start or the taskbar.
If it does not appear, possible explanations include:
- You are using a local Windows account rather than signing in with a Microsoft account.
- The PC is managed by a workplace or school and Microsoft Store is disabled by an administrator.
- Family or organizational settings restrict Store access.
Do not download an Xbox installer from an unofficial website. On a managed PC, contact the administrator. Microsoft’s guidance for a missing Microsoft Store app covers account and device-management limitations.

If Xbox is not listed in Microsoft Store
An absent or unavailable listing does not necessarily mean the app has been permanently removed. Check these possibilities:
- Microsoft Store is signed into the wrong Microsoft account.
- The app is unavailable in your region.
- Your Windows installation or device is incompatible.
- Microsoft Store data is corrupted.
- The PC recently installed Windows updates and needs a restart.
- Family settings or organizational policy restrict the app.
These are possibilities rather than a single universal cause. Microsoft identifies account authorization, region availability, family settings, compatibility, pending restarts, and app availability as reasons an app may not appear or install. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for missing or unavailable Store apps.
How to confirm the Xbox update worked
There is no universal version-number location that can be relied on across every Xbox app interface revision. Use these practical checks instead:
- The Xbox app opens without the previous “update required” message.
- Microsoft Store no longer shows Xbox as having a pending update.
- Library > Get updates completes without offering another Xbox update.
- The Xbox entry under Settings > Apps > Installed apps shows recent modification or version information, if your Windows build displays it.
When the problem is not an Xbox app update
Updating Xbox will not necessarily fix every problem involving Xbox games or Game Pass. Identify the symptom before escalating:
Recommended Free Tools
- Game installation failure: check Store sign-in, disk space, Windows updates, and the game’s installation location.
- Gaming Services errors: treat this as a separate dependency problem rather than assuming the Xbox app itself is out of date.
- Account or subscription problems: verify the Microsoft account, Game Pass subscription, and entitlement.
- Service outage: check official Xbox or Microsoft service-status information instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app.
- Managed or incompatible PC: contact the administrator or check official Microsoft compatibility guidance.
If Microsoft Store remains unavailable, the device is managed, or the same installation error persists after the steps above, stop repeating reinstalls and use official Microsoft or Xbox Support. The exact cause may require account, licensing, policy, or service-side investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update the Xbox app from inside Xbox?
Usually, no. The normal update route for the Xbox PC app is Microsoft Store: use Library > Get updates on Windows 11, or See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates on Windows 10.
Does Windows Update update the Xbox app?
Not necessarily. Windows Update and Microsoft Store app updates are separate, although pending Windows updates or a required restart can prevent the Xbox update from installing.
Will resetting Xbox delete my games?
Do not assume either outcome universally. Reset can clear local app data and settings, while game files may be managed separately depending on the title and installation method. Expect to sign in again and verify important installations first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line
For most PCs, update Xbox through Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. If that fails, restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, repair Xbox, reset it if necessary, and use wsreset.exe when Microsoft Store itself is stuck. Reinstall only after the less disruptive fixes, and use official Microsoft sources rather than unofficial installers.
