Yes, you can upgrade a Debian 12 Bookworm installation to Debian 13 Trixie in place, but only after you make a recoverable backup, finish updating Bookworm, remove repository conflicts, and convert every Debian archive entry consistently. The supported path is an interactive APT upgrade from a current, essentially pure Bookworm system. Debian 13 was released on 9 August 2025, and the release notes were updated on 23 August 2026.

Plan for service interruptions and a reboot: the Trixie transaction replaces the kernel, and packages may stop services while they are unpacked and configured. The procedure below gives you checkpoints so you can stop before changing APT sources, recover from a failed transaction, and verify the machine before putting applications back into service.

Confirm that your machine is an eligible starting point

Debian’s documented procedure is written for a “pure” Debian system running Debian 12 Bookworm. Do not begin with a mixed Bookworm/Trixie installation or with unresolved package operations. Check the installed release first:

cat /etc/debian_version

The result must identify Debian 12 Bookworm. Upgrades from other releases are outside this procedure; use the appropriate release notes or perform a staged upgrade instead of changing suites blindly.

Bring Bookworm to its final point release

Refresh Bookworm’s metadata and complete all pending Bookworm work before editing any source file. Run these commands while the current Bookworm repositories are still enabled:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt full-upgrade

Use the prompts to resolve configuration-file and removal decisions. If an earlier transaction was interrupted, finish it before continuing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken install

Run apt interactively so you can inspect proposed removals and prompts. Debian recommends apt-get for scripts, not for an unattended release upgrade. Do not proceed while APT, aptitude, or Synaptic reports pending actions, held packages that you have not evaluated, or broken dependencies.

Make a backup you can actually restore

A package upgrade changes both data and system state. A hardware failure during the transaction can damage the installation, so keep a copy on storage that is independent of the machine and verify that you can read it. At minimum, preserve the following items:

Item Why it matters Example capture
/etc Service configuration, account policy, network settings, and repository definitions. sudo tar --xattrs --acls -czf /external/debian-etc-bookworm.tgz /etc
/var/lib/dpkg dpkg’s package database and state files. sudo tar --xattrs --acls -czf /external/dpkg-state-bookworm.tgz /var/lib/dpkg
/var/lib/apt/extended_states APT’s automatically installed/manual package markings. sudo cp -a /var/lib/apt/extended_states /external/extended_states.bookworm
Package selections A restorable record of the selected package set. dpkg --get-selections '*' | tee /external/dpkg-selections-bookworm.txt
/var/lib/aptitude/pkgstates Required if you use aptitude and want its package state preserved. sudo cp -a /var/lib/aptitude/pkgstates /external/pkgstates.bookworm

Replace /external with a mounted backup destination and confirm the archives and text file are present. Backing up, or at least unmounting, /home adds protection for user data. A backup is only useful if you know how to mount it and restore files; test reading a few archive members before the upgrade.

Remove repository and backports hazards

Third-party archives can provide packages that Trixie cannot replace cleanly. Inspect every file under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, as well as the main source file:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
grep -R --line-number --no-messages '^s*(deb|Types:)' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Disable or remove unofficial entries before the release upgrade. Save a copy of any file you may need later, then disable it by changing the filename to end in something other than .list or .sources, or by commenting the entry. Do not leave a vendor archive enabled merely because it currently works on Bookworm.

Handle Bookworm backports deliberately

Normal Bookworm-backports packages generally have an upgrade route, but Debian notes that this path is less tested than the base release. “Sloppy” Bookworm backports have no clean upgrade path and should be removed before starting. Identify packages installed from backports and decide whether to replace them with Trixie versions, remove them, or restore the original Bookworm package before changing suites. Do not carry a backports source into Trixie until the base system has completed and passed its health checks.

Convert Debian APT sources to Trixie

Before the first Trixie metadata refresh, replace Debian archive entries that name bookworm with entries for trixie, and disable the old Bookworm entries. Debian recommends consolidating modern sources in a deb822 file, normally /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources, rather than maintaining several overlapping legacy files.

Move or rename old Debian .list files after saving them for rollback. Then create a deb822 file using the mirror, components, architectures, and keyring that match your installation. This is a pattern, not a universal copy-and-paste configuration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Types: deb
URIs: https://deb.debian.org/debian
Suites: trixie trixie-updates
Components: main non-free-firmware
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

Review the current Debian release notes for your mirror and security configuration before applying the file. If you use contrib, non-free, additional architectures, or a different mirror, retain those choices consistently. The security archive normally needs its own entry and must use the Trixie security suite; do not copy a Bookworm security line unchanged.

Check for a mixed-suite configuration

After editing, search all enabled source files for both suite names:

grep -R --line-number --no-messages -E 'bookworm|trixie' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Every enabled Debian entry should now point to Trixie, including updates and security entries. Keep suites, components, architectures, and Signed-By references internally consistent. Debian’s normal path is not a permanent mixture of Bookworm and Trixie; a mixed configuration is a troubleshooting measure only when the release notes explicitly call for it.

Run the staged, interactive upgrade

Ensure filesystems needed by the package manager are mounted read-write and that you have a reliable console or remote session with an out-of-band recovery option. A long-lived terminal session is useful, but it does not remove the need to plan for a network interruption.

Record the transaction

APT and dpkg keep their own records. APT writes package history to /var/log/apt/history.log and terminal output to /var/log/apt/term.log; dpkg records state changes in /var/log/dpkg.log. Keep these logs after the upgrade if you need to diagnose a failed service or package configuration.

Refresh and perform the minimal upgrade

Run the first transaction interactively and read the proposed changes:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade --without-new-pkgs

The minimal step updates packages that can be upgraded without pulling in the full set of new dependencies. If APT proposes unexpected removals, stop and investigate the package or repository that caused them rather than accepting the plan automatically.

Complete the distribution upgrade

When the minimal upgrade completes successfully, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo apt full-upgrade

full-upgrade may install new packages, remove obsolete packages, and replace core components. Stay available for configuration-file questions. Preserve local changes when they are intentional and compare a package maintainer’s version before replacing a file that controls networking, authentication, storage, or a production service.

Do not close the session or power off while dpkg is unpacking or configuring packages. Services associated with upgraded packages can stop temporarily, and an unattended prompt can leave a service unavailable for a substantial period. There is no official universal downtime figure; duration depends on package count, storage speed, configuration prompts, and the services installed.

Reboot and verify the new system

Debian states that upgrading to Trixie includes a kernel upgrade, so a reboot is necessary. Reboot only after the package transaction reports completion and you have recorded any warnings:

cat /etc/debian_version
uname -r
sudo dpkg --audit
systemctl --failed

Then test the functions your machine provides, in an order that makes failures easy to isolate:

  • Network reachability, DNS, and any firewall or VPN dependency.
  • Storage mounts, encrypted volumes, RAID, and permissions.
  • Local and remote authentication, including administrative access.
  • Scheduled jobs, timers, log rotation, and backup tasks.
  • Application and game-server services, their ports, data directories, and automatic startup.

Inspect the journal and the service-specific logs for failed units. Do not re-enable third-party repositories or add Trixie backports until these checks pass.

Clean up only after the base system is healthy

Review redundant packages

Once services are working, ask APT for packages it considers no longer required:

sudo apt autoremove

Read the removal list carefully. Remove packages only when you understand their role, and review any configuration files left behind by packages you intentionally removed. Do not use an unconditional purge as a substitute for reviewing the list.

Modernize remaining source files

If old-style source files remain, use the APT source-modernization facility described for Trixie, review every proposed deb822 conversion, and remove duplicate entries. Keep only sources you still trust and need. When practical, update Signed-By references to Debian’s canonical .pgp keyring names; the older .gpg names are compatibility links, so changing the spelling is a cleanup step rather than a reason to interrupt a healthy system.

Add Trixie backports later

Backports are an optional post-upgrade choice. Add them only after the base Trixie system is stable, you have a current backup, and you have a specific package need. Treat each backported package as an additional dependency to track during future upgrades.

What to do when the upgrade stops

APT reports broken dependencies or held packages

Do not keep changing suites while the package database is inconsistent. Record the exact error, check for held packages and disabled repositories, and finish the current dpkg operation:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken install

Re-run apt update and inspect the proposed plan. If the only way forward requires removing an application or a locally built package, stop and restore the relevant configuration or backup rather than accepting an unexplained removal.

APT still sees Bookworm

Search every enabled .list and .sources file, including files you forgot in sources.list.d. Disable the stale entry, refresh metadata, and check the candidate versions again. Leaving one Bookworm archive enabled can produce a deceptively small but dangerous mixed-suite transaction.

A service fails after reboot

Check systemctl --failed, the unit’s journal, package configuration prompts, changed library paths, and file permissions. Restore the service’s backed-up configuration if a local edit was overwritten, then restart only after understanding the error. Keep the machine in a maintenance state until authentication, networking, storage, and dependent services are all functional.

The machine will not boot

Use local or provider recovery media, mount the installed system, copy logs and configuration files, and use the backup of /etc and dpkg state to reconstruct the previous configuration. If rollback is not practical, a fresh installation followed by restoration of data and application configuration may be faster and safer than repeatedly forcing APT through an unknown state.

In-place upgrade or fresh installation?

Debian documents the in-place APT path, but it does not prescribe one fresh-install workflow. Choose using the operational differences below:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor In-place APT upgrade Fresh installation
Backup and rollback Requires a tested backup because the existing system is changed during the transaction; the backup of configuration and package state supports recovery. Leaves the old installation available until you overwrite or repurpose its storage, but applications and data still need a verified backup.
Third-party repository complexity Every unofficial source and locally installed package must be disabled, replaced, or reconciled before the upgrade. Repositories and packages are reintroduced selectively after the new base system is installed.
Expected service downtime Services can stop during package replacement and the required kernel reboot; downtime depends on the transaction and installed services. Services remain on the old system until cutover, followed by installation, configuration, data restoration, and a planned switch.
Hardware and driver revalidation Existing hardware configuration is retained but must be checked after the new kernel and packages load. Installer and new defaults provide a clean hardware detection pass, but drivers and device rules must be configured again.
Time to restore applications and data Usually preserves installed applications and data, subject to package and configuration compatibility. Requires reinstalling applications and restoring data and service configuration before production use.

Use the in-place route when the Bookworm system is clean, recoverable, and composed mostly of Debian packages. Prefer a fresh installation when the current machine has extensive third-party software, years of manual changes, an unclear package state, or a rollback requirement that cannot tolerate an in-place transaction.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • Release: cat /etc/debian_version confirms Bookworm, and Bookworm is fully updated.
  • Package state: no pending dpkg, APT, aptitude, or Synaptic operation remains.
  • Recovery: /etc, dpkg state, APT extended states, package selections, and any aptitude state are stored off the machine; important home data is backed up.
  • Repositories: unofficial sources are disabled, sloppy Bookworm backports are removed, and every enabled Debian entry has been reviewed.
  • Sources: Debian entries consistently name Trixie, with matching components, architectures, security settings, and signing-key references.
  • Operations: filesystems are read-write, console access is available, and you have scheduled a maintenance window for service interruptions and reboot.
  • Validation: after reboot, networking, storage, authentication, jobs, and application services have all been tested before cleanup or backports.

Bottom line

A safe Bookworm-to-Trixie upgrade is controlled rather than rushed: finish Bookworm first, preserve the package and configuration state, remove repository ambiguity, convert all Debian sources together, run the two interactive APT stages, reboot for the new kernel, and validate every service before cleanup. If you cannot produce a tested backup or explain every enabled repository, postpone the upgrade or choose a fresh installation instead.
