If you have moved to another country or region for the long term, change both your Xbox console location and the country or region on your Microsoft account. Then review billing, subscriptions and digital content before buying anything. Microsoft warns that account funds do not move between regions and that games, apps, movies, Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass obtained in one region may not work in another.
Decide whether a region change is appropriate
Microsoft recommends changing your Xbox region for a long-term move, not for a short trip or a temporary attempt to access another market. The setting affects the storefront and services attached to your console and account. A holiday, business trip or brief stay normally does not justify migrating your profile.

There are two separate settings to update:
- Console location: the country or region selected in Xbox system settings. This controls the console’s local storefront and regional behavior.
- Microsoft-account profile: the country or region recorded on your account’s personal-information page. This affects account billing and the locale used when you purchase.
For a move to work as expected, update both. Changing only the console setting can leave your account billing profile in the old market; changing only the account profile can leave the console using the previous location.
Prepare before changing countries
Complete these checks before you confirm the move. They prevent the most common blocked changes and reduce the risk of leaving money or services behind.

- Spend your Microsoft-account balance. Microsoft says, “The funds in your Microsoft account will not move with you.” It cannot transfer money between regions, so use the balance before changing location.
- Review subscriptions. Check Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass, along with any other recurring services attached to the account. Region changes can affect their operation and availability.
- Review purchased content. Apps, games and movies obtained in one region might not work in another. Do not assume that every item in your library will be available after migration.
- Check account status. A suspension, including one caused by an expired subscription card or an unpaid balance, can block the change.
- Check the last region change. Microsoft lists a change made within the previous three months as a reason the next change may be refused.
- Check age eligibility. A person who is a legal minor in one region but not the other may be prevented from changing countries.
- Have local payment details ready. At the first purchase in the new locale, Microsoft prompts you to update billing information. A credit card and billing address for the new country may be required, especially on Xbox 360.
Change the location on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
The same location procedure applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. You must be signed in to the profile whose console settings you want to change.
- Sign in on the Xbox console.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location.
- Under Location, select the new country or region.
- If necessary, change System language or Language region to match the new location. These are separate choices from the country or region itself.
- Select Restart now.
The restart is part of the procedure, not an optional cleanup step. Microsoft’s instruction is to update the settings to the new country or region and then restart the Xbox console. Until the restart completes, the console may continue using the previous regional configuration.
Update the country or region on your Microsoft account
After changing the console, update the account profile through the Microsoft account dashboard. This step is separate from the Xbox system menu.

- Open Your info.
- Select Edit profile info.
- Choose the new Country or region.
- Save the profile change if the page requests confirmation.
Microsoft says the first purchase in the new locale prompts you to update billing information. Be prepared to enter payment details and a billing address that belong to the new country or region. Updating the profile does not transfer the old account balance, so spend that balance before this step.

What happens to money, subscriptions and digital purchases?
Microsoft-account balance
Your balance remains associated with the original region. Microsoft explicitly states that funds will not move with you and cannot be transferred between regions. This is why spending the balance is a pre-change task rather than something to handle afterward.
Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass
Microsoft identifies Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass as services that can be affected by a region change. The practical result can depend on the service and the two markets involved, so review each subscription after the move rather than assuming its previous arrangement will continue unchanged.
Games, apps and movies
Digital items obtained in one region may not work in another. Microsoft includes apps, games and movies in this warning. Regional licensing and storefront availability can differ, so a title that was obtainable in the old market may not be obtainable or usable in the new one.

When you make your first purchase after changing the account locale, Microsoft prompts you to update billing information. This is expected behavior. If the prompt does not appear, verify that the account profile and console location both show the new country before troubleshooting payment details.

Xbox One and Series compared with Xbox 360
Do not use the Xbox One and Series menu path on an Xbox 360. The older console uses a profile migration process and has different billing prerequisites.

Move an Xbox 360 profile to the new country
Xbox 360 does not provide the simple location switch used by newer consoles. Microsoft describes the process as migrating the Xbox profile, which may affect subscriptions and services.
- Sign in to the Xbox 360 profile you want to move.
- Add a credit card issued for the new country.
- Enter a billing address in the new country.
- Open Settings > System > Console Settings > Language and Locale > Locale.
- Select the new country or region and complete the prompts shown by the console.
Because profile migration can affect subscriptions and services, check those services after the move. The Xbox 360 procedure is not a workaround for a blocked account; the same account-status, timing and age restrictions can still apply.
Why a region change may be blocked
If Microsoft refuses the change, check each of these conditions rather than repeatedly submitting the request:

The account changed regions within the last three months
Microsoft lists a region change made during the previous three months as a blocking condition. Wait until that restriction no longer applies before attempting another move.
The account is suspended or has money due
An account can be blocked when it is suspended, including suspension related to an expired subscription card or a balance due. Resolve the account issue first; changing the console location cannot clear a billing or enforcement problem.
The account’s legal-minor status differs between regions
Microsoft also lists cases in which the user is a legal minor in one region but not the other. Regional age rules can therefore prevent migration even when the console and payment details are correct.

You are trying to fix a backward-compatibility error
Microsoft states that changing region does not fix backward-compatibility errors. If an older game fails because of compatibility, changing country or region is the wrong remedy and can create separate account and content complications.

Verify the move after the restart
Once the console restarts, check the result in a deliberate order:
- Open Settings > System > Language & location and confirm that Location shows the new country or region.
- Confirm that the system language and language region are what you intended; they are independent settings.
- Open the Microsoft account dashboard and check Your info > Edit profile info for the new country or region.
- Review Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass and other subscriptions for their current status.
- Check the Microsoft-account balance before attempting a purchase. Any amount left from the old region will not transfer.
- When you are ready to buy, use the new-country billing details requested at checkout.
- For important games, apps or movies, verify availability and operation individually because Microsoft warns that content obtained in one region may not work in another.
Common move scenarios
Moving permanently from one country to another
Use the complete process: spend the old balance, review subscriptions and content, change the console location, restart, update the Microsoft account profile and provide new billing information at the first purchase.
Visiting another country temporarily
Do not change the region solely for a short visit. Microsoft recommends the change for a long-term move, and a temporary switch can expose your balance, subscriptions and digital purchases to the regional restrictions described above.

Changing region to solve one game error
First identify whether the problem is a backward-compatibility error. Microsoft says a region change will not resolve that class of problem, so migrating the account would add risk without addressing the cause.
Moving with an Xbox 360
Use the Xbox 360 migration route, including the new-country credit card and billing address. The Xbox One and Series location menu does not replace the Xbox 360 profile-migration process.
