Relics are upgraded through appraisal, not ordinary smithing. In the Dark Arisen expansion, search the Norgan region for Relics, then take them to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. Appraisal turns a Relic into a weapon or armor item that can have stronger statistics and new or refined abilities. The resulting parameters are reported as random, so there is no confirmed universal best Relic or guaranteed bonus path.
Regular equipment enhancement remains a separate system. It uses regional smithing styles—Vermundian, Battahli, Elven, Dwarven and Wyrmfire—with different offensive, defensive and weight effects. Treat those upgrades as a second decision after you have appraised a Relic, and verify live compatibility and values in your current version of the game.

What Relics are in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Relics are loot associated with the Norgan region in the Dark Arisen expansion. They are not a generic name for every material used to improve equipment, and they do not follow the same process as the base game’s standard weapon-and-armor enhancements.
You obtain a Relic in the field, have it appraised by Jiera, and receive usable gear. The broad result is a weapon or armor piece. Appraisal may raise the item’s statistics and may add a new ability or refine an existing one. A Steam-hosted Capcom announcement excerpt also describes the appraisal results as having random parameters, but it does not publish a complete randomization table or a way to force a particular roll.

That distinction explains why “upgrading a Relic” can be confusing. You are not simply paying a blacksmith to add a known number of strength points. You are first converting an unidentified or unappraised find into equipment, then deciding whether that result is better for your Arisen or a Pawn than what the party already carries.
The Relic loop, from discovery to equipped gear
- Explore Norgan. Search the expansion’s Norgan region rather than treating Relics as a universal drop from ordinary encounters elsewhere.
- Open treasure chests and defeat dangerous enemies. The reported sources identify both chests and dangerous foes as Relic sources.
- Use Freki when you need help searching. Freki, a Norgandian direwolf, can assist with finding Relics in exchange for meat and pets. Freki is an additional search aid, not the only way to obtain them.
- Return to Norgandian Settlement. Bring the Relic to Jiera, the settlement’s appraiser.
- Appraise the Relic. Jiera converts it into a weapon or armor result. The game’s displayed result is the authority for the item’s final statistics and abilities.
- Compare before replacing anything. Check the new item against the currently equipped weapon or armor, the intended wearer’s role, and the party’s weight limit before selling, discarding or enhancing older gear.
The available descriptions do not establish a guaranteed drop table, a complete appraisal recipe, exact bonus odds or a fixed sequence of materials. Save those assumptions out of your build planning: the reliable strategy is to collect several candidates, appraise them, and evaluate the actual results.
Where to find Relics in Norgan
Treasure chests
Chests are one of the reported sources. Explore side paths and difficult areas instead of rushing only through the main route. The evidence identifies chests as a source, but it does not provide a complete chest-by-chest map or a published respawn schedule. Do not infer a fixed Relic percentage from an individual chest opening.
Dangerous enemies
Relics can also be recovered from dangerous enemies. This makes combat difficulty part of the acquisition loop: an area that is risky for your current party may still be worth revisiting once your equipment, vocation roles or Pawn composition improve. No verified enemy-specific drop rates are established, so target encounters for their challenge and other rewards rather than farming on the promise of a particular probability.

Freki’s search assistance
Freki is a Norgandian direwolf who can help locate Relics. The reported exchange involves meat and pets. The sources do not specify a universal meat quantity, a cooldown, a guaranteed discovery radius or a particular item tier. Use Freki as a way to improve your search routine, not as proof that every visit will produce a chosen Relic.
How to appraise a Relic with Jiera
Reach the correct settlement
Jiera performs the appraisal in Norgandian Settlement. If you are carrying a Relic but cannot find the relevant service, confirm that you are in the Norgandian Settlement associated with the Norgan loop; the ordinary smiths and merchants elsewhere are not a substitute for the named appraiser.
Use the appraisal service
Speak with Jiera and select the appraisal interaction presented by your current game version. The resulting item is a weapon or armor piece, not merely an upgraded crafting ingredient. Read the complete result screen before confirming any inventory cleanup, because the value lies in the generated equipment and its parameters.

Record the result before making another decision
Note the item’s attack or magick contribution, armor or resistance benefits, weight and any ability text. The available source material does not establish whether every appraised item can use every base-game enhancement style, so do not assume that appraisal automatically unlocks all smithing options. Check the live item menu in your edition before spending rare materials.

What Relic appraisal can give you

There is no verified complete bonus list, best-in-slot ranking or appraisal odds table to apply to every player. A result that is excellent for a high-damage build may be less useful to a defensive wearer, a support-focused Pawn or a heavily encumbered party.
How to get the most from an appraised bonus
Start with the wearer’s job
For a physical-damage build, prioritize the item’s attack contribution and any ability that directly improves the way that character deals damage. For a magick-oriented build, inspect the magick contribution and effects that support spell use. A mixed build should compare both values rather than automatically choosing the larger number on one side.
Check the defensive trade-off
Armor is not judged only by its headline defense. Resistance-related benefits can matter more than a small raw-stat increase when the wearer is repeatedly exposed to a particular threat. If the appraisal grants an ability rather than a simple numerical boost, read whether it changes survivability, control or utility before deciding that a lower attack value is a downgrade.

A powerful result can still be a poor practical upgrade if it pushes the Arisen or a Pawn into a worse encumbrance state. Compare the item’s weight with the rest of the loadout, not in isolation. A lighter result can preserve carrying capacity for exploration, while a heavier result may be justified when its offensive, resistance or knockdown benefit solves a specific combat problem.

Evaluate Pawns as part of the party
An appraised item for a Pawn should be judged by the whole group. A modest personal-stat gain may be valuable if the item supplies a missing defensive or utility effect, while duplicating an ability already covered elsewhere may have little practical benefit. Assign the item to the character whose role makes the ability useful rather than automatically keeping every high-stat roll for the Arisen.
Keep alternatives when parameters differ
Because parameters are reported as random, do not discard every result that loses on one statistic. Keep candidates with different strengths until you know which role needs the item. One roll may be the better combat choice; another may be the better exploration choice because of weight or resistance.
Relic appraisal versus ordinary equipment enhancement
The base game has a separate enhancement system that applies regional smithing styles to equipment. Relic appraisal creates or reveals the Relic gear; ordinary enhancement modifies eligible equipment through a smithing style. The available descriptions do not confirm that every appraised Relic can accept every style, so treat compatibility as an item-by-item question in the current game.

These style descriptions come from a secondary guide updated March 31, 2024. They are useful orientation, not proof of exact current values, universal compatibility or a single best path after the Dark Arisen expansion. Patches can alter costs, eligibility or displayed gains.

Choosing a smithing style after appraisal
Choose by offensive stat
If the appraised item’s role is straightforward physical damage, Battahli’s strength and physical-attack emphasis is the relevant trade-off. If the role is magick damage or spell support, Elven’s magick emphasis is the natural comparison. Vermundian is the safer middle ground when both strength and magick matter.
Choose by control or resistance
Dwarven is the style to examine when the value of a weapon’s knockdown power or an armor piece’s resistance outweighs a lighter load. Those benefits are situational: they should answer a known combat need rather than being selected automatically because the style sounds more advanced.
Choose by encumbrance
Elven and Vermundian reduce weight in the reported descriptions, while Battahli and Dwarven increase it. Wyrmfire is described as halving weight after the equipment is fully enhanced, but it also requires special monster materials. Make the weight decision alongside your attack and defense priorities, not after them.

Before spending materials, check which styles the item actually offers, whether it is considered fully enhanced, and whether the required materials are available in your current version. The cited material does not establish a universal rule that all appraised Relics accept all five styles.
A practical decision workflow
- Finish appraisal first. Do not plan a smithing path from the Relic’s name alone; wait for the generated weapon or armor statistics and ability text.
- Assign a role. Decide whether the item is intended for physical damage, magick, defense, knockdown, resistance, exploration or a Pawn utility role.
- Compare the current item. Look at the complete loadout, including weight and any ability already supplied by another piece.
- Sort the result. Keep the item if it improves the role, keep it as an alternative if it solves a different role, or sell/discard it only after checking that no other party member benefits from it.
- Check enhancement eligibility. Open the item’s enhancement options in the live game and verify the available style and material requirements.
- Spend materials in priority order. Enhance the item that fixes your largest current weakness rather than applying a style simply because it is available.
- Recheck encumbrance and party coverage. After enhancement, reassess the wearer’s weight and whether the new ability duplicates or complements another party member’s effect.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing Relics with crafting materials: Relics belong to the Dark Arisen Norgan loop and are appraised into equipment. They are not interchangeable with every ordinary upgrade item.
- Expecting a guaranteed bonus: Random parameters mean that appraisal does not promise a specific statistic or ability. Collect and compare results instead of planning around an unverified roll.
- Using Freki as the only source: Freki assists with searching, while chests and dangerous enemies are also reported sources.
- Assuming a universal best style: The smithing choice changes with vocation role, desired offense, defensive needs, knockdown, resistance and weight.
- Ignoring a good ability because of one lower number: A refined or new ability can change an item’s value even when one headline statistic is not the highest available.
- Spending rare materials before checking compatibility: The evidence does not establish that every appraised Relic accepts every base-game enhancement method. Verify the item’s own menu first.
- Treating old guide values as permanent: The five-style guide was updated March 31, 2024, while the expansion reporting is dated September 2, 2026. Current patches may change costs, values or behavior.
What is still unknown about Relic bonuses
The published material supports the core loop and broad results, but it does not establish a full, guaranteed bonus table. Specifically, it does not provide verified Relic drop percentages, a complete list of possible abilities, exact appraisal odds, a method for targeting one parameter, a universal best-in-slot ranking or a confirmed compatibility chart for every smithing style and every appraised item.
That limitation affects how you should plan. Use the in-game result screen to make the final decision, and treat precise numbers, material costs and compatibility claims from older guides as version-sensitive until confirmed in your current build.
Bottom line for upgrading Relics
Explore Norgan, search chests and dangerous encounters, use Freki when helpful, and take the finds to Jiera in Norgandian Settlement. Appraisal is the Relic upgrade step and can produce stronger weapons or armor with new or refined abilities, but random parameters make comparison essential. Once you have a result worth keeping, evaluate ordinary smithing separately: choose Vermundian, Battahli, Elven, Dwarven or Wyrmfire according to the wearer’s offense, defense, knockdown or resistance needs and available weight, then confirm that the current item actually supports the intended enhancement.
