How to Update Your Motherboard BIOS Before Installing a New Intel CPU

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update the motherboard BIOS before you install a newer Intel desktop processor whenever the board’s CPU-support list requires a newer firmware version. Intel says many 600- and 700-series boards need a BIOS update to boot 13th- and 14th-generation Core desktop CPUs, and recommends updating while the existing, supported processor is still installed. If the firmware lacks support, the computer may fail to boot or show no display.

The safe order is: identify the exact motherboard and processor, confirm the minimum BIOS version, flash the correct file using the board’s documented method, verify that the updated system posts, then replace the CPU. A CPU-less feature such as ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack or MSI Flash BIOS Button is useful only when your particular board includes it.

Why BIOS support determines whether a new Intel CPU will start

A compatible socket does not guarantee a working upgrade. The motherboard firmware must contain the microcode, initialization routines and platform support needed by the processor. Intel’s guidance for 600- and 700-series desktop boards covers upgrades involving 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation Core processors. Depending on the board and processor combination, the required package can include a BIOS, other firmware, or Intel Converged Security and Management Engine (CSME) components.

Intel’s support article, reviewed February 5, 2026, states: “Intel recommends that you update the BIOS on systems for compatibility before updating your Intel® Core™ desktop processors.” Intel also warns that an unsupported processor can leave the system unable to boot or display video. The exact minimum BIOS is not universal: it is specific to the motherboard model, board revision where applicable, and CPU model.

What the 600- and 700-series warning means

Situation What the guidance establishes
600- or 700-series motherboard with a 13th-generation Core desktop CPU A BIOS update may be required before the processor will boot.
600- or 700-series motherboard with a 14th-generation Core desktop CPU A BIOS update may be required before the processor will boot.
Upgrade involving 12th-, 13th- or 14th-generation Core desktop processors Intel advises checking motherboard firmware, BIOS and CSME requirements before changing CPUs.

“May be required” is deliberate. Some boards shipped with a sufficiently new firmware, while others need a particular release. Treat the manufacturer’s CPU Support list and BIOS download page as the authority for your exact board.

Collect the exact hardware details first

Write down the information below before downloading anything. A similar product name is not enough; a file for another model or revision can make the board unusable.

Verify the minimum BIOS version on the motherboard’s support page

Open the official support page for the board and locate both the CPU Support (or compatibility) list and the BIOS download section. Find the exact target processor in the list and note the minimum BIOS version shown for it. MSI’s CPU-upgrade guidance specifically says to verify that both the motherboard and BIOS support the processor before installation.

Check more than the version number

  • Confirm the board model and revision displayed by the support page match the hardware in your case.
  • Read the release notes for BIOS, firmware or CSME prerequisites. Intel’s 600/700-series guidance notes that one or more of these components may be required for 13th- or 14th-generation upgrades.
  • Check whether the target CPU appears as supported at all. If it is absent, do not assume a newer file will add support.
  • Read the vendor’s notes for required update order, file-renaming utilities, USB-port restrictions and power conditions.

Download only the file published for that exact board. Never substitute a file from a visually similar model, a different revision or another manufacturer.

Choose the update method

There are two fundamentally different paths. Use the normal UEFI utility when the current CPU can start the computer. Use a CPU-less flash feature only when the board supports it and the current firmware cannot boot the new processor.

Update from a working system with the old CPU installed

This is the simplest and least ambiguous method. ASUS advises updating to the latest BIOS with the old supported CPU, then installing the new CPU. Intel likewise recommends updating before changing processors.

  1. Confirm support. Recheck the target CPU’s minimum BIOS entry and any BIOS, firmware or CSME notes.
  2. Download the correct file. From the board’s official support page, download the BIOS release that meets the target CPU requirement. Keep the original archive until the vendor’s instructions tell you how to extract it.
  3. Read the update instructions. Note the required file extension, whether the file must be renamed, which UEFI utility to open, and any warnings about power or update order.
  4. Prepare the media or local file path. Use the storage method specified by the vendor. If the utility supports an internal drive, select the location it documents; if it requires USB media, prepare the drive according to the model-specific rules.
  5. Enter UEFI. Restart the computer and use the motherboard’s documented key to open setup. Do not begin the flash from an operating-system update tool unless the manufacturer explicitly directs you to do so.
  6. Open the vendor utility. Select the board’s normal BIOS update function, choose the downloaded file and confirm the displayed model and version before accepting.
  7. Let the process finish. Do not press reset, turn off the power, disconnect the drive or interrupt reboots while the firmware is being written. The vendor may show a progress bar, restart more than once or temporarily display no image.
  8. Verify a successful post. Enter UEFI after the restart and confirm the new BIOS version. Allow the system to boot normally once with the existing CPU before beginning the hardware swap.
  9. Record settings. Save notes or photographs of memory profiles, boot mode, fan curves and storage settings. A firmware update can reset settings, although the retrieved vendor guidance does not establish a universal reset behavior.

There is no universal update duration or success-rate figure published in the cited official guidance. Follow the on-screen status and the motherboard manual rather than assuming a particular number of minutes.

Update without the new CPU when the board supports it

If the target processor cannot boot the board on its current firmware, look for a clearly labeled USB BIOS FlashBack, Flash BIOS Button, Q-Flash Plus or equivalent feature in the manual and on the rear I/O panel. The feature must be listed for your exact model.

USB preparation

ASUS states that you should download the BIOS file corresponding to the motherboard model and save it to a USB flash drive. Formatting, filename, USB-port and capacity requirements vary by model, so use the instructions for that board rather than a generic USB recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a drive that the manual supports and format it exactly as instructed.
  • Extract the downloaded archive if the vendor supplies a compressed package.
  • Apply the required filename change. Some boards provide a renaming utility; others specify a particular name in the manual.
  • Place the file where the procedure expects it, commonly the drive’s top level if the manual says so.
  • Use the specifically marked BIOS or FlashBack USB port. Other ports may not be wired for the function.

ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack

  1. Download the BIOS file matching the exact ASUS motherboard model and save it to the required USB drive.
  2. Apply ASUS’s specified filename rule if the support instructions require renaming.
  3. Shut the computer down while leaving the motherboard connected to the power supply, as ASUS’s FlashBack guidance directs.
  4. Insert the prepared drive into the labeled FlashBack USB port.
  5. Press the FlashBack button and watch the status indicator described in the manual.
  6. Do not remove power or the USB drive until the indicator shows completion according to the board’s instructions.
  7. After the board finishes and powers down or restarts as documented, remove the drive, install the supported CPU and attempt the first post.

MSI Flash BIOS Button

  1. Confirm that your exact MSI board lists the Flash BIOS Button feature.
  2. Prepare the matching BIOS file and any required filename using MSI’s instructions.
  3. Connect the power leads required by the manual, then insert the drive into the designated Flash BIOS USB port.
  4. Press the Flash BIOS Button. MSI documents that supported models can perform this operation without a CPU and RAM.
  5. Observe the board’s status light and wait for the documented completion pattern. Do not interrupt power while the light indicates activity.
  6. When the update is complete, install the processor and memory as described in the hardware manuals, then test the system.

Button names, required power connectors, status-light behavior and whether memory must be removed differ by model. The manual controls these details; a procedure from another board is not a safe substitute.

Install the new Intel CPU after the update

  1. Shut down after the updated firmware has successfully posted with the old CPU, or after a supported CPU-less flash has completed.
  2. Switch off the power supply and disconnect the AC cable. Follow the motherboard and processor manuals for static-safety and socket handling.
  3. Remove the cooler, clean and prepare the contact surfaces as directed by the cooler and CPU instructions, and release the socket retention mechanism.
  4. Align the processor’s triangle or other orientation mark with the socket mark. Do not force it or slide it across the contacts.
  5. Secure the retention mechanism and install the cooler with the mounting pressure and thermal-interface method specified by its instructions.
  6. Reconnect the CPU-fan lead and any other cables removed during the swap.
  7. Power on and enter UEFI. Confirm that the processor model and updated BIOS version are detected.
  8. Review boot mode, memory profile, fan settings and storage configuration before loading the operating system. Reapply only settings you understand and have recorded.
  9. Save changes and boot the operating system. Check temperatures, fan operation and device detection before returning the system to normal use.

What to do when the computer will not post

No display immediately after installing the CPU

  • Power off and verify that the BIOS version actually meets the target CPU’s minimum requirement.
  • Confirm the processor is fully seated, the socket latch is closed and the cooler is connected to the CPU-fan header.
  • Check the motherboard’s diagnostic LEDs or display codes against its manual.
  • Clear or load UEFI defaults only through the documented procedure, then recheck boot and memory settings.
  • If the firmware was never updated, reinstall the old supported CPU and perform the normal UEFI update, or use the board’s documented CPU-less feature.

The flash utility rejects the file

  • Recheck the complete model name and board revision.
  • Download the file again from the official support page and extract it as instructed.
  • Verify the required filename, USB format, capacity limits and designated port.
  • Do not rename a file arbitrarily or use a BIOS from another model.

The status light never completes

  • Leave power connected exactly as the manual requires, but do not continue indefinitely without checking the documented indicator pattern.
  • Try the specified USB port and a drive that meets the model’s requirements.
  • Confirm that the file is the matching release and has the required name.
  • If the board still fails, stop repeating flashes and contact the manufacturer’s support service with the model, revision and observed light pattern.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Updating only because the socket matches. Firmware support is model- and CPU-specific.
  • Installing the new processor first. If it is unsupported by the current BIOS, you may get no boot or display and lose access to the normal update utility.
  • Using a file for a near-identical board. Similar names and layouts do not make firmware interchangeable.
  • Assuming every board has FlashBack. ASUS USB BIOS FlashBack, MSI Flash BIOS Button and equivalent features are limited to supported models.
  • Interrupting the write. Do not reset, unplug or remove the USB drive while the board is flashing.
  • Forgetting settings after the update. Have your boot mode, memory, fan and storage configuration recorded before starting.

Final checklist

  • Exact motherboard model and revision recorded.
  • Current BIOS version recorded.
  • Target Intel CPU model identified precisely.
  • CPU Support list confirms the target processor.
  • Minimum BIOS version and any BIOS, firmware or CSME prerequisites checked.
  • Correct file downloaded from the motherboard manufacturer.
  • Normal UEFI update completed with the old supported CPU, or the board’s documented CPU-less method selected.
  • System posted successfully after the update.
  • Power disconnected before the physical CPU replacement.
  • UEFI settings reviewed after the new processor was installed.
