In Path of Exile 2, “upgrading” a skill gem can mean raising its level, improving its quality, or adding support sockets. Each uses a different item: an Uncut Skill Gem for level, a Gemcutter’s Prism for quality, and a tiered Jeweller’s Orb for support capacity. Choose the property you want to change before using currency.
Choose the upgrade you want
| Goal | Item | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Raise an active skill’s level | Uncut Skill Gem | The skill gem’s level. PoE2 Tools reports that an Uncut Skill Gem can upgrade an existing skill. |
| Improve quality | Gemcutter’s Prism | The gem’s quality and its skill-specific effect. The PoE Wiki’s Gemcutter’s Prism reference identifies it as the quality currency. |
| Add support capacity | Lesser, regular, or Greater Jeweller’s Orb | Support socket count, reported as three, four, or five respectively, from a starting count of two. PoE2DB’s Jeweller’s Orb reference lists the tiers. |
Raise a skill gem’s level
Use an Uncut Skill Gem when you want a higher-level version of an existing active skill. The precise eligibility rules and interface prompts can depend on the current game version; check the client’s prompt before confirming. Do not assume that any Uncut Skill Gem can upgrade any skill, or that it will work regardless of level or gem type.

Improve gem quality
Use a Gemcutter’s Prism to change a gem’s quality. Quality effects vary by skill, so inspect the specific gem in your current client to see what its quality does. A Prism is not the item for adding support sockets, and the available references do not establish a universal damage increase or a quality cap that applies to every skill.
Add support sockets
Jeweller’s Orb tiers are used to increase a skill’s support socket capacity. The current secondary references report this progression:

| Three | Lesser Jeweller’s Orb |
| Four | Jeweller’s Orb |
| Five | Greater Jeweller’s Orb |
This changes how many support gems can be attached to the skill; it does not raise the skill’s level. Confirm the item name and prompt in the live client, since third-party references can lag behind patches.
Keep Path of Exile 1 instructions separate
Path of Exile 2 uses the support socket model described above and separate support gems. Do not apply Path of Exile 1 recipes or its older links terminology to PoE 2. If an older guide’s steps do not match the current item names or prompts in your client, rely on the live game interface rather than assuming the systems are interchangeable.

What to check before spending currency
- Identify whether you want a higher level, better quality, or more support capacity; these are different properties.
- Read the target gem’s current in-game description, especially for quality effects and any level-up eligibility prompt.
- For support capacity, use the orb tier matching the desired count and confirm its effect in the client.
- Do not base a decision on an assumed market price or cost-effectiveness: current currency prices and the value of a particular support combination depend on the game economy and build.
The item functions and socket progression above come from secondary references, not official Grinding Gear Games documentation. The references carry version signals that do not align perfectly, so verify version-sensitive details in the game after patches.
